Don't get hit by his Whirlwind or you will die. I also assume his balls of death will kill you. I recommend tanking him in the bottom right corner of the room so that you can easily avoid the balls of death. You can also stun him during his whirlwind, but don't get too close.

Since it is impossible to repair in here, I also recommend you don't die.

So this was for me a very difficult one - as a Melee character anyway.

The way that I did it was to move him to bottom right corner and slowly kite him up the stairs - Once you got upstairs all you need to do is avoid or interrupt Whirlwind and keep him up there.

The Iron Stars don't damage you up there.

The cast of whirlwind can't be interrupted, and as a melee, I was unable to get close enough to see if the channel could be interrupted. Stunning the channel does work though. He does not recast it immediately as it is still on cooldown.

Melee go right. The left one has a delay, this means that if you try to fight him on that side, the left side of the room will have maybe a half second window where you don't get balled. It is much easier on the other side.

Also if you go to the left side he resets, but the right side you can go up the hall.

Sorry but none of the comments actually worked for me at all.

Going right or left made the Iron Star pull me back into the room and kill me, going too far up the ramp made him reset.

The only thing that worked was to pull him to the right and just move out of the way of the Iron Stars and stun or cc the Whirlwind cast.

Be mindful that if you kill him while he's casting War Machines to summon the Iron Stars they will still come out and kill you, which is what almost happpend to me.

This is a Medium to fairly Difficult fight for Havoc Demon Hunters if you make proper use of Imprison, Chaos Nova and Eye Beam. You can switch to Tank spec but it will take four times longer and increases the chance of screwing up with the Iron Stars. So for Havoc Spec make sure you take Unleashed Power and Demonic.

1. Pull him close to the right of the room and fight him there (don't take him up the ramp or to the walls of the room or it will reset.)

2. Build up enough fury to Eye Beam, he will then start casting Whirlwind, Chaos Nova him before he can finish casting and burst as much as you could in your brief window of Meta.

3. Once he Whirlwinds run closer to the right of the room to avoid the duration of Whirlwind. When he finishes casting Whirlwind attack him while he casts Machines of War (If you are to the right of the room you can time the Iron Stars and avoid them easily.)

4. Once you have safely avoided Iron Stars pop Metamorphosis and burst as much as you can, Chaos Nova the Whirlwind cast (not the actual Whirlwind) and keep bursting.

5. Repeat the Machines of War process of avoiding Iron Stars, now you will need to start using Imprison on him when he is chasing you with Whirlwind. That way the Whirlwind has already been cast so he won't repeat it, the major reason to imprison him as well is so you can CC him to get Eye Beam off cool-down. Once you do this and have Eye Beam you are able to go into Meta via Eye Beam to life-steal enough health to stay in the fight and burst him down to 1% health.

I did this as fury warrior today. kiting up the stairs doesn´t seem to work anymore, at least I couldn´t prevent it no matter what I tried.

what actually worked for me (and probably will for any melee):

-on first whirlwind, immediately start running to either side of the room. no matter where you go, aim slightly to the right so garrosh follows you there. he won´t catch you so if you start angling yourself to the right too late, he´ll end up in the middle of the path.

-reengage/charge back in and dps him for a few seconds while he casts machines of war.

-he will follow up with whirlwind almost immediately. if you got the positioning right, you can run towards the left corner of your end of the room (where the deathball will spawn) for a bit without getting too close to it while still gaining ground on garrosh. once there is some open space behind it, run/jump there and then kite the whirlwinding garrosh back towards the middle.

-rinse/repeat actually. I ended up circling around one side of the room about 3 times before he died.

general tips, things to consider:
-whirlwind can be stopped during cast and during channel (the latter just has a verry short time window before you die if you´re too close). intimidating shout worked for me. he will recast it right away tho but it can be good to gain a few dps seconds. machines of war can be delayed likewise.
- the aoe of the iron stars is overlapping, so sticking to the middle and quickly step a bit to the left or right won´t work. don´t underestimate the distances.
-if you´re unsure about if you can get to an advantageous position before next machine, rather run than dps.

it´s actually not too hard if you get the hang of it, the biggest issue is the short time you can actually do damage to him.

