When you use the Zapthrottle Soul Inhaler - in concert with an Empty Soul Cage - on an Elite elemental hostile mob within the Dragon Isles AS IT PERISHES, the Zapthrottle Soul Inhaler will go in a 15-minute cooldown, and the Empty Soul Cage will be consumed. If you fail to maintain the cast through the mob's expiration, the Zapthrottle Soul Inhaler will instead only have a 30-second cooldown, and the Empty Soul Cage will NOT be consumed. You can attempt to use it on the same mob if the cooldown comes up in time. Only one player can inhale a soul from an individual mob when it dies.

A successful collection will yield one of the four Encaged Souls listed below, in line with the Elemental family of the mob:

You have two choices as to how to proceed with the resulting Encaged Soul:

You may open the item immediately, which will crush the remnants into (2) Fractured Glass and an amount of Awakened elements in line with the mob's family (e.g. Awakened Fire, Awakened Air, Awakened Earth, Awakened Frost)
You may wait 15 minutes for the Encaged Soul to change into a Docile Soul (Docile Fiery Soul, Docile Airy Soul, Docile Earthen Soul, or Docile Frosty Soul), which can then be opened to receive a single crafting reagent (Fiery Soul, Airy Soul, Earthen Soul, or Frosty Soul).

There are indications that other items may drop from these soul inhalations, but my testing hasn't yet yielded any results. It is unclear if the battle pets purported to drop using the Zapthrottle Soul Inhaler (Blaze Spirit, Gale Spirit, Dust Spirit, or Tide Spirit) come from when the Inhaler produces the Encaged Soul, from crushing the Encaged Soul container before the 15-minute time expires, or found within the Docile soul container.

Elementals in the open world that have successfully yielded caged souls for me:

Earthshatter Elemental in the Waking Shores yielded Encaged Earthen Soul
Stormbound Colossus in the Ohn'ahran Plains yielded Encaged Airy Soul
Force of the Springs in the Ohn'ahran Plains yielded Encaged Frosty Soul
Fire Elemental in the Azure Span yielded Encaged Fiery Soul

Note: I just found these by filtering wowhead's database for elite elemental mobs in the 4 Dragonflight zones. There may be many more viable targets to siphon elemental souls from. User Bigelf noted that you can also obtain Encaged Fiery Soul from fire elementals in the Neltharus dungeon, for example.

I just want to emphasize that you need to channel this as the mob dies, meaning you should start the channel when the mob is very low hp.

If anyone want to know, I tried with multiple Zapp in my bag to try to cycle them to farm faster. IT DOES NOT WORK, everyone goes on CD.

On another note at this day I feel this is a borderline madness farm, without a strong dot class, or a friend it's infuriating.
Almost all elementals have some knockback stun, usually it doesn't bother anyone but you HAVE to cast Zapp and it does barely any dmg.

So you have here, killing something with half a millions point, with a class with only one dot, trying to not kill your target with some many proc from everywhere.
The mod is almost dead, you cast zapp, and poof he cast a stun, and nope too late you didn't had the dmg and the mod stuns you, it could have not been a problem, but zapp goes on 30 sec cooldown.
TOO BAD YOUR DOT FINALLY KILLED YOUR TARGET !

There is so many thing that can go wrong, there is a few of them without killing horde of mobs around, there is something not a lot of room to kite them, they cast often their stun, your proc, another player "helping".
Yes i'm mad because I tried to kill the same elemental for 30 min, every time something $%^&ed up like it stuns me at the end, I crit proc near the end.

I wish they rework the Zapp and makes it kills a target with less than 10% or 5% Health wich will be much easier to achieve

In order to capture a soul with Empty Soul Cage (crafted by Jewelcrafting), the elemental must die while casting Zapthrottle Soul Inhaler (crafted by Engineering). The best method is to use dots, as well as stuns to prevent any abilities that may interrupt the cast. Once you receive the soul. do not open the item until the "Encaged" turns into "Docile", which will happen once the 15-minute timer expires. Docile souls may contain pets, but the majority of the time it will contain the elemental crafting reagent,

Hunter pets absolutely work for finishing off mobs while you channel, and I assume warlock pets would as well which honestly helps trivialize the weirdly difficult nature of trying to finish off elites with dots on a character who doesn't have a dot specialization.

Whoever had this idea needs to be tarred and feathered. An elite Elemental must die during the channel cast and after this you have to wait 15 minutes before the next use. And don't forget to have an Empty Soul Cage.

Assuming the absolute worst luck with multicraft, resourcefulness, and batch procs, the zapthrottle soul inhaler requires the following materials. Quality is irrelevant.

104 serevite ore
23 rousing earth (1 awakened earth, 13 rousing earth)

27 draconium ore
10 rousing order (1 awakened order)
2 khaz'gorite ore

Has thankfully been overhauled in 10.0.7:

Zapthrottle Soul Inhaler has received several quality of life improvements:
The device can now be used while moving.
The channel time of the device has been reduced to 4 seconds (was 12 seconds)
Channeling the device for its full duration now marks the target elemental for 30 seconds. Slaying it during this window will also grant its soul.
The cooldown for a successful soul capture has been reduced to 5 minutes (was 15 minutes).

The DPS is still horrid, a full channel did 179 DPS.

