Really easy one. Drain his health down while you are in the air with your flying mount. Avoid meteors/fireballs.
The tactic I used is basicly staying in range, above him, flying around him clockwise while draining his soul. This way you will only take the shadow bolt damage (800ish). If you get cripple on you start going anti clockwise, so you dont run into the fireballs. The fireballs really hurt also dismounts you, and you die. Will take you a while till you suck his soul out, once hes on 1% hes starting to walk to the portal and leaves the place.
If you seem to take too much damage during an attempt you can flee away by just flying far from him.
Fun quest, good luck on it!

If you have more than 6k health, the shadowbolts alone WONT kill you. They are just there to scare you. However, dont get too close or else he will punch you and that is what can screw you.

I was having a bit of trouble figuring out how to stay out of melee range while avoiding the fireballs when I noticed a pally in the area. He had the quest as well so we teamed up which made the quest trivial. With two beams he dies twice as quickly and if one person takes a lot of damage, they can fly away, out of combat, and heal up while the other person keeps draining him. I ran off at one point, landed and bandaged while the pally kept killing him. I flew back, helped finish him off and we both got quest credit.

If you are having trouble doing it solo, i recommend getting Mark of the Wild, Power Word: Fortitude, and Shadow Protection.

These together made him stupidly easy.

-Fly to him, but stay far far away while still being able to use the soul cannon. The soul cannon has a range of 60 yards, which should be plenty. The key is to be 60 yards away from him, not 60 yards directly above him. If you are directly above him he will melee you and you will die.

-Activate cannon, dodge his fireballs with your flying mount.

- At no point should you ever get into his melee range, or he will hit you for ~3-6k. If this happens even once you are probably dead. Possibly in mid-air, and requiring a spirit rez. Stay in range of the soul cannon, out of his melee range. Basically just fly around while he follows you. Don't go too far though, or you will lose combat and he will reset. Don't worry about the shadowbolts, they won't kill you unless you get melee'd first.

- Multiple people can get credit for subduing him even if they aren't grouped. I started using my soul cannon on him when someone else already had him down to 50%, and I still got credit for it. I was not grouped with the other person.

Activate cannon from 60 yards away, kite him around with your flying mount, never get into melee range, and avoid fireballs, don't be directly above him or you'll get melee'd.

A good starting point is somewhere beyond the reach of the regular mobs below (warlocks with imps). you don't really need to fly up and down, just find a comfortable spot where you can see him and not run into a tree/hillside

Activate the Soul Cannon, he doesnt really run after you, he just casts his shadowbolt and fireballs. just face him,
(1) when you see him cast, strafe to the left or the right, just keep strafing in a circle around him,
(2) he will also cast cripple which will slow you down, at which point he will take a few steps towards you. just move backwards or away from him,
and he'll start to cast his spells again. at which point, see point (1)
(3) when he's like 1%, he will start walking towards the stone archway at the end of the stip, just follow behind him he'll eventually go into it and disappear

If you're a mage who does the tanking duty for high king Maulgar, just chuck all your stam gear on before you do this quest.

So far, this quest seems to be more of a fight to try and get him to NOT evade bug than any actual challenge. He's evade bugged on me at least 10 times in a row.

I'll be in range of him, he's tossing fireballs and shadowbolts at me, soul thing is draining his life...BAM evade bug. Again.

It seems like him trying to go over obstacles on the ground can cause him to evade bug, getting slightly too far away for a second can cause him to evade bug, sneezing causes him to evade bug....

Get someone else to attack him too, so that if his attention bugs on one person for some reason, he doesn't reset.

So, make sure you fly in circle around him. I got 6,5k HP and at the end of battle got 2,3k Left.

Remeber, if you're a warlock, to use your Demon Armor rather than your Fel Armor for that little shadow resist.

i found this quest a bit annoying.

if you fly too low you risk getting aggro from the casters,
fly too high you end up getting hit by his melee just to stay in casting range.

To all Druids out there who have done the Swift Flight Form quest, but never bought an epic flying mount and are doing the Netherwing quests for the +45 stamina trinket, you cannot use the Soul Cannon while shapeshifted, much like the Booterang quest can be done from an actual mount but not Swift Flight Form. Hopefully this saves you all some time, as I am in flight to Wildhammer Stronghold while writing this in order to drop 200g on a mount I'm never going to use again.

You don't have to actually "beat" this guy. The quest only calls for you to get him to go thru his portal. I found that if u hover over his portal, and wait for him to walk near, then shoot him with the cannon, and start kiting him back, he will eventually step in. Quest Complete! ;-P

I tried to kite him into the portal, but it didn't work. I did find a nice bug that made this quest even easier. just hide behind the wall of the portal like i did in the pic.