As a tank I kited him up and down the ramps on either side, not the stairs ahead. Took a couple of minutes but didn't take any damage to either whirlwind or machines. You can drag him quite far up the ramps, enough to completely avoid the whirlwind for the whole channeling duration. Good luck!

As a ret paladin, use hand of hinderance to slow him while he's whirlwinding then kite him in a circle. Can use hammer of justice to stun him in whirlwind too. Pop avenging wrath at start of encounter and if you wanna make it faster, pop a drums of maelstrom too. Use divine steed talent to avoid war machines. Easy fight, you might die 2 or 3 times to get a feel for it.

boomkin 340 tips - Whirlwind and Iron Star one shots. Roots = win here.

Stay around the front (front being the throne) left corner when the Iron Star is coming. The Iron Star at the 'front' comes right to left and 'back' it goes left to right - so it gives you more time to move behind the 'back' one once it moves.

Root him for the whirlwind and when re-positioning. I found Typhoon useful for interrupting the whirlwind cast and giving me time to root before he cast it again. This allows you to tank him and nuke for longer.

took 3 attempts - 1 to learn whirlwind, 2 to learn Iron Star and 3 to sort positioning!

Rez timer, can't repair, insta death from two abilities. Bring a jeeves and some food. Come prepared.

My advice as a melee character is to kite him in a triangle. Pull in the center, stun first whirlwind, back into the bottom right corner, fight him there until he machines of war, then move to the top right after the first machine goes by. Avoid second machine by taking him back to middle. Rinse and repeat. Depends on your amount of stuns.

Although I know how to do this by keeping him up the top of the ramp section, what keeps getting me is either the lag not procing my dash to get out of the reach of whirlwind or him just saying "weak" and resetting. He's been a quarter health and just wont go down.

Just finished this in my 335 ilvl Ret Pally. Garrosh can still be kited up the ramp. Get at max range for one of your skills toward the ramp on your right from where you jump down. You need to make sure he isn't too far away when you start moving up the ramp or he will reset. This makes it easy peasy. Just have to watch out for his whirlwind.

Tips for Warlocks:

1. Plant a Demonic Circle in the Southwest/lower left quadrant of the map, near the wall but not at the wall. Somewhere comfortable for you to reach.

IMPORTANT: Demonic Gateway's 90s cooldown on use is too long and can only be used once every other Machines of War (see below), and Burning Rush is actually way too slow.

2. Summon Voidwalker. Doesn't matter what your survivability is, Whirlwind will probably kill you, but won't do nearly as much damage to a Voidwalker.
3. Stay in the northwestern quadrant, but be as close to your Demonic Circle without crossing the center line as possible.
4. When you see Garrosh cast Machines of War, watch for the Iron Star to appear in the Southwest/Lower Left quadrant on top of your Circle. The INSTANT the star is clear of the circle, use Demonic Circle: Teleport to avoid the northern Iron Star.
5. Rinse and Repeat. Demonic Circle: Teleport only has a 30 second cooldown, so it should always be up reliably during Machines of War.

For boomkin/resto, dump damage into him while pulling him up the ramp just to be out of range of the stars. Don't refresh dots.
Once he starts whirlwinding, keep at a 20-30y distance and do a rotation of 3x Solar Wrath, 1x Entangling Roots (mileage may vary dep on gear). By the time the 3rd wrath hits and breaks the roots, your new roots should land.
It takes a bit longer, but is very safe.

Use typhoon or mass entanglement if you happen to have funky crits and break the roots early.

I was able to do it as a Havoc DH taking Fel Eruption and Demonic. Stand in the bottom right corner of the room, move away as soon as he starts casting Whirwind and interrupt the channel, not the cast with Fel Eruption. Then when Machines of War happens, stay well away from the iron star that moves along the top of the room, then run behind it to avoid the one that moves along the bottom.

For the second Whirlwind, Vengeful Retreat away as soon as the cast happens, he can be slowed and kited and move back into position to avoid Machines of War. Then you can stun the next Whirlwind and just burst as much as you can when neither mechanic is happening. You can probably just kite them all with the Master of the Glaive talent and Throw Glaive if you don't want to stun with Fel Eruption.

Rinse and repeat. It took me a few tries to learn the rotation and when to do what.

