Wood mites will spawn from the treants around the edges of the Bone Wastes. They won't always spawn when you kill the treants, but when they do there will be around five or so mites. The mites are very easy to kill; they'll pretty much die in one hit to anything i.e. a hunter's explosive trap.

Try to find a Rotting Forest-Rager which looks like a big walking tree. When it dies, there's *MUCH* more termites spawning than with usual treants.

If you kill big walking trees that looks like ancients 6-8 of Wood Mites will spawn. If you kill small ones trents 4-5 Wood Mite's will come.

Found some around 40,48.

They did drop 06 for me on every kill.
I used Volley and Explosive trap cause of the cooldown.
They die with one hit.

There seems to be a bug while using Magma totem to kill them.
I would drop Magma totem, and it would kill them all, but I wouldnt get credit for them.

Is so simply to do this quest, just kill Infested Root-Walker's and they will spawn, around 4 or 5 per kill

You don't get credit for them if your pet kills them either. So use some sort of AOE if you have it. One Volley takes them all out =P

if you are a shaman make sure you kill them by melee, i uesed magma totem and the kills didn't count !
maybe it's a bug in early stages of BC

As a paladin!

Kill the tree elementals first (Rotting Forest-Ragers or Infested Root-Walkers)
Save your HoJ for when he is trying to heal, then burst DPS trinket (Spelldamage of whatever you use) and get him below 20%, then Hammer of Wrath. The moment he dies, quickly pop out a Consecration, and all the mites will die instantly.

(And shamans, i know why it's bugged :) It is because it is the totem that kills them, not you. In pvp, my SCT lists the damage dealer when i take spell damage. And i get Magna Totem/fire totem when fighting a shaman. This is bugged, yes ^^ BUT YOU HAVE WINDFURY AND FROSTSHOCK!!!! YAAAAAH!)

the wood mites are 1lvl each and they spawn from the infested root walkers,arround 4-5 of each one,easily to kill with an aoe,as a 63 lvl warlock i finished in 10 min

If you are in a group with someone who has already completed this quest, the mites will not come out of the trees. We tested this a few times by joining and dropping group.

If the person who has completed this drops group, the mites start appearing; there is no need to abandon the quest and re-take it.

This happened on 6/6/07. This was the first time I have done this quest, so I'm not sure if it has always been this way, or if it started recently.

Found at 40, 48 The infested root-walkers drop 4-6 Theyre not that hard to kill and drop Junk items that sell for 11s each so its not bad to make some cash on the side:P lol gl

I know its a "noob" thing to do, but I think hunters have to be in melee range for the mites to spawn. They never spawned when I was at range.

Hunters have to get the killing blow (as opposed to their pets) in order for the mites to spawn, not be in melee range as previously stated by another posted.

Definitely true... a warlock must be in melle range and do the final blow, othrewise the Mites wont spawn. Killing is damn easy Hellfire x2 waves and the bugs die quick.

Incorrect on both counts. I was helping my fiance's priest with this quest with my 70 rogue...I completed the quest with him LONG ago. We were able to collect about 9 mites by killing 4-5 Rotting Forest-Ragers/Infested Root-Walkers when the spawn rate just BOTTOMED OUT....we killed approximately 10 mobs in a row with no mite spawns. I tried leaving the group and had her pull the mobs...still no spawns. So I rejoined the group and came here to check for any reported changes to the quest, and while I was alt+tabbed out, she pulled one that spawned mites.

Now, when I did this quest for my rogue and my shaman...both long since 70...I remember the mites spawning from pretty much every Root-Walker, etc. so Blizz may have stealth nerfed the spawn rate. Regardless, it's VERY hit and miss now.

Druids can use rank one hurricane as well, the very first hit kills them, and they don't attack, so you don't even have to put on bark skin. Pretty much any AOE will do the trick. I imagine arcane blast would kick much ass here :)

A very fast and mana-free way to kill the mites is to (for Wand users only though) Wand a mite and tab-select the next mite before the 1 second global cooldown is up and you will auto shoot the next mite as well. Rinse and repeat :)

The Infested Root Walkers can heal themselves without the use of mana, so be sure to watch for them to begin casting their healing spells and interrupt them in time.

Paladins beware: the termites do not attack you when they spawn, so retribution aura wont work.

However, consecreation finishes them off effectively.

Just did this on my Shaman and discovered that if you use a totem like Magma totem the kills DOES NOT COUNT!