Easiest way to do this quest after it took me about 4 maybe 5 tries to do it is to wait until hes is close to the portal. Activate the cannon and hide behind the pillar ( i found the right side if your behind the portal to be the easiest one to use) Make sure you have LOS on him or your be subject to his attacks. He will stand there while you drain him and you wont take damage. But you have to make sure LOS is the issue the cannon will still work however

Confirmed, although i kept myself out of LOS, he was in front of the portal and i hid behind the right pillar, he just kept trying to cast Cripple on me while i slowly drained his life away, but when he got to about 5% or so he started walking along his normal path, so i had to follow him until he got to 1%.

All you guys talking about hiding out of line of sight are missing the best part of the quest. If you just continuously strafe in a circle around him the whole time, all the shadowbolts he throws at you will keep following you around. I think I had like 5 or 6 little purple skulls chasing after me at one point (with riding crop), and I found it hilarious. Of course when he cripples you you won't be able to out-fly the bolts, but they don't hurt too bad. Quite funny indeed.

Please elaborate a bit on this technique. either this bug has been fixed, or I am not exactly understanding. i am behind the pillar, still with LOS to have him in the 'beam', however, he has no problem hitting me and targeting me with all his attacks.

(by the way blizzard: was it really needed for an attack to have a knockback effect when you are in the air?)

I got lucky on this quest. I forgot that I had it, and was just doing "Disrupt the Twighlight Portal" when some alliance group did it. I got credit from quite a long way away.

well, I had almost given up on this quest, as I do not have coordination to fly around this guy (i kept accidently flying right over him, which = death, or fly too far away, which = he resets his health, while trying to dodge his attacks). as someone mentioned, i tried the trick behind one of the pillars, didn't work for me..he still hit me, except he would knock me back off the cliff, (which, if you fall off the cliff behind the pillar, you WILL have to spirit rez). so I decided I would try one last time...i didn't want to abandon this quest, as I spent quite a bit of gold on the mats for the cannon. here is the thing: in the photos someone posted one that appears they are not flying, but have landed on TOP of the arch way. they are still flying; when the beam is active, your mount has the appearance it has landed.(ie-wings at its sides) took me a bit to figure this out....probably will not for most of you, but it did for me.

so, yeah...start off above the archway, just above it, so you are flying. as soon as he is coming, fly forwards just a bit to put him in range. click the beam, back up so you are directly above the arch way (as in the pic posted) do not land, as landing will break contact with the beam. as soon as you are above the archway, sit back, relax and wait. none of his attacks will hit you (as many have said).

I know most of what I just said has been said, but I thought maybe I could clarify some of it, as I had read and reread everything posted here, and still could not get it to work, just hope this helps someone, because if you got as frustrated as I did at first with this quest, well....yeah..

I just wanted to do this quickly so followed the strat from top of portal but died a couple of times. So practiced a couple of different things
What I found was get ur mount in a position to attack him with the soul cannon make it so u can back up over the top of portal so ue still siphoning but he can't see u and walah he ees no more u may hay to follow him in the last bit as he walks away and breaks the summon pick him up and he has no more fight in him walks straight to portal swears he will get u back and gone I sustained no damage whatso ever quest complete

A little confusing, at first. Tried the "fly around him in circles" method to no avail. Tried the "hang out above the portal" method....again, to no avail. Hit him with the beam when he's right in front of the portal, then fly back through the portal and hide behind the right hand pillar of the portal. Try not to break LOS, and if in the right position, you'll take no damage what-so-ever. I posted a screenshot of my position....worked like a charm once i figured out the correct positioning!

If you look in the screenshot I posted above you will see that I am flying (although it looks like my mount is landed, but in midair) on the RIGHT side of the portal out of Line-of-Sight. I am also very close to the top section of the portal, which allows me to avoid any of the dismounting meteors that fall from the sky.

It is easy. Simply wait for him to path by, zap him with the item, then quickly fly into the same position. Then just sit and wait and you shouldn't take any more damage.

Anyway, the strategy "fly around / far from him" works better of anyone. if the ray interrupts, don't worry he doesn't regain life.

Did they hotfix this or something? Did it a couple of weeks ago as my hunter, LOS'd him behind a pillar no problem at all. Tried it just now on my priest and his dismounting meteors are crazy now and appear to totally ignore LOS as long as you're mounted, dismount you and blast you back wards off the cliff/into the ogre pat or forwards into the shadow guys or him.

nvm I got it after another try but it seems you have to be MUCH more precise now than last time I did it.

I went behind the Portal as the screen shot suggested, and he simply chain casted cripple which never hit me. He did not go into Evade, and he didn't advance on me and attack. Easy as pie.