The way to do this scenario, for any class, is to generally hang out in the bottom-right of the room. The reason is that when he summons the Iron Star echoes the top one launches first so you want to be in a position to move to the top half of the room after it goes by. If you try to fight him on the left half of the room you won't have enough time to dodge the Iron Stars as the top one will arrive right around when the bottom one is launching. His sequence seems to be:

Whirlwind
Machines of War (aka Iron Stars)
Whirlwind

This sequence means he will cast two Whirlwinds between summon the Iron Stars. If you are melee once he starts casts Whirlwind you will want to use a speed buff of some kind and run away from him until the cast finishes. Then dodge the Iron Stars. Repeat the sequence until he dies. If you have a stun or CC use them to give yourself an opportunity to heal or to give yourself a break from dodging his abilities.

Based on the mixed reports about the stairs, I did more research. The times I tried to take him to the stairs but failed, I ran as soon as he started casting whirldwind and he would coincidentally reset as I got to the stairs. After thinking that that method was patched, I tried sticking to the far side of the room and immediately dodging the Iron Star but he would still reset.

As of today, the stairs method still works BUT you can't be too far ahead of him or he WILL reset. I lured him there twice (first time died due to underestimating the range of the Iron Star) so I can confirm that it works, you just have to lead him by a short leash and you can get him there. So after beating on him for a while (Assassination Rogue) he cast Whirlwind and I just moved beyond his reach and let him follow me from a safe distance (about the space of 5 characters) and when his cast finished and he started whirling towards me, only THEN did I start moving towards the stairs. As he gets near the stairs he'll start Machines of War. Don't go too far past the "gate" of the stairs, but be wary that the Iron Stars can reach a little bit past the gate and WILL juggle kill you if you get caught in the blast. By the time he starts chasing you with the second whirlwind though, he should already be at the stairs. From there the fight should be fairly trivial.

Just keep him close to the bottom right but not all the way in the corner. Aim to finish his WW around there so you can run from there past the top Iron Star in order to avoid the bottom. Rinse and repeat. GW makes this alot easier.

He is susceptible to all forms of relevant CC I believe, so use that to your advantage here to interrupt whirlwind, kiting isn't the best option because it elongates the fight and makes it more likely you die.

As an Enhancement Shaman I used all CDs I had and bursted him to roughly 30% up til when he first used whirlwind. I used Sundering to interrupt it and he immediately summoned the war machines. You must be on the bottom right side of the arena, and then cross behind the Iron Star once it passes in front of you. The only other way if you were to try and sneak around the star on the left side would probably be a Mage's double blink but even that would require some tight timing and you may not make it anyway. I finished him off quickly after that so I don't know how frequently he uses Whirlwind but I would imagine Hex works as well to interrupt it, just have to get out of range (probably need to drop Earthbind) and begin casting with enough space so he doesn't one shot you.

Don't make the same mistake I did - "bottom right of the room" mentioned by both Sammyknight and Sortul is the northwest corner, not the southeast. This means the "top" Iron Star spawning first is the one on the throne side (from the southwest corner heading east) and the "bottom" Iron Star spawning second is the entrance side (from the northeast corner heading west).

And as Sortul mentioned, Garrosh's rotation is WW1-Iron Star-WW2.
What I ended up doing (as I didn't want to do further research into the staircase "lolwhatstar" method) was drawing triangles over and over: kite WW1 to northwest corner (but not all the way to the grates), duck behind the throne side Iron Star after it passes, kite WW2 back towards center of room... rinse repeat.

p.s. Food for thought to priests that are having a rough time: though you can't Barrier/PS through either of the mechanics (believe me, I tried), going discipline for a mobile Penance to dps while kiting the WWs on top of the instant-casts (PWS and Solace/DS if you talented into them) and a bubble basically available every GCD did fare me better than trying it in shadow. As I was liberally using bubbles defensively, I also chose Feathers instead of B&S so I can control when I want that movement speed burst to kite the WWs.

Killed him as 340 boomkin.

1 - keep him rooted with entangling roots
2 - still can be totally kited up the stairs to avoid iron stars (as of September 9, 2018). I believe the trick here is some kind of dots. If you take too much time between attacks he may reset.

I tried the right corner strategy as suggested here but he kept resetting on 50%, dunno why. Then I pulled him up the ramps on the platform above and just kept him dotted with sunfire/moonfire, kept rooting him and just nuked him.

