A new official Diablo book called "Diablo: Book of Lorath" has been
listed on Amazon
and other websites. The book releases on April 18 next year and is the second upcoming Diablo book after
"Diablo: Tales from the Horadric Library"
, a collection of short stories with a planned release on October 18 this year.
The release of "Book of Lorath" could become a big deal for the Diablo franchise. Blizzard Entertainment is known for publishing books close to major game releases - for reference, "Book of Cain" was released on December 13, 2011, and Diablo III's release followed on May 15, 2012. Diablo III's first and only expansion, Reaper of Souls, was published on March 25, 2014, while "Book of Tyrael", the second Diablo III book, was released on October 1, 2013.
Looking at these past releases, the time between Diablo book and game release dates averages five to six months, so Diablo IV fans could expect a release date somewhere between September and October next year. However, this time frame directly contradicts statements made during
Microsoft's Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase
which happened in June earlier this year, indicating a June 2023 release at the latest:
Everything in today’s Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase is targeted to launch in the next 12 months.
Lore-wise, the upcoming book is going to tell the story of Lorath Nahr, one of the last Horadrim, and his journey through Sanctuary, written by fantasy author
Matthew J. Kirby
:
Amid the restless evil of Sanctuary, only the Horadrim—an ancient order of heroes and scholars—wield the knowledge needed to light the way for humanity. In the Book of Lorath, join Lorath Nahr, one of the last of the dwindling Horadrim, on a journey through Sanctuary’s most powerful relics and the stories behind them. It is Lorath’s hope that this volume will preserve his knowledge for all time . . . and pass it down to those who will inherit the fight against the Prime Evils.
Direct from the Diablo® development team and award-winning author Matthew J. Kirby, this immersive, must-have compendium with all-new illustrations showcases the artifacts that have often been—and might yet be—the key to tipping the fate of the world
.

"Targeted" has pretty much become a term devoid of meaning, these days.
Blizzard Entertainment is known for publishing books close to major game releases - for reference, "Book of Cain" was released on December 13, 2011, and Diablo III's release followed on May 15, 2012. Not to appear impatient, but I'm not sure if I share the interpretation of "close to". Six months 'give or take' is pretty much the time span of a year, which is not very insightful at all when we already know the game is "targeted" (... ...) to release in 2023.
