Plenty of helpful information at the Master of the Molten Flow achievement.

They hit reasonably hard, use slam and a punting skill.

They will occasionally grab a party member (or pet) and dunk them into the lava. They move slow, and not all of the Sentinels do this, but if they can, they will in the first 5-10 seconds of combat.

ok i have a possible theory...

i had the same hunter after trying a few, and decided to try each of the different npc's near lava and not near. when not near, i couldnt get them to do their special ability for achievement... when i was near lava, they did, although sometimes waited perhaps 1 minute or more...so it may well be possible that its not the fact 'some' do and 'some' dont cast the ability, but perhaps your positioning of being near lava or not that made the difference?

Take the sentinel for example, he says 'how would you like to go for a swim' when he picks you up. how can u go for a swim if your not near any lava to swim in?

when i got the hunter achieve, it was near lava, did NOT cast within the first 10 secs, nor even 20, but it did it about a total of 4 times after having adds fail me, and not running properly... (read on for my solving of failing to run properly :P)

i also believe (have not done proper tests yet) he throws the arrows/shadows appear where you have previously been, so running randomly wont help, run in a huge S shape WITHOUT going back on a previous path u run, and you should be ok.

ironically as a shaman you can have the sentinel pick up a threat totem, i.e healing stream. tested it out a few times and it works

Quite possibly the most annoying of the three to get, with the Barrage one right behind it.
My guild master and I spend about an hour trying to get these two for the achievement. We sat there planning it out, using roots and stuns and all types of fancy things.
Eventually, I suggested we just kill them as fast as possible, like we would for the dailiy, since we had seen both spells used on us within 9 kills. (or however many the daily says)
Within 10 minutes we both got what we came for.

I can say that once i get the Death From Above achievement, i will be doing the Spire daily from now on.

Even though the text says "while it is carrying a party member", that's not entirely true. I got this earlier by being in a party, tagging a sentinel, he charged someone not in my party who happened to be nearby and picked him up and starting carrying him off, then I killed the sentinel.

So, I guess it's kind of bugged right now. You have to a) be in a party and b) kill him while he's carrying someone off whether that someone is in your party or not.

If you have a priest in your group, use mind control on it first to see if it has the ability to pick up a party member. It'll save a lot of time because many of them don't have the ability. If it does, it will be a blacked out button with no icon (but it will look different than an empty button). It will be in slot 4. Best of luck!

Color doesn't matter.

Feral druids beware: Being grapped breaks your shapeshift and prevents it completely for the duration (bug?) .

Unless you're geared you're pretty screwed as you'll be stuck down there burning to near death. I had 2 or 3 things aggro'd on me and barely survived with a tip of health and saved myself popping all bear cd's.

As a feral your only solace is that you can still spam entangling roots and hope to not get tossed in lava...

Flamewalker Sentinels seem to be ridiculously buggy when it comes to picking up party members, either that or I had horribly horrible RNG. Had one attack a warlock in my party, and just sat there healing him....for 10 minutes. Did not get picked up once. For at least half an hour we pulled every color Sentinel that we could find and sat around, none of them ever picked up either of us.

After about two hours of !@#$ing around with Shadowfiend I finally got lucky and it picked up my shadowfiend a little bit after I cast it.

Mages can solo this. Just wait until he picks you up then Ice Block it. You'll be in his arms still, but will be able to cast.

just found out the funny way to solo the Sentinel part for this achievement.
1. Mind control a random mob, aggro the sentinel use the mc'd mob.
2. the sentinel will sure grab the mc'd mob if it has the grab ability. Then you break mc channeling and the 2 mob will be hugging each other in a very weird position.
3. Kill the sentinel and profit :D

PS. I suppose using shadowfiend and fade will do the trick too, but timing would be tricky.

Ok..this has to be the funniest...and I know I'm being over-pleased with myself for this one...