Make sure you hit them with meele or spells.

As a demo lock, I just sent my felguard, dotted up and drained a bit. At 10% I did rain of fire over the body, when the mob dies the maggots die too.

I STRONGLY advise you to kill the big guys, they drop around 15 maggots, whereas the small ones drop 5-6 ^^

Tried a little experiment - got Infested Root-Walkers down to about 50% HP and then kited them into the Refugee Caravan where Vindicators helped finish them off. Tried this four times and the mites didn't appear.

Went away from the camp and the next five I took down dropped the mites.

Best thing to do as a hunter is just as the mob dies, lay an explosive trap or start casting volley, easy peasy =D the big guys spawned at least 10 mites for me, so best going for them - track elementals - boom, you're done ;)

This quest was such a beating.

The little guys that healed were the biggest problem. I'd have to drain every single point of mana, then keep hitting hoping I would crit right before they healed again.

I had a 70 Human Mage running me.

Keep in mind that YOU need the KILLING blow in order for Wood Mites to have a chance to spawn.

If your partner (who doesn't have the quest) kills the mites, they will never spawn.

Took me an hour to figure this out...doh >.<

Or you can just use Frost Nova, it kills them instantly as well.

Death Knights also work similar to Hunters, You need to get the final killing blow (as apose to youre goul if you have one) in order to spawn the mites, maybe save an instant attack (such as Icy Touch) to ensure this happens...

Once the mites are Spawned i found it very easy to just get close to one and use the 'Pestilence' spell, this will usually take out all of the mites for you nice and quickly :)

This was a bit annoying as a rogue with no AoE, to quickly get and run after get the mites .. running under the corpse! (but not impossible).

Others have said it many times in replies but it bears (even more) repeating: if your pet does all the work it does not count as your kill. No loot, no XP, no quest completion. Not sure how anyone got high enough level to do this quest without realizing this but it's true.

Pet in this sense is totems, shaman and mage elementals, shaman wolves, hunter pets, warlock demons, death knight ghouls, etc. The player must tag a mob or it simply doesn't count in any way but making the mob dead.

Tag means your character hurting it, however little. As an example: you're a level 67 enhancement shaman and run into a group of five quest mobs. You can use wolves, totems, and earth elemental as AoE. You will get zero credit for those kills unless you personally tag them. Can melee each in turn, shock, whatever. In this example, the best option will most likely be to cast a couple chain lightnings. The casts will tag everything then you get down to the business of actually killing the mobs. Same situation as a hunter with a gorilla pet, drop a quick volley or trap .

Yes, it's annoying, but there are good reasons for this mechanic. If pets broadly defined could give the character kills there are a zillion ways it could be abused. I'm looking at you, gold farmer hunters.

Anyone else have a problem where the mites evade a lot of your attacks? I can only kill 1-2 per batch.

As a 67 Belf DK, all I did was kill the mob and when the bugs dropped, I just hit blood boil and that took care of any spawns.

There may be better ways to kill the mites, but as a Blood Knight I just cast Consecration right after killing the Treant and it killed all of them instantly...really easy but mana expensive...

As a Warlock, do NOT use Hand of Gul'dan to finish off the Treants. It will cause the mites to bug and Evade your attacks.

It seems that the chance for the mites to spawn from the mobs has been increased to 100%

Any class that has a battle pet of any kind, you must put your pet on passive to get the mites to spawn.

• Accept the quest, The Infested Protectors, from Lakotae at coords 37.8, 51.6 (Refugee Caravan).
• Travel west to the area of coords 48, 57.
• Kill Rotting Forest-Rager and Infested Root-Walker to unleash Wood Mite from them.
• Kill 25 Wood Mite.
• Travel east, to the Refugee Caravan, at coords 37.8, 51.6.
• Turn in the quest to Lakotae.

The Infested Protectors

Lakotae wants you to kill 25 Wood Mites and then return to him at the Refugee Caravan. The mites can be found living inside the bodies of Rotting Forest-Ragers and Infested Root-Walkers.

Description

The trees of this land are ravaged by the power that was unleashed from Auchindoun. The foul magic that was unleashed blasted the land into the wastes you see all around. The trees that survived are now infested with wretched wood mites that crawl under their bark and gnaw at their flesh.

Rotting forest-ragers and infested root-walkers are breeding grounds for the mites. They are found along the edge of the wood to the east. Destroy these creatures and then kill the mites that flee their husks.
