Diablo 4 Game Director, Blizzard Lead Level Designer, and WoW Designer Let Go From Blizzard Entertainment
2021/08/11 at 4:28 PM
We have several more high-profile Blizzard Entertainment departures this week, with Diablo 4 game director Luis Barriga, Blizzard lead level designer Jesse McCree, and World of Warcraft designer Jonathan LeCraft let go from the company.
This news was first
broken by Kotaku
, who wrote the following:
Diablo 4 game director Luis Barriga, Blizzard lead level designer Jesse McCree, and World of Warcraft designer Jonathan LeCraft were let go from Blizzard on Wednesday, two sources with knowledge of the move told Kotaku.
: a spokesperson for Activision Blizzard confirmed the departures in an email. “We can confirm Luis Barriga, Jesse McCree, and Jonathan LeCraft are no longer with the company,” they wrote.
“We have a deep, talented roster of developers already in place and new leaders have been assigned where appropriate. We are confident in our ability to continue progress, deliver amazing experiences to our players, and move forward to ensure a safe, productive work environment for all.”
No reason was given for their sudden departures, but they come at a time of intense scrutiny for the company reckoning with the lawsuit, as
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick stated last week
In addition, we’ll continue to investigate each and every claim and complaint that we receive. When we learn of shortcomings, we will take decisive action. And to strengthen our capabilities in this area, we’ll be adding additional staff and resources. People will be held accountable for their actions. That commitment means we’ll not just terminate employees where appropriate, but we’ll also terminate any management or leader found to have impeded the integrity of our processes for evaluating claims and imposing appropriate consequences.
Several, but not all, of the former employees were identified in the
Cosby Suite photographs
, with Jesse McCree specifically making an inappropriate joke in a screenshotted Facebook conversation. Another employee in the photos, Cory Stockton, remains at the company but has recently been put on leave:
Two sources confirmed to Kotaku that Stockton was put on leave last week but appears to remain with the company.
Recently the Warcraft team removed
in-game references to Alex Afrasiabi
, former Senior Creative Director for World of Warcraft. It remains to be seen if references to other Blizzard Entertainment employees let go will be removed. For example, Jesse McCree is the namesake for both the popular Overwatch hero and Legion zone Mac'Aree.