A side note - I am very disappointed with this recruitment chain quest. Blizz could (and should) have done better.

I pulled him part way onto the ramp/stairs so I didn't have to deal with the machines of war. Got him below 10%.

He cast whirlwind and I was 35 yards away. It teleported me into him to kill me. Whoever designed this should be fired.

Incredibly frustrating!

Even when you've mastered a winning strategy, he can still reset apparently randomly.

I was kiting him around the room, and got him to less than 20% when he yelled "Weak!" and ran back to the middle of the room..

I wasn't anywhere near the stairs.

I finished it immediately after this post. On a Havoc DH, as mobility seems to be key here. I used a modified version of the "square" path as suggested elsewhere.

My preferred path is counterclockwise triangle with center of room at apex.

So, run to bottom left whilst using whatever means you have to stay out of melee range whilst Garrosh is using Whirlwind. Timed correctly you can melee him until he uses his Deathballz. Run to the east avoiding the second ball and into the space behind it. Garrosh should be Whirlwinding toward you. Melee him before heading towards the centre of the room just before he Whirlwinds again, a quick melee again before avoiding Whirlwind whilst heading back the the bottom of the room, just in time to avoid his stinking Deathballz. Rinse/Repeat.

Once you've started this questline on a toon is there any way to work it on another character? I'm a casual player and my main is a priest, was able to tackle the first two but I believe this one is impossible for that character.

Made an account just to give advice on this fight. 336 Arms Warrior, switched to Fury for the increased heals.

1. Move him to the bottom of the room.
2. Once he starts casting WW move to the bottom right of the room and wait for his WW to end.
3. He casts warmachine, wait for the iron star above you to pass then move up to that corner.
4. He will cast WW, move back to the middle of the room. By this time the other iron star would have passed.
5. Repeat steps 1-4 until dead

As a 343 MISTWEAVER* Monk, the solution to him resetting was constant damage with as little downtime as possible. I kept him up on the top back corridor and kited him all the way up and down from left to right behind the dragon without ever turning toward the main room. When he'd cast Whirlwind, I'd Chi Torpedo away and hit him with Chi Wave and Jade Lightning to keep damage on him, and ONLY would stun him using Paralyze if I couldn't escape once he'd already begun casting Whirlwind. The key seems to really be keeping consistent damage on him and not getting TOO far from him, and that should avoid the resetting. Hope you can get it done! This was TERRIBLE, and AWFUL end to grueling weeks of grinding. Seriously bad way to close out what could've been an amazing experience.

The fight can be done normally just by kiting and avoiding the iron stars. The annoying thing here is that the boss can randomly reset even when he is nowhere near the stairs. Quite disappointing.

You cannot do this on the left side of the room. Do it on the right. Kite him around there, when he uses War Machine ability, stay on bottom right till machine goes past then move over. Use stuns, slows, roots to stop him getting to you when you have to move for the machines. Don't try and get near him when he's already spinning. Goodluck. Took like 7 attempts (6 of those on the left side of the room).

as an assassination rogue this was fairly easy.
crippling poison affects his whirlwind speed.keep it applied and you will never be in any danger.
while you keep a safe distance i suggest using poisoned knife on him.
this will keep your poisons applied and build up combopoints.
as soon as he comes out of whirlwind,reapply garrote & rupture.

when he casts warmachine move to the bottom right of the room using sprint,wait for the iron star to pass you by and go up.
with crippling poison up you should have no fear of garrosh catching up on you.

As a frost DK, I dragged him to the bottom left with howling blast then moved up.

When he started to cast whirlwind I ran and kept throwing howling blast at him. Mind freeze does not work and if you death grip him or asphyxiate he will start casting again. You can asphyxiate after he stars to spin.

I kept the battle up making sure that he always has frost disease on him. Dps a little, run if he starts to spin. I believe that frost fever also slows him down. Went down easy.... after I died like 4 times....

Unexpectedley, I managed to do it easily as a DK:
- choose unholy spe, all pet talents (skeleton and bat) plus spectral march (though I did not need it)
- kite grommash spamming slow and pets (bat, summon, monstruosity, army of dead and bat) and avoiding stars.

