Never understood why some items for quick rep turn ins had “Maw Lore” written on them but really nothing else.A shame they didn’t keep these in the game.
I recall there was a lore item about a remnant of what could have been here before The Maw was formed. Something went wrong and that made The Maw or it was a leftover of a whole afterlife that was swallowed up by The Maw.
Funny that they took the effort to expunge the flavor text instead of just a rewrite and then there is the horrible lack of coherent spelling or grammar in what is left. You'd think there was no QC for the actual text and those who wrote it didn't actually understand the basics of the English language or know how to use spell-check on the text fields. Then there is the modified naming and identification system used for this expac that has kyboshed most tracking apps or websites including this one.Something smells and it isn'r a certain Devs socks this time.
It's possible they may have decided to hold some of these back for later revelations- like for example that there are multiple Maw Walkers. Rather than go back and rewrite the ones that tell too much they just deactivated them all until 9.2 or so when it's after that particular shoe has dropped. Then again they may have changed their minds about the story and went with, "only one Maw Walker, and that's super-special."
Jeez, night elves just can't catch a break huh...
I always thought it was weird when I loot a Maw Lore item and it literally provides... no lore at all. Every time I loot one I check if the item is readable or expect Venari to provide some explanation but nothing and I am just standing there puzzled. I feel like this is indeed a bug, precisely because all of the Maw Lore items are unreadable. Why call them LORE items otherwise?
It seems that quite a few people think there is a big tonal shift from gnomish tavern jigs to rewatching the destruction of your home, and to an extent there is, but forcing people to listen to the same song over and over is a legitimate form of torture.Quite a shame that this can't be found in game, because I have been wondering since Shadowlands launched what Sylvanas saw that made her so afraid of true death the first time she died. I'm guessing Blizzard doesn't give a *!@# about that part of her lore anymore, but if it's still canon and if it still matters, then the Maw is super underwhelming.Like yeah, eternal torture and all that. Scary. But literally no different from something the Burning Legion might do to someone. In fact, that was literally Kil'jaeden's plan for Ner'zhul if he didn't accept the role of Lich King. I like the Shadowlands, but the Maw is a big disappointment.
There are still ~2 years to go with this expansion. The story will continue and fill itself.
There is also the little questions on what lore that is that is contradictory to what we were told, ie all souls go here from all reality.Oh really?Where do the bugs and devourers come from then?Where do the ethereal traders come from or go, or are they soulless merchants and it doesn't bother them. There are four lands and four lords yet the hub is built with eight gates.Someone built this whole mess to harvest anima from souls at some point in time so souls went somewhere else before bastion.Where did the builders come from and where did they go?Why are all the spirits we see only of beings that we have encountered up till now and nothing more exotic or just different slightly different?Come to think of it I haven't seen any saurian souls and I can confidently bet people can list other non-player races that are missing.
I would imagine partially rating for younger players (that note escalated a bit for the "T" rating on WoW), and not to have us dwell to much on Sylvanas in case she is "redeemed" - both played a part. Can't have a mass murderer's victims suffering out there reminding us every time you find a piece of lore.
I mean, we all knew the people in the Maw were bad people, but at least even they had the sense to step down from gnomish tavern jigs and go with the more reasonable "Burning Of Teldrassil" loop.
I doubt this was removed because it was too dark. I've seen crazier text in this game. Scholomance was pretty dark back in the day, if I remember. My question is: was ALL of the 'Maw Lore' finished or just certain parts of it? If it wasn't, it could be that they simply didn't have time to complete all the side text and decided to scrap it instead of include partial pieces. If it was finished and it was scrapped, it is possible that they are saving it for the patch (they did mention that there will be more in the Maw, didn't they?). Either way, I would be surprised if it was a 'creative direction' decision, since there are glaring contrasting creative choices left in the game... but I guess anything is possible! Maybe they decided it was time to ease up on the Teldrassil thing, since a lot of fans had strong feels over it.
