I don't really agree with the OP. The real problem here is your forgetfulness for losing the authenticator and ipod in the first place. I don't know anyone who goes "Gee. I shouldn't get a new cell phone because I might lose it and have to buy a new one." I just don't understand how people lose so much stuff. Sure, when I was a kid I would forget things like my wallet on vacation but not as an adult. You should have already learned by now how to keep your valuables safe.
My iPhone / authenticator is with me always. I will disassociate it from my account for the day next week that I upgrade my phone and download the latest authenticator version, but will reactivate it when I am done. I also make sure to have a backup of my iphone on dvd, as well as record my autheticator serial number.Having good security on your pc is good. Having good security on your pc and an authenticator is better.
I actually have a 16g iTouch an use the Authenticator on that. I love it, and that +my antivirus +firefox +noscript, I'm pretty sure my account is safe. That doesn't mean I go around clicking obvious keyloggers, but it's nice to have the piece of mind.
This post was from a user who has deleted their account.
I have bad luck on trying to keep stuff, and i mean Bad Luck with capitals B and L.So therefore i rely on my super-duper-10+words-passwords.4 years and no hacking problems (also been double carefull on places i visit). My 2 brothers got hacked, TWICE, and i am a hack-virgin ^^
I wouldn't want to miss my authenticator.Does anyone know whether I can bind two authenticators to one account? Then I'll get a backup one, and leave it in my desk at home.
I'd get one but I'm doing raf with a friend and he likes to put me on follow sometimes. I know that's a pretty big potential security risk, but meh. The rewards outweigh it I guess.
The day you get hacked you will say to yourself "damn, I wish I had gotten one of those free mobile authenticators", until then just keep saying they are useless and a pain in the neck, do as you please! ;)Anyway the mobile one is java, for the Nokia N series you can get it working on any model that is similar to yours (I got N78) even if it's not officially supported, just get the .java installer and manually send it over to the phone to install it. I had to do that at least when I first got mine, but hey at least now I don't need to think about my account anymore. :)
In the past few months, I've seen two of my guildies get hacked. Neither one had authenticators and in one of the cases, multiple people had the login information for that account. Do I think authenticators are worth it? I most certainly do. If $8 is too much to spend to 'protect' your hobby that you spend $15 a month on, you really need to reevaluate your priorities.
i got the mobile authinticator app for my ipod, ive never been hacked and i suppose now i never will. the only thing that sucks is my wife plays with my ipod alot and when i need to log in she gets ^&*!y cause i interrupt her, especially if i crash and am in need of it immediatly to not get kicked from group. ive been considering switching to a regular authinticator and taping it to my monitor. havent decided yet.
After getting hacked within the first week I started playing I bought an authenticator. Since then I have had no problems with unauthorized access and I know that it someone tried. I got an Blizz email confirming that I wanted to change my password - which I did not request. When I talked to Blizz it was confirmed that someone tried to get in but the Authenticator stopped them. After that I was convinced - I won't be without it.
My authenticator is attached to my keychain, since it is designed to do that, after all. Seeing as a place a rather high value (certainly higher than my WoW account) on being able to enter my own home and drive my own car, I find this a fine place to keep it.The authenticator is an incredible piece of very inexpensive super-security, and it's not really alright to propose that it's not that useful if you just happen to be prone to losing things.
Personally I don't use one as one friend uses my account from another location from time to time and its not really practical to have him ring me everytime he wants to log it on. I haven't had my account hacked.