Just fly around him using the strafe keys. Died once due to me going too close to him, nearly died second time because of fireball knocking me off my mount, but used feign death. Like previous posts say, avoid his fireballs if you have crippe on by flying the opposite way

With the strafing strategy is concerned i get the problem, that he is hitting me even though I'm way above his head. Dodging his fireballs, is one thing, i can manage that, but i can't dodge his crunching damage. I assume, though, that this some sort of bug, as no one else here have mentioned it.

If you die in mid-air and have to spirit res, it is best to wait for the resurrection sickness to wear off as it affects the damage of the Soul Cannon, bringing him down to only around 75%.

Wait for him to come close to the portal. Start channeling, land on the portal (most possible distance to him), channel and wait. Repeat.

The hard part I found with this quest was his crippling debuff. The slowed movement I can cope with but the -50% stamina is a real bitch as when the debuff wears off your max hp goes back to whatever it was but your current hp stays the same.

After 2-3 cripple attacks I was down to like 10-15% hp and had to fly away to eat. In the end I accomplished the mission by using the portal to get out of LoS as a number of people have suggested, it worked first time (hovering just above the portal) so I'd advise giving that a shot if you are having problems :)

I am not sure how this worked out, but there was a Horde already killing the Subduer guy, and when he died I got credit. I didn't land or do anything at all!! Very easy quest *giggle*

You don't have to fly around to avoid anything. Stand on top of the portal at 8, 43 and nothing will hit you there!

See screenshot. very easy to do without getting hit once. just wait on portal til he shows. then get close enough to zap him with cannon and move toward either pillar and stay behind it. He will never touch you once and you can stay there til quest is complete.

Confirming as well. Even if you have to kite him to the portal first...just drop down onto those coordinates and wait. He can't hit you at all. :D

The above methods are unnecessary. Since I couldn't figure out how to bug it i had to figure how to do it legit.

Here's the trick
The pillar (obelisk) stones with 4 mobs channeling some spell around them, kite him to one of them. In order for him to get to you, he has to go around the stones. So what i did was just kite him (in circles) around those stones. It keeps him out of melee range, and when i was crippled it bought me enough time to move out the way.

The first time I did this one, which was shortly after 2.1, it was by teaming up with another player. We weren't in the same group or even the same faction, but as mentioned above, we both got a complete when Reth'hedron went through the portal. Neither of us used any tricks. We just flew around and zapped him.

I did this on a second character today, but there was nobody to team up with this time. So, I decided to try hiding behind the portal. It worked, but not exactly as I planned. I was a little slow getting behind the pillar (and I went to the left side), and was actually dismounted. However, instead of falling to the ground, I sorta stuck to the side of the portal, hanging seemingly in mid-air. It looked like I was stuck to flypaper. My cannon continued firing, however, and the quest completed without me taking any damage. I was even able to mount up from that spot. It was pure luck, and I doubt I'd be able to reproduce it if I had a thousand shots at it.

This quest is a breeze if you have the 310% speed mount with the 10% trinket :|
Wow... If you happen to have those, just fly above him (but not straight above) in an anti-clockwork motion. That's it.

I couldnt run back to my body after i died, all the mountains are in the way, so i had to go back and GY rez. Did anyone else have a problem with this? or was i just not able to find the pathway through the mountains?

Just flew round him (just over his head height) about 20 yards to the side of him, when he does cripple, just change your direction. Did this until 1% when I unluckily got hit by a fireball and got dismounted. I kept the beam up (frost nova'd all the mobs) then I had to take a health pot and a fel blossom to absorb some damage , he walks over to the portal and bam done. Easily done, I just messed up at the end so the last part shouldn't apply to you, but do be aware that if you get dismouted towards the end, the mobs on the ground (the non-elite anyway) don't hit very hard and if you can keep yourself alive for an extra 10 seconds then you don't need to redo the whole thing. Took me a few tries to get it right (got hit by him the first 2) but after reading about staying out to the side of him it was an easy quest to do.

I have a much easier way of killing him.

All you need to do is flying near him, use the Soul Cannon thing. Once you start, go to the gate where there Orc's all around it. Stay on your mount though. Just fly behind the gates pillar. Basically, get out of his los.

And sit and wait til he's close to dead. And boom, quest complete. :)

I take it back I had to use my slow mount so he wouldn't disappear but at the end when he hit 2% he started to walk away and i was about two secs from writing the nastiest ticket to a gm but didn't reset so i just put it back on him just in case all he did was walked back to gate and disappeared and completed

I'd highly recommend bringing some SR gear with you. As a priest i had my own SR buff and had my cloak and Illidarian neckpiece. But you could use anything with SR. It usually has stam too so it works well.