341 Fury warrior. Pretty easy, just outrun the WhirlWind and then charge back in when its over. I would talent Fresh Meat, Impending Victory, and Furious Charge to help keep your health up. The other difficult part is the War Machine which is two large iron stars each taking up half the room and going in opposite directions. You will have to dodge 1 then immediately move over to the side it was on to dodge the other. Outside of that its a matter of hitting Garrosh as hard as you can with everything else. (Heroic Leap can be helpful to dodge if you get in a tight spot, but don't count on it to be off CD before the next WM)

I have been trying to complete this quest on my disc priest for a couple weeks now. Needless to say impossible! until today. Today was going to be my last attempt. Glad I tried it one last time.

Blizzard reduced the damage of this fight to make it possible for the softer, lower DPS classes to complete. Whirlwind did about 4-5k per hit, Mortal strike was 6-7k. I was able to damage well enough that the kill was about as difficult as the harder non-group elites in Zandalar, Kul Tiras. I continued, however, to have issues with the fight restarting when I go into the corners of the room. I stayed more or less in the middle chain casting shadow mend when I was 50% health.

09/18/18 352 havoc dh. what i did was dps him till first whirlwind, then run to one of the stairs. after first whirlwind, continue dps. when he casts war machines, run up the stairs and u can completely avoid the machines. after that dps him, then kite him upstairs for whirlwind. once ur up the stairs it turns into a kite fight. ezpz

Was this quest nerfed recently?
I did it as a 355 Guardian Druid, and he could barely hurt me at all (even when both the whirlwind and the iron star hit me at the same time). A shadow priest from my guild did the quest just before me, and he also said that he had no problem with it.
All in all, neither of us felt that it was even close to what others said about it.

ed.: didn't check the 9 days old comments, since wowhead says that they were on 7.3.5 (yes, I know that's not accurate), and I thought they were before the nerf. Seems like they agree with me that it was nerfed.
So, good news people! The quest is easy now.

There's a good video on this one about using a rectangle as a path and I highly recommend watching it. I had difficulty with this fight
on my warrior until i watched that. Basically stand facing him, go in and hit him. when he starts his whirlwind, run to the right (east) almost all the way to the side of the room and stand slightly south of the center line.

He will whirlwind towards you. when it stops he will summon the iron star which will be north of you, across the center line. as soon as it passes run to that side and make a pathway back to the center. the other iron star will pass on the other side and Garrosh will then whiirlwind towards you again, now you should be in the center of the room again. Hit him and dps him, when he whirlwinds again, repeat, move to the far right side of the room just south of center and repeat the rectangle.

As melee you really have to kite him a bit and take your time. it will take 3 or 4 passses around to get it done but you should not even lose much if any health especially if you have pots etc. The bottom line is make a rectangle going to the right, then circle back to the center going counterclockwise. The only time you can really stand and dps is when he's in the center and maybe one or two hits before he summons the iron star which is why it takes a bit longer as a melee class.

I did talent storm bolt for the fight. Although you can't interrupt whirlwind before he does it you can stun him with storm bolt and get a few extra hits in on him.

As I said there's a good video on it. Search it out on the tube and watch it. Makes total sense.

This must have been nerfed hard because I came here to read comments for tips and pointers before I tried to down the Echo of Garrosh and I was a bit startled by what I read.

I just did this with my ilvl 380 frost mage. I ensured he didn't get near me and there were only two whirlwinds and one set of War Machines to deal with in the time it took to get him down.

I started in the NW corner of the room, kept him slowed with Frostbolt and used Frost Nova once. I didn't bother with interrupts or any CC, dodged the first iron star, moved out of the way with the other, within seconds after that he was down.

after defeating garrosh, it doesn't tell where to go. so i opened my quest log and tells me to meet "cheif telemancer occuleth" in the great seal (portal place) in zuldazar. then the next quest is given via Eitrigg
i actually waited for the quest giver a {?} symbol to pop out.............

Very easy fight in 8.2.5.

I had difficulty progressing though, as two times in a row my kill did not register the next quest. Anachronos told me to go to oculeth but the quest did not change. In fact, it doesn't go past the step "meet anachronos outside orgrimmar". Anyone got any idea?

This quest appears to be bugged with the release of 8.2.5. All of my gear is scaling down to item level 10, and all of my trinkets/Azerite powers are disabled. I have submitted a bug report, but the quest does not seem to be doable at this time because of the massive amount of damage I take just from his autoattacks.

