Avoid the Bloated Sky Rays, the neutral ones. They're tougher than the hostile ones, and don't seem to drop what you need.

Crummy drop rate overall. If you happen to be near the Unshackled Protector, it will help you kill the big ones.
Killing a Fathom Ray Broodkeeper will draw a bunch of skate and they don't drop much at all.

You can use the provided Fathom Hook to keep doing bleed damage to the fathom rays even after you've pulled them to the ground. It makes taking out the larger ones much easier.

Fastest way to do this is to find one of the patrolling friendly giants and pull mobs just ahead of him. He'll jump into the fight and DPS for you.

Also, you can use the hook every 5 seconds, even on grounded rays, for a DPS boost. Speeds things up a lot.

I created a macro to ease the pain in doing this. It simply targets a Coral Skate and use the hook. It tries the best to avoid dead mobs but sometimes it sticks to a dead body. When that happens just walk a bit from the body and spam the macro again.

Just create a macro containing this code, assign to a keybind, walk and spam the button. No more looking to the sky trying to guess where are these guys.

I don't care enough about any reward to do this quest unless they fix the lamentable drop rate.

FYI - you can get the quest items from ANY fathom ray in the entire zone. You are only limited to using the fathom hook in the immediate area of the quest giver. Don't waste your time staying there - just go off and do other quests while killing sky rays.

Yes, another painful Hunter Arcana quest, only way to do this is to pull heaps, 6-8 at a time and you'll get 2-3 Fathom Flesh each time, makes it heaps quicker :) Stand around 58/52 and you'll get quite big groups close enough to drag them all down :)

Description

I am grateful for the help that your Alliance has given my people, but we are desperately short on food and supplies. If we do not gather enough supplies to take care of both the Alliance and my clan, we will run out of food within the week. Thankfully, there appears to be an abundance of fathom rays in the area, but I will need help hunting them in order to gather enough food for our camp. Take this fathom hook and use it to pull down the fathom rays from above.