With 175 i only lost a total of about 3k health and resisted all but 1 cripple. That was right near the end anyway when he was about 5%.

Confirming the LoS trick still works; was a bit confused by the descriptions of how to do it (partly because I didn't believe it could be that easy after the other posts about dodging and what attacks he uses!), but decided to give it a go.

Used the soul cannon on him as he was approaching the portal, then just flew through it and hid the other side. And that's absolutely all you need to do! The cannon is a channelled attack; not something you keep having to fire, so you really do just use the cannon, fly through the portal, hide behind the pillars and watch as his health ticks down!

Don't panic if you see him start to cast something; he kept trying to cast cripple on me, but kept failing because of the LoS issue. Fun, easy quest!

One thing: Getting off your mount doesn't necessarily end the fight, especially if you do it at the end when he begins his march towards the door.

Confirmed on 7/03/08 that the "LoS behind a pillar" trick still works. Was even easier this time than the last time I did this quest and used the top of the portal to break LoS.

Hide-behind-the-pillar method confirmed. Fly into the pillar. I also flew slightly up into the corner of the pillar and the roof, so I wouldn't move side to side. Reth'hedron appeared to be shaking his head when I got it done correctly. at about 10%, he turns around, and I had to follow him to stay in range. The fly-about-him-and-dodge-the-missiles method is a lot more fun, however.

Holy paladin. I started out by the gate, got knocked off my mount, but just stood by the thing and healed through his damage. The channeling finished and the quest completed.

Lol funny thing. I had the enchant Deathfrost on both my main and offhand weapons when i did this quest. As the beam was channeling, the Deathfrost kept proccing every 10 seconds or so, usually refreshing itself.
I dont know if it actually slowed his meteor casting but it did his banish which was nice.

I just did the quest today, and it seems that he no longer casts any meteors, just cripple and shadowbolt. I did not do any of the tricks just kinda circled around him channeling, he hit me with every shadowbolt and cripple, but with 11k health I easily survived the fight.

Soloable.. did it as a mage today, that was pretty easy, i was prepared
used some shadow resistance gear (about 150 shadow resistance)
and ofc, epic flying

Meteors are very easy to avoid, simply fly around him in a circle

Cripple debuff ( -50% health ) can be easily avoided by fly out - fly in.
To avoid debuff use this:
When he casts it just fly away from his cripple range to prevent the debuff
Life drain will stop, but hes health wont reset, just be quick to fly back and reactivate draining gun
Use this simple macro:
/target Reth'hedron
/cast Soul Cannon

Just soloed very easy, grab him with the soul canon and then fly behind one of the pillars of the portal, i just hovered on the spot and he didnt move, jsut kept trying to cast cripple. No fireballs or anything. I uploaded a picture of the position i was in. Goodluck.

Just did this quest for the first time today on my frost mage.

1. You cannot get the soul cannon to tag him from behind the portal, you need to be about 10 feet in front of it.

2. If you get dismounted trying to get yourself behind the pillar and he gets within your melee range, you are pooped.

3. Just moving back once you've tagged him so that you are hovering over the middle of the top of the portal puts you out of LOS...I just moved about using my Q and E keys just in case of stray fireballs.

4. Voila! One subdued bad guy!

I actually found it much easier to simply strafe left and right repeatedly, dodging the fireballs as necessary. I also zoomed my camera out all the way, which helped a great deal. The various LoS tricks above didn't work for me, but it wasn't too hard the "old fashioned" way. I found that flying in circles was needlessly complex and ended up distracting me too much.

Completed first try.

Pretty simple quest as long as you keep moving. Just like all the other posts mention, hit him with the cannon and circle him. The fireballs that fall from the sky are few and easy to dodge. He will cast a spell on you to slow you down but it fades quickly. I did not use any LoS tricks, just circled. If you get out of range, the cannon goes on cool down but you will be able to reengage it.

As for the shadow bolts he casts, I had just gotten the Skybreaker Whip which is a quest reward for doing the sky races for Netherwing rep (Riding Crop equivilant). My point is, as I was circling the bolts couldn't catch me. At one time I had 3 shadowbolts chasing me in this circle.

Instinct will help you decide which way to circle and when to change so don't sweat it. Good Luck!

You can still cast spells while you channel the soul cannon. So if you are a healer like me and get knocked off your mount, you can pretty much "tank" him while you do the quest.

