I'm confused by her being able to raise the dead like she did. Why does she care about preserving her people and how they can't reproduce when she's able to just raise a corpse after the flight hits it? Blizzard seems to be mixing some stuff up by adding new abilities to old heroes.
I still have hope for Sylvanus. The shorthand for distinguishing between comedy and tragedy is that comedies end in a marriage while tragedies end in death, often lots of death. I would suggest that the real distinction is one of reconciliation. In tragedies a major character either fails or refuses to be reconciled to those around him or her. In comedies that reconciliation happens. I think that it is possible for Vareese to reconcile Alleria and Sylvanus, a reconciliation that does not change any sister's nature but rather mitigates the worst impulses of each. A reconciliation that mitigates the terrible forces of The Void in Alleria and the ghastly pull of death on Sylvanus. Sylvanus has never had very good judgement in men from Varimanthus to Nathanos Blightcaller. She needs her sisters nearby. Finally, let me say that I am more than tired of having the War Chief of The Horde as the villain of an expansion. I think that Anduin has within him the power to be a great leader and a friend to The Horde under honorable leadership. Jaina Proudmore and Genn Greymane have the potential to be great villains. Perhaps Jaina could come to understand that her real enemies were Garrosh and Gallywix (wouldn't that be fun to have the Trade Prince as a major character!) and leave Genn emerge as the ultimate villain of this expansion. Perhaps.
Nice reading, thank you for this article :)
I thought the exact same thing with the Lich King vs. The Void. We always knew the love triangle of the Burning Legion, Void, and Titans. The Titans were all about ordering planets, while the Burning Legion sacrificed and turned souls into fuel. The Scourge is often not talked about, but the Lich King always seemed to appreciate the unliving, preserving their souls but disfiguring their bodies. One counterargument is that Sylvanas burned Teldrassil and its denizens, denying the Night Elves of a physical body to inhabit. But we know the Night Elves are capable of turning into wisps upon death. In https://wow.gamepedia.com/Quest:Coaxing_the_Spirits we learn that Night Elves need to have their spirits pushed out, and what better way to do that than burning the corpses.
Interesting, but, and if all Sylvanas' action wasn't her own actions? but the Lich King actions? I mean, the same way Arthas was manipulated by Ner'zhul, is it possible that Sylvanas is being manipulated too?Sorry for my bad english.
I'm calling it right now. The Void wins. Genn kills Sylvanas (this may be where Anduin lies 1-3 times). As she dies her 3rd undead death, the voidlords are "ushered in" because with undeath's champion gone, their main threat has been neutralized. They fight the Lich King and his forces, and win. The Light is devastated and resurrects Sylvanas and any other lost Forsaken in order to fight the Void in the next expansion.
i'm not suprised she's evil.
Also don't forget the part in "Before the Storm" about her telling Horde leaders that the retreat at the Broken Shore was Vol'jin's command even though no one heard it.
Parallels to Arthas? rather all the final expansion of Legion until the Pre-patch is a parallel between WotLK events and the cataclysm more.Why?...simple:-since we entered Antorus we see an ICC on fire Reason? Varies:-the penultimate Boss shows the element of this place. (Agrammar of fire and Sindragrossa of ice)-we have a final boss who kills us permanently without any escape to the same as the Lich King (he killed you at 10% of his life, the other Argus 40%).-from the pre-patch we saw a very special aspect, our stats are the same when we had Lvl 80.-places have changed like Teldrassil and Tirisfal (in Cataclysm was almost all Eastern kingdoms and Kalimdor.)-New Race, although they are allied races.-after a union against a single enemy(The Burning legion), now again faces both factions again for a mere purpose.-a new fight against the old gods.and for last, maybe the death of Undead Silvanas do not talk about it, "At the hour of her third death, she will usher in our coming." Il'gynoth he did not want to refer to Lordaeron, hence he mentioned it as "she":-first destruction in second war for the horde orc (Warcraft 2:Tides of Darkness).-Second destruction in third war for the Scourge (Warcaft 3: Reign of Chaos).Ignore the siege of undercity that was caused by Varimathras although they attacked the city, almost nothing happened, it was only to free and pay for the traitor that caused in the Wrath Gate.- And now the tru Siege of Lordaeron, that it was definitely the destruction of this city, and from what it is seen there is no reparation or conquest for any of the factions, for which it is totally in ruins.so do not think it is a "copy and paste" of writers, I only see that it is one more point that history once again rewrites and rediscover the greatest events that Azeroth lived.Or in another case same case of Illidan, "THE RETURN OF ARTHAS".