After defeating Garrosh, you can right click your unit frame and then click "Leave instance group" to return to Durotar. I was a little confused why I was left without an exit and my hearthstone was on cool down, until I remembered it was instanced.

As an Unholy DK, this encounter was pretty easy for me. I stayed towards the center of the room, and cast Undead Army right away, then Apocalypse after his first Iron Star. I ran from his Whirlwind and dodged his Iron Stars pretty easily because my minions pulled agro.

Make sure you save either your Hearthstone, Dalaran Hearthstone, Cloak of Coordination/Cloak of Coordination, or Baradin's Wardens Tabard for Echo of Garrosh Hellscream or you will be stuck there waiting for your hearthstones CD's for at least 5 minutes.

Well. I found this fight completely -impossible- as a rogue. Stand up close he whirlwinds or melee's you for far more than you can deal back. There is no dodging the iron stars, two appear one at each end of the room and each fill up one half. you will get run over and hit for insane damage by either one.

Not sure how this is possible, -at all-. I wish i was here with a healing class, but I dont have one on horde.

Typical bad design for post-crunch leveling.

I took this guy down by running from side to side to avoid the balls of death.It took some frustrating retries before i bested him as fury warrior, I had nothing to use as potions either, so it was a pretty difficult fight before i figured out the patterns.I did not know of the stairs thing after i took him, could have been useful, but i did it nonetheless.

Do note:

You can pick this quest line with any character of yours if you have done the pre-requirement quests, *but* you don't see Oculeth on the portal room with those who lack the background quests.

So do this questline on the same char who did the pre-requirements.

It took me quite some time to figure why I'm stuck...

I encountered another issue that returning players to Dragonflight will encounter if they have not attempted Battle for Azeroth.
Attempting to hand in the Echo of Garrosh Hellscream you will find that Chief Telemancer Oculeth is missing from the portal room.
If you cannot see Chief Telemancer Oculeth but see the '?' then you will need to complete the Battle for Azeroth intro quest chain with Princess Talanji.

Have not completed the Battle for Azeroth on any character before: You will need to complete the full quest chain. Herald quest chain.

If you have completed the introduction before use the following steps.
- You are in Zandalar seeing the complete quest but no npc.
- Head to the southern port and pick up the faction quest. For Horde, it is 'The Stormwind Extraction'.
- Hearth or use the Zandalar portal room to return to Orgrimmar for Horde. The Alliance should head to Stormwind
- Head to the inn located on the city map to talk to your factions turn-in.
- Upon completing that quest select the Npc again.
- Choose the option to skip the Extraction quest.
- You are ported Zandalar
- Speak to your Herald on the port
- Complete Princess Talanji quest chain up to the point that the portal room is introduced.
- Chief Telemancer Oculeth will appear a few moments after allowing you to hand in the quest and continue.

FOR HORDE:
After you complete the (Garrosh) fight, to leave you either: a) Right-click your avatar and choose, "Leave Instance", OR b) Hearth out

Next, you will need to return to the Great Seal in the city of Dazar'alor in Zuldazar, Zandalar where you will find Chief Telemancer Oculeth in the Portal Room for the turn-in.

At which point Eitrigg will appear offering you the next step in the quest chain, Restoring Old Bonds.

If he does not show up, then do the intro quest for Zuldazar and get the achievement "Welcome to Zandalar". Then the phase will sync and the NPC will be there.

So I have a problem with completing this sequence of quests: I've done everything up to handing this stage in, but the quest hand-in doesn't spawn. I made sure I completed the Nightborne unlock quest but having been advised to complete the BFA intro as well my level 62 mage can't access the BFA intro (I've gone to where Rastakhan is on his throne and the mini-map shows a quest available but there's no-one to click on) and thus I, as of now, are completely unable to complete this quest. A GM advised to send a bug report (I will if I can't find a last minute solution) and if I have to level a character to 40 and unlocking it via Chromie so be it, but I'm hoping there's something I'm missing/have done wrong.

8/14/2023 I just finished this quest and there was no way to turn it in. If you haven't played the Battle For Azeroth expansion you need to start that questline (it's not very long, you break into stockades) which will lead you to the Welcome to Zandalar quest (mentioned in a previous comment) which will reveal the Portal Mage needed to turn in the quest.