Well the tricks dont work as good anymore. I did this quest on my 2 other toons and I set on top of the portal near the back and it worked fine. Since the Lich King came on it isnt as nice now. The cannon doesn't last as long as it did before. It only takes out about one quarter of his health. But the sitting on top of the portal or behind the right pillar is a thing of the past. Now the fireballs come over the top at you and it goes through the pillar. Plus he is a lvl 73 now and before he was a lvl 70. I think that a group is going to be necessary to keep him tied up enough to lower his health. If anyone has any kind of success with this guy by soloing I will be back to read and try it. But when you do get straight to the point about where to sit or how to lower his health. No Bull S, please.

The shadow bolts can be annoying, especially in cloth or even mail. Fly around him in circles and start ducking and weaving if crippled to avoid fireballs. Start the quest away from any of the group mobs, in case you fly too low to avoid something and end up getting aggro on a bunch of acolytes.

Hiding behind the right portal pillar still works, though a fireball may dismount you when you are back there. The quest still works though, if you are behind the pillar and dismounted. I had to use the cannon a few times to get him all the way to 1%, but as long as you stay behind the pillar he can't hurt you.

That was super easy.

All i did was went up to him and started using the Soul Cannon, then I flew behind the right pillar on the portal and he just stood there on the other side XD

Solo'd it as 73 hunter.
Just flew near him and used the Soul Cannon.
Not even necessary to do anything, as his fireballs barely do any damage at all.

the quest rewards are so redundant, did blizzard really think that anyone would use a green item after grinding a epic flying mount and all the way to honored with netherwing and not have at least full blues?

Dont know if it is an error or something, but once I get far enough to avoid his spells, he resets his HP. Also his shadow bolts hit me for about 800, and his life drops quite slow with the Soul Cannon (441 damage per tick, on 151k HP). Did it using the "behind the portal trick", but it would have been totally impossible without it.

Just to note... if you're a level 80 tank-specced class, it IS possible to do this quest from the ground.

Simply go about fighting him like normal, taking precautions against his nasty Cripple attack (-50% Stamina) and once he's in critical range, you can simply activate the Soul Cannon and he'll run like a little girl. I'm not sure if you can actually kill him or if you have to activate the Soul Cannon. Just to be safe, I activated the cannon once he was below 10% health and got a Quest Complete once he fled.

As a Paladin, he didn't hit too hard and what damage I did take was easily mitigated by use of Shadow Resist Aura and Seal of Light. This was in rather poor Prot gear, so YMMV.

As a lvl 80 druid, I simply flew a couple of yards directly above him and started the cannon, he threw 3 cripples on me, one of them hit. I basically remained in the same position until he went back into the portal, making this quest extremely simple.

Did this quest as an 80 shadow priest. Didn't read the quest and just attacked him on the ground and used the cannon on him when he was on 1% and wouldn't die. Very easy to complete even this way for 80 characters.

Just did it w\ a 75 warlock, who has never been to Northrend, except 1 instance per day. Just fly around him and stay in range so as not to reset him and you'll be fine.

really easy as a level 80, all his spells miss you, and 151k is nothing anymore :) I dps'ed him to about 20%, then used the cannon and followed him to the portal. You will probably need to kill the mobs around the portal to get out of combat.

As a professional level 85 Death Knight, I do suggest doing this the intended way with the cannon and flying around. Using your straight battle prowess WILL kill the guy, and that's just no good.

Unless of course, you're cautious and get most of his health down before cannoning.

prolly worth noting, although you can 2 shot this mob at 85, you do actually need to use the cannon (channeled but you can still attack) and let him rp back to the portal, on the plus side its only about a 30-45 sec respawn.

I just got this quest after doing Disrupting the Twilight PortalDisrupting the Twilight Portal.

So fly from the East side of Shadowmoon Valley to the West side of Nagrand to do Disrupting the Twilight Portal Disrupting the Twilight Portal then back to the East side of Shadowmoon Valley to turn it in. Then get Subdue the SubduerSubdue the Subduer and have to go all the way back to Nagand and back again? C'mon Blizz...How about a pop up when Disrupting the Twilight Portal Disrupting the Twilight Portal is complete at least.

Im a 90 Frost Mage and this was really hard to do without killing him.. multiple times. In the end, I found him at full health, used the cannon straight away and then flew behind one of the pillars of the portal. He then decided not to die and run back into the portal - yay!

The easiest way to do this one is to be almost above him, and move up and down.
By moving up & down, his shots miss you.

Killing him is a mistake. You're trying to subdue him, not kill him.
Staying still is also a mistake. His shots will hit and kill you before you subdue him.

i was having problems with the gun killing him in three hits at level 90, but I was able to complete the quest after all.

After removing my armor and weapons I was able to lower him below 10%hp and then trigger the gun to complete the quest.

