If it doesn't work when you use the cage, it is because the bird is a male. Kill it and try again until you get a female.

This is being a pain for me. I've opened 18 nests now, and gotten all males. I'm going a little crazy.

Think i got lucky the 2nd net i opened was a female, I am lvl 65 so i rode to the back and killed 2 mobs and had my female, easy quest for me.

Cords are correct though,

It appears they actually spawn randomly throughout the area. The cords are unnecessary, simply wander around killing Haal'eshi until you find birds/nests to open. I got it on my first one, but I saw at least 2 other nests from where mine was.

The respawn rate for a given nest appears to be between 6 and 7 minutes. I camped one with buffs on and that's about how much time ticked away.

One of the things I had a problem with on this quest in the beginning is that the nests -aren't- the actual nests you find within the Den. Ignore those and look for tiny little campfire-like objects that are clickable. They have a tiny red glow in the center. Those are the nests you need for the quest.

As you stand around 26,62, in front of the Den of Haal'esh, looking south at four Haal'eshi Talonguards patrolling the entrance, you are probably wondering whether you have to fight through the bird-creatures, all the way down into their chasm and then all the way back up to get to the nests at the end around 28,79 (or so).

You don't. That's the sucker's way!

First of all, check around the entrance for small nests. I found one guarded only by two owls (actual birds, not humanoids), at 25,71, just to the west and above the entrance. It only had a male bird so it didn't complete my quest but you might get luckier. It was also gone 20 minutes later when I checked but it might be there for you, give it a look. And keep your eyes open as you go, for the small nests with the tiny red glow at the center.

The fast way to get to the final hut at 28,79 is to go around the chasm. Look to the east of those four Haal'eshi Talonguards patrolling the entrance. Up on the rocks there's another Talonguard. At level 60 I was easily able to walk past the four ground-level guards and kill the guy on the rocks. By then riding on the rocks, to the east of the chasm, I made it all the way to around 30,78 without aggroing another mob.

From there I just had to kill about 4 casters to get to the little hut with the two nests, one of which had my female.

This quest goes well with Magic of the Arakkoa (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=9396) and, since you're going east around the birdmen anyway, The Great Fissure (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=9340).

Got mine at 65.6, 67.1 on my first go. There was only a Kaliri Swooper lvl 60 and a Kaliri Matriach lvl 63 guarding the nest.

He drops a quest item. Might as well do this while you're here too.

He has a very quick respawn time so you can't miss him.

Guess I am unlucky too. I have now opened 10 nests (2 being just outside the little hut at the end of the run) and they have all been males. Long quest!

Also, the birds respawn quite quickly, but the nests take a long time to respawn.

There is yet another quest in this Den of Birdmen, a rescue mission (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=9375) in which you have to escort a Wounded Blood Elf Pilgrim around 24, 76 (inside the shimmering blue cave, to enter from the southmost entrance is cleverest) to Falcon Watch.

It is quite a bitch, not only do you have to fend off the usual spawning scoundrels ("You won't stop me from reaching Falcon Watch!") you also have to kill the @#$%-load of peeps you run into on the way out of the den.

Once/If you reach Falcon Watch she will collapse before Taleris Dawngazer, last words being "Falcon Watch, at last! Now, where's my... Oh no! My pack, it's missing! Where has -".

Once these words are uttered you can complete the quest at Taleris, and recieving a followup quest called A Pilgrim's Plight (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=9376).

Also have many nests near blood elf cage.

I got it on my first try. It's a great quest to do with Magic of the Arakkoa. All you have to do clear mobs all the way to a small nest, and then right click it. DO NOT KILL THE BIRD IF IT'S A FEMALE HATCHLING! In order to complete the quest objective, you must right click the cage in your inventory. Then you should have the quest objective complete, and an occupied bird cage! If you don't get a female kaliri hatchling on the first try, just keep trying! You can do it! Just remember to do what I said! Also, please remember that there are two more quests to obtain here. There is a wounded blood elf pilgrim lying down that starts an escort quest. There is a mob named Avruu that drops a quest starting item. Thanks!

I gave up after getting 24 males... and the worst thing was that when I was fighting some birds, a draenei shaman came to the nest i was going to open next, female hatchling popped and the shaman killed it! :S

I opened approximately eighty, yes, eighty of these nests. I spent about 2 1/2 hours opening nests, and got over 100k exp from just killing the birds and other monsters around the area. This is officially the stupidest, most frustrating quest I have ever done. I never did get the female hatchling...

This took quite a while on my hunter.

A tip for fellow hunters, drop a freezing trap right on top of the nest as you open it. That way, when the bird spawns it's frozen and you can check male or female before you attack it or capture it.
Also, it won't be hitting you while you're trying to capture it. :) Good luck!

yeah this is one of the most annoying quests i've ever done. Partly my own fault though.. I soloed it on a 60 mage.. and to be fair it is rated as a level 62 quest. First of all, i got 8 male hatchlings in a row.. 8. omg.. come on Blizz! the aggro was ridiculous.. birds were attacking me from, like, nowhere. I would definitely recommend doing this quest on a toon that can easily (*easily*) handle mobs that are 62-63 and with frequent adds. Oherwise you will suffer about an hour and a half of aggravation, like I did. What made it so aggravating was so many male hatchlings.. I have done this quest once before, on a 62 shaman and i was lucky, got a female on the second or third try. Didn't realize at the time how lucky that was.

I guess I did it the hard way (or as a previous poster said, the "sucker" way)... went down the ramp at the entrance to Haalesh, killed all the birdmen that were in my way, and ducked into a little side terrace where i could see a couple of nests. That's where i got all the silly aggro.. it's pretty tight quarters in there and i guess it's asking for trouble to be lower level than all the mobs, cuz of aggro range. And for a cloth wearer, the adds are not good news.

Anywho, the quest rewards aren't too bad once you finally cage a female hatchling.. 10050 exp, 2g 70s and 250 rep with Silvermoon. Plus, in my case, the satisfaction of being done with the Haaleshi. For now, anyway :)

Was unable to do this quest yesterday, ticketed a GM today about this quest and also Testing the Antidote which has the same problem. GM ported me to the quest area and sure enough, the quest worked. However, Testing the Antidote is still bugged.

Look for mini nests that you can right click. Clicking on them will cause either a male or female hatchling to appear, but mostly males. :/

Quest can still bug as of 4.2.2 - sometimes, using the cage is like the goggles, i.e. it does nothing. You have to drop, pick up again, and hope the RNG loves you.

The hatchlings despawn after exactly 2 minutes, so if you're a rogue trying to do this without any killing, you will not be able to open, vanish, catch, and vanish.

Nests also take a very long time to respawn, and the nests spawn a weighted random gender - males are more likely than females.

Travel to the Den of Haal'esh in Hellfire Peninsula and search the Kaliri Nests for a Female Kaliri Hatchling. Use the Empty Birdcage to capture it and bring it to Falconer Drenna Riverwind at Falcon Watch.

Description

The Haal'eshi arakkoa have domesticated a beautiful bird species called the kaliri.

I've managed to capture a young male and they appear to be trainable. The females are much rarer, but if I had one I could attempt to breed them. She has to be young, though... a hatchling. An older wild bird wouldn't survive in captivity.

Take this cage and travel south, to the Den of Haal'esh. Search the nests for eggs that are ready to hatch. If you bring me back a female hatchling, I'll reward you handsomely.
