you only have to block Power Stomp with your spear, you dont need to kill him and if you get out of the ring your progress is not reset.

just use the spear when Power Stomp has 0.6 sec left to cast.

What you see when you activate the ability is its channel, not a cast time. You must be actively channelling the ability when Athanos finishes his cast of Power Stomp. Click the ability immediately before Power Stomp finishes, as your block is instant cast and only lasts briefly.

When I first started this quest, I thought this quest was severely bugged. I spent a bit of time frustrated because I kept getting hit by the Power Stomp even though I had activated the Humility's Guard. It took a few minutes before I realized that the Humility's Guard spell is a channeled spell, and thus figuring out what I did wrong.

What this simply means you have to have Humility's guard channeling as he hits. Here's an example of what I mean:

THIS IS THE CORRECT WAY TO HANDLE THE STOMP

Power Stomp is casting
Cast Humility's Guard with 0.4 seconds or less remaining on the cast. You want Humility's Guard to be channeling WHILE the stomp hits.

I made the mistake of thinking you need to just press the action button and have the buff up before the low lands, like this example:

THIS ISN'T THE CORRECT WAY TO HANDLE THE STOMP

Power stomp is casting
Immediately casted Humility's Guard to pre-emptively have the buff on
The channel finishes before the stomp hits resulted in an unsucessful block.

So a slight TLDR on this; Make sure you are channeling the buff Humility's Guard AS THE POWER STOMP IS HITTING YOU, so basically cast it with 0.4-0.1 seconds remaining on the cast.

I hope this make sense and clears up the frustration for those who didn't finish it yet and are looking for a solution to do it without wasting so much time from constant misses.

Another poorly tested/designed quest from the overpaid employees at Blizzard/Activision

If you have a pet put it on passive, he has to be attacking you for it to work.

Basically don't even do anything other than initiate the fight and watch his cast bars. When he's almost done casting Power Stomp hit your Action Button for the spear. It will increment on the quest if you do it correctly (you need to do it 6 times).

There's no reason to fight him, no reason to dodge anything (if you do it correctly the spear will also heal you).

Once you've done it 6 times use your crystal on him to get the memory.

The dev clearly failed here. The channel is literally less than a second or around that at least. This would be world-first-class-raider tier if it was meant to be intuitive to understand at first.

As near as I can tell, my holy paladin could survive indefinitely against Athanos and make a small dent in his hp. (Like a lot of others, it took me a while to figure out when to press the extra button.) Has anyone actually attempted to kill him?

I also had a hard time at first. This is what worked for me.
Hit your extra-action button when the bar reaches the last "P" in Power StomP.

Was at 2/6 after 20+ attempts before I just said screw it and gave up. The item has a .5 second cast timer that HAS to be more than 1/3 of the way through the cast or it won't block the spell. I don't have the willpower to sit here and run back and forth for an hour just because one dev didn't want to add another half second to the cast timer so people with worse internet can still, y'know, enjoy one of their "covenant features" that were one of their main &*!@ing selling points.

If you can't capture his memory, check your bags and make sure you don't have two soul mirrors in your bags (like I did). There is no quest marker to capture his memory. I had to abandon and redo the quest because I forgot to capture him. These quests are so poorly designed it absolutely blows my mind.

Your Spear is a channeled shield that lasts 0.5 seconds.
Power Stomp has a 2.0 second cast time.
Make sure you wait until 75% through the Power Stomp cast bar to hit the Spear button, or the channel won't last long enough.

And, don't forget to use the soul mirror on the big afterwards.

Just did this at 70 on a pally. What finally made it easy to do (without relying on dumb luck to get it just right) was to stand with my back against of the pillars so as to not get knocked off. On my cast bar for enemies there's a timer. Use the ability when Power Stomp has less than 0.5 sec. Don't eyeball it; watch the timer. Got four casts back to back after having struggled with the first two.

This quest's title is a clear reference to the quote Thanos uses towards the Avengers in Avengers: Endgame after their HQ is destroyed.

A bit surprised no one else caught this. That was one of the most iconic quotes from him in the movie, coupled with the NPC's name "Athanos".

Description

Even with Humility's Guard in hand, if you are to convince Athanos to join the Path of Ascension once more then you must prove yourself a worthy adversary. Enter the ring and wield the spear against him. Even with its power you cannot hope to defeat him, but it should be able to parry his mighty stomp. Thwart his assault for long enough, and he will surely allow you to capture his memory.