Hope this helps in a post 6.0 world

As a lvl 90 DK (ilvl 533) this might seem like an impossible task, and you might be right, because it is impossible to do it if you don't know how to. I for an instance tried and failed for 5 hours total. i used every trick in the book, i were dissapointed, even mad at myself for waisting so much time, when i could have done better things, like raiding, or doing other quests. but then it hit me, what if i fly up high, drop all my gear into my bags, then dissmount. everything going good in my new plan. so far... when i were falling down, i realised i had forgot one verry important thing, and that was to ready my gun, so in full desperation, i looked through my bags, found it finally, then just before i were supposed to hit the gun, i dragged it out of my bags and released in the open field, pressed enter and there i laid, my character were dead on the ground, and i had just deleted the gun and the quest allong with it. and that was how i failed the quest. so i just flew back to netherwing in darkmoon valley. got the quest again, flew back to Nagrand. i did the same thing, flew up high, bagged all my gear, but this time i made sure i had the gun on my action bar before i dissmounted. when it came to the point, i rethinked everything, i had rez sicknes. i were at 3,5k hp, so i figured out another plan, i flew back down to the point just above him, started channeling, and then, i sat there watching, hopefully, and in the verry end, he stopped casting at me, and started flee back to the portal, and i were so happy, i couldn't belive it was that easy to do it. and thats it, i hope you liked it, and give it thumbs up if you feel like it. :D peace out :D

As of patch 6.0.2 you cant do this quest traditionally as you do to much damage. I had to die, take rez sickness and then do the quest for it to work.

For level 90s:

1. First thing you will want to know is it does pop up on screen when this quest is completed.

2. Take off all your gear and get resurrection sickness.

3. Cancel the channel of the Soul Cannon by pressing escape when Reth' Hedron is at 1% health (really small sliver of health).

4. Allow him to walk away into the portal

OK, here you go. This is how I did it after many tries.

Most important!
Make sure that you take off ALL OF YOUR GEAR!
Make sure you have Res Sickness

Now, use the cannon to bring his life down to about 15 to 20%. Then just slap him to below 10%. Once below 10% he will hit 1 hit point and walk to the center of the area and then walk to the portal. You can be in a party but only 1 person do this if you are level 90.

If you're doing this as a high level, get rez sickness and remove all your gear. Even then you can kill him, so hit ESC as soon as his health reaches 5% or less, so he gives up and goes through the portal. I'm lvl 82 and killed him a few times.

As a collection of some of the best comments I saw, and through trial and error, here is my take on the easiest way to complete this quest.

I had the toughest time getting this quest completed because the beam would just kill him. I would spot him out, target him, and use the cannon. It seemed like no matter what I did, this guy would just die and I could never get the quest compLeted....UNTIL NOW!

If you're a high level toon (I'm at lvl 100) your first step is to strip. I unequipped all gear, trinkets, rings, weapons etc.

Step 2: Melee hit him. Yes, I'm aware that even in the quest it states to do this on your mount, but it is not necessary. I just punched him until he was down to about 10%.

Step 3: Use the soul canon.

I never incurred any damage whatsoever. I saw no attempts at him hitting me with melee attacks, nor did I see any fireballs. I didn't need my mount, and nor did I have to hide behind the pillar. It was really just this simple.

Having trouble completing this quest? A guild member was having trouble with this quest as well. She was level 100. Here is what she did.
She took all her items off. Waited for him to approach the portal. When she was on her flying mount she use the quest item the "cannon" and ran away to break the link and he started to walk in the portal and quest complete. It took her four tries but finally done.

For level 100 , just unwear all of ur items , if you want to dps him down to 5-10% hp just wear your weapon , then when he is finally reached down to 5% , go behind the portal and cast the item , he will flee away , cancel your item and wait till he reaches again the portal =D

Seems this item still retains its power after the Stat squish that came with Pandaria. If you want to complete the quest at level 100 you should try turning away from the mob after the damage from the rod ticks twice, or you can take the res sickness + get naked route if you prefer.

Personally I fancy the idea of a naked gnome whipping an Illidari Lord into submission.

As far as I can tell the event has been fixed. As long as you kill him with the Soul Cannon there should be no problem. My combat log says overkill on the last hit but he stayed on 1 health and completed the event.

As some have mentioned, the quest states "you must stay on your mount," but it is NOT necessary. In fact, if you are too high a level it is almost impossible to use just the Soul Cannon while on your flying mount to complete the quest.

I was only able to complete this with my lvl 85 dwarf warrior after stripping naked, falling to my death (to get rez sickness), and equipping a very low DPS melee weapon in one hand. (I keep a basic dagger on hand for these types of "rez sickness" quests. Why Blizzard are there so many of these "lower-their-health-but-don't-kill-them" type of quest in this game?)