I'm a rogue, so generally, no minion of any sort with me....so...I was down there messing around trying to get achievement. I had one pick me up and carry me, and my hemorrage and poisons killed him; but no credit. Soooo..and don't ask me why I was still carrying this...I noticed I still had a Thornling Seed from Dire Maul in my bag...so..thought..what the heck..I'll try it...

I attacked a sentinel, DPS-ed him down a bit...then dropped the seed...figuring the sentinel or other mob would just one -shot it and game over....but to my joyous surprise, the sentinel almost immediately picked it up and carried it off to the lava! I then finished him off and presto! achievement accomplished!

For what that is worth...it worked for me!

Just did this and went through about 10 red/orange ones before i got a yellow. He picked me up right away and we couldn't burn him down in time. Tried 3-4 more reds then a yellow spawned and we got him and credit. So yellows seem to be the trick. Also i fought all of them near lava.

I got Masters of Molten Flow by popping Mirror Image and he picked up one of the mirror images and i finished him off for achievement.

The following pertains to the achievement Master of the Molten Flow

As a rogue, not grouped, I did this with the Commander's Badge that I obtained from Netherwing Rep/Questing.

I assume, from this and from other comments, that most trinket combat companions will help a solo person get this part of the achievement.

Strategy I Used:
1) I DPSd the sentinel to fairly low HP at which point I activated the companion trinket.
2) I made sure to be get farther from the flamewalker than the companion.
3) Also, to test if this is available to non-aggro drop classes, I didn't Vanish.

Can you get the achievement credit for killing the sentinel while he is carrying you? I am having a hard time doing this solo with my paladin. My hunter got it while the sentinel was carrying her pet; my shaman while the sentinel was carrying her totem; my DK while the sentinel was carrying her ghoul. Has anyone gotten this achievement credit for killing the sentinel with a pally solo?

For anyone stuck trying to do this solo I managed to get it while completing the Need...Water...Badly quest, while he's jumping between platforms a Sentinel began attacking him and then picked him up when I killed it the achievement popped so it works for quest npcs also.

The achievement related to this mob can no longer be completed with a hunter pet, i tried it just today, killing the sentinel with your pet while you are being carried, and killing the sentinel yourself while your pet is being carried, neither result in credit :/.

EDIT: this achievement is in fact, just bugged as of 5.1, tried it with a few real party members, and still noone gets credit.

Rather funny was killing this guy the moment he grabbed me resulting in my toon being rooted to his corpse for almost a minute. It even appeared that I was still in his hand as he was sprawled out on the ground...

I can confirm that this can be completed solo. I'm a lvl 90 ret paladin, I hit the Flamewaker Sentinel once and took most of his HP down with a few dots still ticking, I then focused on a Flamewaker Hunter and the Sentinel ran over, picked me up and carried me into the lava with him, my dots finished him off and I got credit for the achievement!

FWIW, I was reading this thread when a Sentinel picked me up. Used Fan of Knives, it died, and I got the achievement.

You CAN get down there if you did the other side quests. Let yourself die to the nearest flames near the hole/platform. While dead you will be able to fall through the platform, so walk to edge and go through/jump. As soon as you start falling rez. If you don't have a slow fall ability you'll die again but this time just fall to the bottom.

I know the key for it to use that damn carry ability. You need to pull also hunter and shaman. When i did that he used carry almost immediately.

If you have Vanquished Tentacle of C'Thun and/or Vanquished Clutches of Yogg-Saron you'll be able to get this fairly easy as a solo class simply because of the short CD on both trinkets.

They must have changed it because as soon as I activated Vanquished Tentacle of C'Thun I was picked up and after he walked with me into the lava I melee'd him to death and got the achievement criteria.

You of course need to hurt the Sentinel a bit to get aggro and keep it from killing your tentacles.

Threw a Frost Grenade as a lvl 100 (you need to damage it before it will pick you up, aggro isn't enough), hugged it, it picked me up and I could attack it just as it threw me into the lava and got credit for the achiev.

The Flamewaker Sentinels/Shamans/Hunters are on the level below the Ashen Fields-Molten Front and the only way you can access that level is by choosing Into the Fire that day.
