This part in particular is a bit disingenuous, and stating interpretation as fact. This doesn't really imply that there is anything with free will to do with the night elven dark rangers at all. In fact, throughout BfA, we've seen that the Val'kyr explicitly raise free willed undead, both with these night elves, and with Derek. If they could raise forsaken bound to their will, there would not be any need for Sylvanas to have to condition Derek. We've had the reasons for the night elves joining the forsaken explained fairly well, both in the introduction questlines and in the warfront itself. Focusing on the recent revamp on Uther's tomb and the interaction with the Lich King, i'm pretty sure they're focusing in bring Kel'thuzad back and now you ask: Why him?

Kel'thuzad in the events of Warcraft III has proved to be able to materialize to a single specific being and communicate in the form of a spirit like any other loa. I'm pretty sure the one who whispered Vol'jin was him and now my guesses are:

1. Kel'thuzad have allied with wither an random Old God in order to achiev a goal or Sargeras himself, but i can't think of anything.

2. Either this is a long plot to bring Lich King back. Since Legion the heroes are twisting with the bonds of life and death, Val'kyr bringing people back from the certain death, killing Helya and now the possible fall of the Loa of the Dead himself.

But why now? Simple. The contents of the Book of Medivh are still a mystery in the plot but 2 people have stolen it's knowledge and it was Kel'thuzad and Ner'zhul(Lich King), the same book who was used to open portals between Azeroth and Draenor which full capabilities are still unkown. A perfect opportunity to open a path between the world of the living and the world of the dead. The last trigger they're probably seeking is the death of Sylvanas, by making her Warchief is the perfect chance to get her out of their path.

However, lost souls of heros may also benefit from this situation, making a perfect chance to Uther, who felt the presence of the lich plotting to prevent Vol'jin from being sent to the realm of the dead to serve as a messenger to warn the heroes of Azeroth of the return of the Lord of the Dead.Comment by AlakeiThancanI created a theory based on the recent changes and BoD plot.

I think Death in WoW is neither Light nor Shadow, but rather both. Where there are creatures of shadow, there must be light. So: Who controls the light side of Death? The Void told Aleria to kill Sylvanas because their FEAR her. The undeath is immune to the Old God's whispers, which is heavily hinted in the whole Wotlk xpac, where Yogg'saron was openly trying to manipulate the Lich King but not very effective as it seems and in one of the chronicles it says that N'zoth is afraid of sylvanas because he cannot whisper and corrupt her.

Did no1 srsly consider the fact that Azeroth herself might be behind all the major events from appointing Sylvie to Warchief and "divine" touching Vol'jin? A being of Azeroth's magnitude certainly knew that using the 5 pillars of creation to shut the portal in Tomb of sargeras down, would release Nzoth from his prison. That would mean that every race living on the planet would be susceptible to the whispers. Who would be better equipped to lead the armies against N'zoth than some1 who controls undeath? I m not arguing that Sylv's actions as warchief are honorable or correct, but i m saying that there is a pattern here. She didnt want the alliance to have any port in the kalimdor to unload azerite so she planned on conquering Darnassus and cleverly lured malfurion into an open battle only to test Saurfangs loyalty to her. When he failed to deliver the killing blow to Malfurion Sylvie knew that taking the city would cost many lives so it was better for her to burn the city than capture it. The goal is achieved either way. I believe Sylvanas has been approached by Azeroth in visions or dreams and made aware that the entire planet except from herself and her forsaken are alrdy being corrupted by N'zoth (even magni is hinted to have been made a pawn based on Ilgynoth's whisper : "THE KING OF DIAMONDS HAS BEEN MADE A PAWN"), so Sylvanas is to single handendly prepare the world for war against the Void, while having to fight a war against alliance and possibly horde characters who might alrdy be corrupted by N'zoth.

Also with Bolvar being hinter to return in BFA ( totally my speculation) , i see Sylvanas either killing him or taking his place to become the Lich Queen, becoming the ultimate weapon against N'zoth ultimately sacrificing herself to defeat him or just retiring to Icecrown to be the Jailor of the damned so she can be removed from the Horde.Comment by YraylI've wondered since we learned the Odyn story in Legion what exactly he saw in the Shadowlands that gave him the knowledge for the Val'kyr. I can't help but wonder if it's not so much a what as a who. We do, in fact, know of a very powerful being that has been trapped there for a very long time: Hakkar.

Since the first time the trolls discovered him he has been using the blood and souls of the living to strengthen himself with the goal of escaping the Shadowlands. What if he's the one who helped Odyn figure out how to make the first Val'kyr (definitely not a benevolent action), and through them has been manipulating the locations of souls, consuming them, but also trying to figure out through trial and error how to get himself out of the realm of the dead...Val'kyr are the only ones who can truly cross over at will. Everything else needs some kind of help.