Because I was NOT on a mount I could aggro Reth'hedron the Subduer while running to the portal so that he would follow me. Once there I brought down his health and then finally used the Soul Cannon. It did take a few seconds but he then eventually walked through the portal and my quest did complete.

EASY TO DO AS LVL 100. Portal in Western Nagrand (Outland) is located at 8.3 44.3. Fly there and land on top of the portal. You do NOT have to be mounted no matter what you may have read. Undress completely...all clothing, jewelry, weapons, etc. Stand on the edge at the top of the portal and wait for Reth'hedron the Subduer to walk by. Target him with the soul cannon. He will try to run away but will then give up and come back to the portal. He should go on through without you having to do anything else except to get dressed again and go turn in the quest. Easy-peasy! (And I'm *extremely* 'gaming-challenged'.)

Being at Patch 6.2.3 at the time of writing, and hitting very hard on these old mobs, I kept one-shotting him by mistake and not getting completion on the quest.

Even after reading the comments on here and a lot of trial and error with trying different things suggested, I still couldn't keep him alive long enough to trigger the quest/event of him walking to the portal.
Meleed to 10% and then cannon, insta kill....
Meleed to 15% and then cannon, still insta kill....

After a few tries, i decided to test how much dmg a single cannon tick would do to him, because he has to survive at least one and then start walking to the portal.

From that single first tick he was down to 52% - and this meant another tick should take him to 4%. So that's what i did.
Two ticks of cannon @ stripped down naked and lvl 100, and then he started walking to the portal. I got credit and quest completed.

I did not need to keep firing the cannon after he started walking into the portal, so there should be no need to time it exactly right for him to walk past the portal or anything like that. Just make sure cannon is the dmg that takes him below his (perhaps) 10% threshold, and he starts walking.

Literally everything I've seen says 'just get naked and punch him down, then use the cannon.' It's not worked for me for the past twenty minutes of trying this. He just dies anyway. This time I camped his spawn point, on my mount, and said the heck with it. Just fired the cannon right off the bat and let it drain him. This time, it worked! So if you can't get it to work at level 100 the way everyone else says, just stay without any gear or buffs, camp his spawn point, and use the cannon there.

As a level 100 hunter I had to get res sickness, take off all of my gear, and change out my "Lonewolf" talent in order to subdue him without killing him. Hope this helps.

I did this way overleveled. I had a problem where two hits from the soul cannon weren't enough to get him fleeing, but the third one killed him. Gear didn't seem to affect damage at all, so after at least a dozen tries I got a friend to hit him couple of times. Can't understate my relief, and the earlier frustration. Easily the most annoying WoW quest I've done.

I guess leveling myself further so that two hits would've gotten him fleeing would've been an option, but meh. Kind of poorly designed quest in this regard.

You have to deal less than 50% on each tick from the soul cannon. The only way to do that is to REMOVE ALL YOUR GEAR and it should work.

For later expansions this needs to be changed or it will be impossible unless you have RESS SICKNESS.

Guys, for all 110 lvl (Legion players), I tried to take off ALL of my equippement, even rings, trinket, etc..., I even tried resurection sickness, didn't work either.

SOLUTION: (even if the quest tells you to stay mounted), get on the ground and punch him until 10%. Then you can lunch the spell given in the quest (Soul canon) to complete the quest.

As a 110 hunter (legion) you still kill him naked and with resurection sickness

Solution:
1) Get naked
2) get resurection sickness
3) punch him until 16%
4) Use the canon
5) First hit damage him 15%
6) Press esc fast to cancel ray
7) at 1% mob walk to portal
8) He scream and quest be complete.

An easier solution is buying a toy from new Dalaran called "Soft foam sword" which mortally wounds the enemy. So you can finish it off with the soul cannon

Done on 7.1.5, here is exactly what I did:
1) Take off all your equipment
2) Fly high, fell down and get ressurection sickness
3) Channel the cannon on Reth'hedron the Subduer (still naked with ressurection sickness)
4) He'll go to the portal on 1%, follow him and you'll get quest credit (canon was still channeling but it turned off after getting the quest credit)

As a lvl 110 character, I tried the "get naked, ress-sickness, use item" approach like 5-6 times, but it didn't work, so I thought I would share my slightly modified version of this approach that eventually worked for me:

Take off all your equipment including weapons. If you feel too exposed, you can keep your shirt and tabard on.
Fly high on a mount and jump down to die and get ressurection sickness.
Stand on the ground close to the portal at (8.3, 44.3 - Nagrand, Outland) and wait for Reth'hedron the Subduer to get close
Fist-slap the npc a couple of times carefully (or use a very low-dmg spell) to get him to around 24% hp
Stop attacking and use the Soul Cannon
After 2 ticks the npc should drop to 1% hp and start running away from the portal, then towards it. Follow him, use sprint or whatever if needed.
After he disappears in the portal you complete the quest.