It’s refreshing to see some respectful disagreements and discussions going on instead of the bickering that seems so prevalent lately. 🙂 We May play different factions, but we’re all gamers. We’re all at Blizzard’s mercy.
It will be wonderful when we finally rip Sylvanas' rotten skull from her shoulders and have a worthy war chief.
I would like to add one thing for sylvanas. love her or hate her, or love her but be worried about her current direction...she is smart. I say this as a neutral player with a main on both sides (both elves, always a fan of elves lol). I personally was amazed at her brilliance in this final week's event. Assuming blizzard is planning on keeping her this way...she is by far the most intelligent faction leader out there. Again, not talking about her actions being good, just her implementation of her goals. Even from the very start, the first thing the horde side of the quest does is evacuate civilians. On the Alliance side, the evacuation didn't take place until after the tree was on fire. Worse still, right before the tree was lit up Tyrande tells the alliance player character to go ahead to the tree to make sure the occupation isn't too bad. Isn't too bad? She was okay with leaving her people in the city? The horde was advancing on their city and they didn't bother worrying about their civilians? Perhaps they were so sure they would win the defense...but that was a hell of a risk to take, a risk that did not pay off. Sylvanas may have done the horrid act and deserves pretty much all of the blame, but I'm more than willing to place a little on Tyrande as well. Of course, if it's anything we learned from the Argus epilogue, it's that both Tyrande and Malfurion are just flat out terrible people. The night elves deserve better. But I digress. My point, the first thing Sylvanas did when the alliance came was evacuate their innocents. Smart. Then we have the battle itself. The alliance is winning. They have their siege engines and they're ripping a hole in their walls. Sylvanas unleashes a piece of horde azerite-technology, but it ultimately fails. Sure, we have the blight thing happen next, but I'm not counting that as part of her brilliance since that's just basically a chemical weapon thing. Not going to say anything good about that. It would've been a win for Sylvanas right there, but then we have backup show up. Out of nowhere, Jaina Ex Machina. Followed up later on by her sister and the Ren'dorei (side note, my alliance main has been race changed to one of them, so it was just fun to see "my people" show up. Need more allied race representation!) Sylvanas was outnumbered before, but now it's basically hopeless...and she's fine. Clearly she hoped to win with the blight, but it almost seemed like winning was her Plan B. She lures them into her throneroom, pulls the whole "lazy villian slouched on the throne" trope (which, I'll admit, I've always liked no matter how cheesy it can be :D) blah blah blah you all know the rest. The end result...Undercity has fallen...on her terms, by her decision, in what was clearly her Plan A. That, for me, was huge. She managed to turn the loss of a horde city capital to a win! That's *insane*, think about it. Her city is gone, but she lost far less than the alliance did. Every single step of this three week prepatch event was to her favor. Whether she's gone evil or has a good reason for all of this....none of that takes away from the fact she can think circles around every other leader on either faction. As her motives...well I know no beta spoilers...but right now...I can't really blame her. Note, I still don't support her actions...but I can't blame her motives. In her position...she seems right. Life has failed. Undeath is looking to be the next step in Azeroth's evolution. It's superior in most ways, minus the reproduction aspect. No wonder she values the valkyr so much, it was the only thing they were missing. And we know she's not all out for herself only. We saw that in the comic involving the Windrunners. Alleria distrustful of Sylvanas for being a corpse, Sylvanas distrusting Alleria for being void-infested. I thought that was a fun bit for the authors to add. But it does settle the fact that Sylvanas has no love for the void, she doesn't see the old gods or void lords as a potential ally. They are her enemy, in the same vein that the void is seen as the enemy of all life. Kind of fits the whole thinking that undeath is the way of the future. Who else can stand against the void? The light? That's not a viable strategy, we've seen since TBC that the naruu's lifecycles involve both light and void, it's just their nature to keep this war going back and forth (personally, don't trust them at all). Again, doesn't make her actions right, but (to me, at least) it does paint her motives in a different light. I wonder if it will continue this way. I'm not much of a roleplayer, but I can say from an attempted roleplaying view point...my blood elf is torn between satisfaction with the current outcomes of these battles while concerned about the future. Where is she going with this? Whereas my void elf is equal parts angry at sylvanas for the attack, and angry at the alliance for not having a dependable racial leader that could match her action for action. Seriously, the alliance have no real hope if our current leaders are the best we've got lol. Please give my void elf someone to look up to!
