As you enter the room clear out everything.
Just before the relic coffer room on the left side of the door way there is an Item/Closed Picture Frame on the wall you can click on. Open it, you may need to read the little text.

Dark Keeper Bethek will spawn at the doorway behind you along with 3-4 guards.

He will drop the Dark Keeper Key you need to unlock the safe.

You can then collect the Heart of the Mountain from underneath it, saving you having to open up all the Relic Coffer Doors :)

Like the version of this quest pre-4.0.3, you will need 20 relic coffer keys to open all 20 of the doors. I was hoping that requirement might have been removed, but it hasn't.

If you want instructions on how to get to the blackvault room, do a search for the The Heart of the mountain item, not the quest. The third comment log from the top will give you good directions as how to get there.

Just completed this, you only need 12 Relic Coffer Keys to open the 12 Relic Coffers.

This leads to Watchman Doomgrip spawning, when he dies a small chest and The Heart of the Mountain appear below the Dark Coffer.

The nook that the heart is located in will not open until you kill the 4 golems in the room, which require you to open all of the coffers."

Confirmed this on my level 85 Druid. Trying to get achievement and doing the quests while I was there and I didn't have to open any of the coffers. I could loot the item through the wall, very funny!

Quite surprised nobody has mentioned this yet, but this is probably a reference to the Arkenstone from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. It was also known as the Heart of the Mountain, and was uncovered from Erebor, the Lonely Mountain. The only difference is that the Arkenstone was white, not red.

As of 4.3, you will need all of the keys again to open the vaults and get the Heart of the Mountain. Blizzard has fixed the exploit allowing you to loot through the walls, making it necessary to do things the right way again.

As of patch 4.3, you can no longer use the glitch to receive the Heart of the Mountain without opening all of the coffers. If you try, you will receive a message that the object is out of Line of Sight. I have tested this multiple times on different runs to be sure.

Now it seems to be impossible to complete. Very low key drop rate + bug when all keys disappear after opening 1 door. Bug with clicking through was fixed.

As of today the glitch that allowed you to click upon the Heart of the Mountain through the wall has been fixed, apparently, as I am getting the message that the "Target is not in line of sight" which is unfortunate as keeping a group together long enough to have everyone with the keys, and get to the Heart as it is no longer a part of the dungeon that needs to be done is...difficult to say the very least. Ah well.

Seems the bugfix to prevent players from completing the quest without opening the door, now actually prevents players from the opening the door at all.

Killed the Dark Keeper today, but kept getting target not in line of sight when trying to open it.

A prior post suggested farming the mobs outside the instance for the relic coffer keys. A word to the wise: do not log out while doing this - you will lose all of your keys! And, as mentioned before, if you go into the instance, do not leave. I learned the hard way after farming only 2 keys outside in an hour, and then getting 2 more after clearing the ring around the detention block (with my level 57 prot pally). I went out to get more keys and ended up losing all of them. Saw 2 level 85's out there and gave up when I realized I was competing for the key drops. Good luck and gratz to any who can complete this quest at level.

1. open the portrait - this will spawn a random Dark Keeper X
2. read the sign under the portrait to find out which Dark Keeper was spawned and where he is.
3. Kill it and loot the key.
4. go back to the Vault and finish the quest.
- No need to open any coffer keys

EDIT: Thanks Koumaru: I was indeed not right.
opening the Dark Coffer grants you a green item.. nothing else. You still need to open ALL relic coffer doors to make Watchman Doomgrip spawn and only after killing him him you can loot The Heart of the Mountain. And since the coffer keys are now nearly impossible to collect, I say #$^& this quest.

I wrote a Guide to help people out =)

This Quest is not for the weary hearted it takes time to Complete, and has to be done a certain way, it's a fun instance once it's understood.

Confirmed: 12 Keys are Needed to Complete the Quest - Heart of the Mountain

Once you are in the Coffer room and Have killed Verek you will see a Photo on the wall to the Left facing the Vaults. The Photo when you read it will tell you WHO you need to KILL and WHERE he is FOUND! Kill him and Loot the Key.

