This entire encounter is a reference to the competitive 'sport' of robot combat, made most famous by the likes of Battle Bots and Robot Wars. Though the TV series that showcase the sport had their best runs in the early 2000s, small-scale non-televised events are still regularly held particularly in the US and UK, where the sport has its biggest followings.

Gnomercy 4.U. is inspired by a pneumatic flipper design, similar to Chaos 2, Panic Attack or Bronco. This fundamental design has been successful right across the history of the sport and is a natural fit for this kind of 'robot combat arena' theme.

Meanwhile The Platinum Pummeler is a more generic humanoid robot design similar to those seen across Mechagon Isle. Typically this kind of design has performed very poorly in actual robot combat (being needlessly complex to program with little payoff, easy to immobilise and lacking effective weaponry), but what the hell, it's a videogame :P

In addition much of the arena design seems to be directly lifted from the Robot Wars and Battle Bots arenas, from the hazard-tape decor right down to the spinning screw, sawblade and hammer hazards arranged around the arena.

Really stoked to see this setting being made into an encounter in WoW! It's a very cool theme for a boss fight.

This fight is brutal on your framerate. I moved all my graphics settings to minimum and was still getting 2-3 fps.

To defeat him you have to hit him with the hammers on the sides of the ring so that his armor is gone.

Don't forget to collect your treasures after getting pulled down the chute! I didn't see the chest beside me and had made it halfway down to the next boss when I saw a red X on my mini-map, so i had to slog back up to where I had landed.

Gnomercy 4.U. will target random players with its abilities.
The Tussel Tonks Arena is threatening to players and Tonks alike!
- Tanks –
  Bring the Platinum Pummeler within range of [Piston Smashers] to remove stacks of [Platinum Plating]
  Avoid facing The Platinum Pummeler towards your allies so they're not hit by [Whirling Edge]
- Healers –
  Avoid traps within the Tussle Tonks Arena, such as [Buzz Saws]
  Tanks will take heavy damage from the Platinum Pummeler while leading it to [Piston Smashers]
- Damage Dealers –
  Focus on taking out Gnomercy 4.U. while your tank weakens the Platinum Pummeler.
  Avoid traps within the Tussle Tonks Arena, such as [Buzz Saws]
The Platinum Pummeler
- Platinum Plating – Thick plates of platinum armor reduce all damage taken by 33%. This effect stacks.
  Platinum Plating is vulnerable to Piston Smashers.
- Whirling Edge – Inflicts 659515 Physical damage to enemies within 8 yards of the bot.
- Lay Mine – The bot lays down a mine that explodes on contact, inflicting 35 Physical damage and knocking back nearby players.
Gnomercy 4.U.
- Foe Flipper – The caster charges to a random opponent's location, then launches all enemies within 6 yards into the air.
- Vent Jets – Vents around the bot unleash gouts of flame, slowing the bot's movement speed by 60% and inflicting 494636 Fire damage to enemies within 9 yards of the bot's front, and 98927 Fire damage to all enemies every 1 sec for 8 sec.
- Maximum Thrust – The bot charges in the direction of a random enemy, inflicting 25 Physical damage and knocking back all enemies in it's path.
  When the bot impacts with the arena wall it is stunned for 10 sec.

The Tussle Tonks Arena

Piston Smasher – Massive hydraulic hammers inflict 495019 Physical damage and stunning any players or creatures that come within 3.75 yards.
The Piston Smasher becomes inactive after coming into contact with the Platinum Pummeler.
Buzz Saw – Spinning buzz saws rip and tear at any target within 2 yards, inflicting 98927 Physical damage and knocking them back.