What if he's the one who is Bwonsamdi's "boss"? What if all of those souls flying through the skies of Nazmir are going straight to him?

What if he is the one who whispered in Vol'jin's ear about Sylvanas? Why would he do that? Why too, would both Helya and the Val'kyr of the Lich King help Sylvanas? If Hakkar was responsible for the beings who can cross between his prison and the mortal world, and then directs them to help Sylvanas (who's experience in the Shadowlands may not have been...legit)...well, can only speculate. But this all does fit with his pattern.

Furthermore, since no one knows where he came from, and he was already trapped in the Shadowlands when the trolls first encountered him, who's to say he's not an old god who happened to have been defeated before the titans came to take notice? The Original Blood God.Comment by XexjiI think all this is underestimating just how damned stubborn and uncontrollable Sylvanas is. Before she was Warchief, she certainly did listen to orders from other members of the Horde, but they were limited to general direction and interactions with other Horde races. How she treated her enemies and how she achieved her goals was completely up to her.

I personally don't think she's being manipulating by a higher malevolent force, and even if she was I believe Sylvanas would turn the entire Horde war machine around to slaughter whatever threatened her. Now note I said malevolent- Vol'jin (the only one who experienced those whispers at the start of Legion) has never confirmed that the force/being is different than the one that brought him back as a Loa (which honestly is what he obviously is now)- Only Eyir said that they probably weren't the same, stating that "Such a noble force does not scheme for mortal thrones," without actually confirming whether they are different. However, why SHOULDN'T such a noble force scheme for the mortal throne of one of the world's only two great superpowers? Ensuring that half of the world's active power is lead by someone you prefer. would be a great idea. Plus, Vol'jin's uncertainty on the matter neither confirms nor denies if both forces were or were not the same being.

Ultimately, I'm pretty sure what this is all pointing to is Azeroth herself choosing Sylvanas for Warchief, believing her to be:
1. The strongest choice against the Legion. Not something we can confirm, but considering we beat the Legion it certainly didn't hurt.
2. The strongest choice against the Old Gods. No other Horde leaders would be driven or ruthless or caring enough to eradicate the Old God corruption from the world (for their own protection mind you) than Sylvanas. This is in addition to undead resisting Old God whispers and the Void, whispering in Alleria's ear, being terrified of Sylvanas.
3. More of adaptive planning, but the argument could be made that the BEST way to ensure every last drop of Azerite is collected instead of falling into the hands (tentacles?) of the Old Gods is through allowing a war over the substance, thus ensuring both factions go to every length possible to wrest the titan's blood from all sorts of nooks, crannies, and dark forces.Comment by MightylorddkYou know blizzard made a good story when even Nobell fails to explain it in 30 mins.Comment by BraxusOmegaMy thoughts are on Azeroth being the grand conspirator.

As we know Azeroth is dying, and healing thus far has been almost nil. Using the Heart of Azeroth we have managed to keep her stabilized but still she is still dying. Now, dying alone is big thing as the planet goes with her but this also works against the old gods working to corrupt her. Taking the whispers into account they hint at Magni being led by the old gods, we were allowed to have the HoA to keep her alive as they work. During this time they also haven't made any serious attempts at trying to gain the heart (yet) so for us to have it doesn't hinder their plans thus far as either the HoA isn't a threat to them or they already have plans to acquire later.

This keeps Azeroth in a near-death state, a state where it would be possible for her to partially step into the shadow lands. In this way she splits herself from her physical, comatose form and her conscious. In this place she could then work against the old gods and still keep her actions hidden. She also is the boss that Bwonsamdi speaks of and why the loss of a soul is so bad as it could carry back the knowledge of her acting within the shadow lands.

Now the big question is what role Sylvanas plays in the great scheme of things. If we consider N'Zoth as the one who whispered for Sylvanas to be named warchief then her role seems to be the bringer of chaos, to throw the balance into discord and draw the attention of the races away from their actions. Azeroth becomes aware of this and thus elevates Vol'jin to his current state to play a stabilizing force for the horde later on. As Sylvanas continues her actions forces slowly gather against her as the old gods wish it, buying time for their corruption to work.

This is where Azeroth may have plans that the old gods haven't considered.

The way things are progressing Sylvanas seems to be setting up as the big bad as intended. Seeing as her defeat would remove a great threat from the undead to them they push her onwards to her next death. This is what Azeroth is waiting for. As we know the Void Lords are unable to step into our reality and thus the old gods are sent in their place. On the contrary, Titans may not be able to step into the void or at least, not without demerits. Like-wise their constructs are also vulnerable to the old gods corruptions so they are unable to battle the Void Lords that way.

But what about the undead? Sylvanas may very well be setup to mirror Kerrigan in SC2.