The Dark Coffer Key can be found in various locations, at the front of the Coffer Room
where Verek (Level 53 Elite Beast *** Tameable Dog ***).

There is a Picture on the Wall that OPENS UP - read it and it will tell you :
WHO you have to kill and WHERE they are.

Below is a list of the Random Bosses and their Names.

I suggest you use Wow Head or Something similar to find their Location if you are unsure, being random they are anywhere in the Dungeon pretty much. They DO have the Dark Coffer Key though.

Once you have Looted the Dark Coffer Key and have headed back to the Coffer Room, your group can proceed to use the keys gathered off the random mobs and open the 12 Coffers that require the Relic Coffer Keys (different to the Dark Coffer Key - There is only 1 of those per run).

This will bring to life a group of Golems that you will need to kill.

Afterwards you can get prepared to have your quest completed.

All that's left to do is :Click the big Square Vault on the back Wall between the Relic Coffers - This Requires the person with the Dark Coffer Key looted off the Boss.

There will then be ANOTHER Chest inside which Requires the Dark Coffer Key as well, this will NOT contain the Heart Of The Mountain item, you need to hover further down and you will see another Clickable Compartment that will contain your Quest Item.

Loot your Item and Hand in your Quest! =)

Very Useful Tips :

* Relic Coffer Keys Stack in 20, and are not Soulbound - However it has not been confirmed if
the Keys can be traded amongst players of the same or different realm
since the "Blizz Fixes"

* Only 1 Dark Coffer Key drops per run and only that person can open the
Dark Coffer and Vault

* Since the Keys disappear upon Exiting the Dungeon, you can no longer purchase the Keys
on the Auction House or Send them to other Players or Characters.

* Teleporting In and Out via the Dungeon Finder removes the Relic Coffer Keys

* Dying and Re-Entering the Dungeon removes Keys

* Dying and being Resurrected by another player intermittently removes Keys - seems to
Coincide with wether or not the body has been released or not

* Hearthing and Teleporting back in via the Dungeon Finder removes Keys

* Re-Starting the run removes the Keys

* Keys are NOT Soulbound

Please Note : After your Achievement pops up for killing them Emperor and you get the Dungeon Complete Notification, it is EXTREMELY RARE that a group has actually completed the Dungeon since it in fact has 21 Bosses - Technically 22 as Verek has a Mini Boss with him.

You need 12 Relic coffer keys to get this Item. Loot those from the arena spectators and the dwarves within the prison block. Should easily yield 12 or more.

DO NOT leave the instance under any circumstance, your keys will be lost.

Should you have trouble finding the room, go back to the entrance, enter the mole machine and go to the domicile. Exit the room, turn right and right again, down the ramp, through the door and you should be on a platform with a nice view of the shadowforge. Follow the platform and look to the first door on your right.

In there are a group of mobs, and in the room behind that two bosses (a guard and his dog) and several golems. That is where you need to go.

You do NOT need to kill the Dark Keeper. It is entirely optional.

As of 7.1.5, I couldn't click the thing past the locked coffer. It has been fixed. I had to start killing mobs untill all doors were opened, and then kill the guys that pops up.

Was a pain, and I really, really, hate this quest.

Quick refresher: You need to kill enough random mobs around the dungeon that you can open every single coffer. Then the golems will activate and the key mob will show up. Kill them and the Heart of the Mountain will appear behind another section of wall that opens up. Not sure if you have to also get the black key. But if you're doing this, you'll probably also want to do that anyway.

Description

For years I have sought a certain gem. It is called the Heart of the Mountain and it's the size of your fist! The Dark Iron dwarves have it locked in their vault and, try as I may, they won't let me purchase it.

So I must resort to force.

Fight your way to The Black Vault near the Hall of Crafting, breach its secret safe and gain the Heart. To do that, you must defeat Watchman Doomgrip, and he won't appear until you've opened every relic coffer in the vault!
