When I went over to kill Bael'Gar I noticed that the gate mentioned in the quest text was not actually a texture, and you could kind of see through the crack in the gate a bit. I kind of assume that this quest is sort of referencing conspiracy theories that people may have had about the gate in vanilla, can any older players confirm this?

You can only open the gate from one side.The side Bael Gar is on. Coming from the Crafter's area, you have a dead-end.

I played in Vanilla and when I first saw this gate, I really thought there was a conspiracy.
How do you open it?

Short answer, you don't open it. The shadowforge gate at the other end of the hall opens, but the one Bael'gar is guarding doesn't. I'd love to see another half of BRD. Maybe in another expansion they'll open it up like they did with Blackrock Caverns and Blackwing Descent.

Very simple the other side of the door is the section where the Black Anvil is. The door is just not passable.

I think we can all agree that the Dark Iron Highway is neither dark, nor made of iron, nor a highway.

Its name is even more misleading than the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

My theory (even though it goes a bit strange with the quest's text):

The players enter the Blackrock City through a cave opening in a slave mine.
That is definitely NOT the official entrance used by the Blackrock dwarves (and elemental/giant allies).

The way all those elite patrols are put between the two gigantic gates (one with the giant boss in front) definitely looks like that "highway" is the main path into the city.
Similar to how Ironforge has guards paired down the main hall where you enter the city.

To me the gigantic gate guarded by the giant boss is probably an official way into Blackrock City.
Similar to how Ironforge is entered through a gigantic gate - not some small hole in a mining tunnel.

While the goblin NPC does seem mystified by the gate, i think that gate is nothing more than one of the gates between Blackrock City and the official exit to the surface world.

As of patch 7.1.5, I found it very hard to get a group going for the quests in this dungeon, Blackrock Depths: Detention Block. Every group I was in went straight for the mole machine, jumped down and then finnished up the two bosses in the dungeon. I guess it makes sense because it provides more experience doing this and people level faster this way. People can just queue up for this one and do it very fast. However, I enjoy doing my quests in the dungeon, at least one time, and I don't like having quests in my logbook hanging around. But I understand. Still, I do not want to use the excuse of, come back later when you are higher level, because I am doing it now when I am leveling.

Anyway, that is my two cents.

Description

At one end of the Dark Iron Highway stands a massive gate much like the one that protects Shadowforge City on the opposite side. However, we have no idea what's behind it!

All we know is that it's heavily guarded by Anvilrage patrols and the molten giant Bael'gar. You simply must dispose of them and see if you can pry that gate open!

Just imagine what could lie behind it...there could be an entire other half of the city we never knew about! Or nothing! Who knows!