I did this quest today (27.3.2017). I took all my gear off.
I did not try to get the ressurection sickness.
I began channeling the Soul Cannon.
Reth'hedron the Subduer took two ticks of damage.
After reaching 1 life remaining, he started to walk towards the portal. The damage still ticking, but he did not take any.
Upon his arrival the to portal, I got the quest credit.
The beam stopped.

I was not mounted.
I am NElf Druid. Level 110.

I'm a 77 subtlety rogue. Hitting him with the cannon straight off kills him pretty quickly but gives no credit. I had to get naked, melee him with fists from the ground and then when he was down to almost no health, I hit him with the cannon. He started walking towards the portal at the West end. I followed him and the cannon was active the entire time. He shouted about "merely a setback!" or some nonsense, then disappeared once standing in the portal. At that point I got credit and put my clothes back on.

How to do this at level 110. patch 7.2.5.

Step 1:take off all your gear.
step 2: Kill yourself and take the Resurrection sickness Debuff.
step 3: fly to the NPC
step 4: use the ray to get him down to low health.
step 5: when he is at low health use escape or fly out of range to break the ray.
step 6: turn in quest.

As of 7.2 if you are level 110, being naked is a must. I killed him with the cannon right away without stripping. After I stripped, it took 2 clicks to get his health down far enough so he would go in the portal.

Since most of the advice is so incredibly vague, I had to figure this out myself. And if you're like me, and the "just take off your gear and use your cannon on him, worked for me xD" advice didn't work for you, then you're going to have to find your own way. But what you need to know is basically this:

1. You need to start by getting him to under 10% health without killing him. Do this either by getting rez sickness and taking off all your equipment or get help from a lower level friend.
2. Once he is under 10%, THEN you can use your cannon

So yes, just taking off your equipment and using the cannon might work, if the cannon happens to get him to under 10% before it kills him, which it didn't for me.

So just try out a couple of different things, like a combination of rez sickness and some of your equipment, no rez sickness, and some equipment, maybe some low-level equipment, etc. Whatever you think of, and you'll get it eventually.

Level 110 mage here. What i had to do is get naked and res sickness then i had to bring him to around 20%-23%. Then use the cannon to bring him down below 10% without killing him. when used the cannon at 21% it dropped him to 8%. hope this helps someone cause i spent the last 2 nights trying different stuff and talking with gms.

For those struggling with this quest I was 101 and tried everything that was stated in previous comments but to no avail so after all my gear was off I jumped off a cliff and rezed at the grave giving myself rez sickness with that I was able to auto attack him until he reached 10% then use the canon and it worked. Hope this helps you out.

If you accidentally kill him due to being high lvl, he's got almost instant respawn timer.

Also, the Soft Foam Sword toy does not work on him. Maybe because he's elite.

What I did as a level 110 warlock was simply to remove all equipment and equip my fishing pole and turn on auto attack. Each attack did about 400 - 600 damage, or about 1% per hit. I just sat back and waited about five minutes.

I followed some other people's suggestion about turning away from Reth, then I used the Soul Canon when Reth'hedron was at 9%. I hit escape at 1% and the guy walked away into the portal. The quest was complete...

I'm sure a slightly better weapon would have made the encounter go faster but I didn't want to chance it. But no death and rez sickness is required.

Dicas para fazer isso no nível 110 ou superior:

1. Tire todo o seu set (roupa, aneis, pescoço, arma, TUDO, fique com 0 de ilvl)
2. Se jogue de um lugar alto e morra (sim, é sério)
3. Reviva no anjo para pegar o enjoo de morte.
4. Volte para o boss, de preferência, pegue-o mais próximo do portal.
5. Fique no chão, dê murros nele até que ele fique entre 40-30% de hp, e já está bom o suficiente
6. Use o item e vá seguindo ele até o portal.

it's all there in the quest text:

just stay up in the air on your flying mount and start channeling the soul cannon. he will fire some stuff at you that will knock you back so just make sure you stay in range. orbit around him for the duration and refresh the channel each time the casting ends.
at 2HP he will yell something, go to the portal, follow him to the portal, watch him ho inside and voila quest complete

Just a heads-up for anybody doing this at max level, the quest item can proc Netherlight crucible traits when used, causing him to instantly die. I highly recommend unequipping your artifact weapon before trying to subdue him.

The objective of the quest is not to just zap him, but to get him low enough to trigger quest completion.

Try using Soft Foam Sword and then zapping him with the item you get.