You only need one of these for all the soul items! It's not consumed on use. It stays in your bags! I wanted Earthen Soul and Frosty Soul and bought 2 of those for 28k in total. Don't do the mistake that i made.

Surely one of the MOST anti -player items in the game ,but blizz promotes this garbage content. Using the item causes an Stun which stops the channel. A reason for me to find a another game to play.

I have collected all four pets. Used a Level 70/70 Marksmanship Hunter with a Scalehide Hunter's pet. (Gave priority to keeping my Hunter's pet healthy.) Used 184 Empty Soul Cages which are worth around 60,000 Gold.

I'm not sure why so many people are having a hard time with this when you can get stuff like Bottled Putrescence to help you out. Befriend an alchemist, buy it off the AH, something... Whittle them down, throw the potion, use the zapthrottle. Easy and done.

A non-raid farming tip for the Stormbound Colossus for non-pet classes:
There's a patrolling colossus that spawns around /way 21.57 37.28 and patrols around the pile of rocks, along the coast. There's a group of centaurs at /way 20.68 37.14. First, kill any mobs that the centaurs are fighting or that are standing between the centaurs and the rocks (so you only have to deal with the colossus when you're ready). Wait for the pat to come close to the centaurs and pull it to the centaurs so they engage. The centaurs won't pull aggro, so you'll have to tank it while killing it. When it gets low on health (30-40k-ish) you should be able to start channeling while the centaurs kill it. That should be a small enough window for them to kill it while you channel without getting stunned.

Respawn timer on the Colossus is about 7 min. So it will respawn before your trap is ready again.

Another tip for farming Stormbound Colossus in the Storm Scar area. Find the elite pathing near an Unstable Storm Totem and clear the area of non-Elite mobs. As you engage the Elite, click the Unstable Storm Totem which will damage the Elite. Burn it down to under 20% and start the Zapthrottle Soul Inhaler. With the Unstable Storm Totem and any pets you might have, you should be able to kick off Zap and have it running while the Elite dies. I was even knocked back in the middle of the cast but was able to recast quickly enough before the Elite died. And got my Encaged Airy Soul on the first ever try.

Don't waste your time trying to get Dust Spirit, Gale Spirit, Tide Spirit and Blaze Spirit I got over 100 attempts on each one and no pet yet. You are better off farming gold and buying them on the ah.

I just found this out through sheer luck. The mob can die but you legit need to cast it right before. When it died I ended up getting the full soul cage. It doesn't need to be the full cast time that it's used for. Hope this helps! (Was also doing it on a druid if that helps.)

For anyone who needs one of these and can't make it yourself, don't forget that it can be requested through the crafting system - there's a good chance it will be a big saving over buying the completed item off the AH. On my server the AH price for the inhaler was about 12k, but the mats came to about 2.5k (there's no benefit to higher quality so you can use whatever is available cheapest)

Having seen other people express annoyance with having a lack of dots, pets or abilities to kill mobs while channeling, I wanted to share that I've seen people mention using this potion, Bottled Putrescence, which will apply a pretty hefty 10s dot where you can just toss and apply this and then begin channeling.

Tide Spirit - 98 kills

Blaze Spirit - 14 kills

Gale Spirit - 29 kills

To make things go faster, I had two level 70 alts killing and draining two different elemental types every 15 minutes until I got all four pets.

These elemental souls should be candidates for the worst crafting materials to gather.

To order to craft something using a soul:
1) Have an Engineer craft you a Zapthrottle Inhaler
2) Have a JC craft you some soul cages
3) Go to a select few spawns across the isles to suck off an elemental
4) Mess up the suck and wait for respawns because if you go solo have fun struggling to coordinate a DoT/Pet kill while sucking without getting interrupted
5) Wait 15 minutes for your reagent to "form" (Hopefully you didn't crack it open early)
6) Head back to the AH to get the rest of your crafting order materials
7) Place your order (Hopefully you sucked off the right elemental!)

Any future use of your time hunting these souls is pointless because they are BoP and are used to create BoP gear. So I don't see it worth investing your time into soul farming unless you really want a specific crafted item. They would be worth a lot of gold if these were tradable since they are a PITA to gather.

This rant was brought to you while waiting for the Zappthrottle cooldown and elemental respawn timers.

So as a pet collector I crafted one of these on my engineer warrior and came here as I was wondering which mobs to use it on.

After reading all the comments I just went to the auction house and bought them all.

I'm too old for such intricate game-play. I guess the design of this was meant to hark back to the days of vanilla when you invested vast amounts of time and money for relatively little reward, but that style of play really doesn't interest me anymore. I /salute anyone who can be bothered to collect the pets in the manner intended.

Didn't see any comments about alternate places to get different souls. so imma post my findings here;
The soldier looking water elementals in Camp Nowhere in Azure Span are suckable and gives frosty soul.
The Stone Golems in Tyrhold in Thaldraszus are aslo suckable and gives earth soul. (really nice since there is always people there to kill them any way)

BET there is more out there, seams like it could be something with "elemental" themed rares. Since iv only been able to suck rares.

Do we know if its possible to maybe suck out some rousing order soul?

I confirm that a LOT of elite elementals can actually be captured. And it doesn't even have to be open world ones! Any more serious elites (and by that I mean ones that weren't summoned in any way) can be casted on, including the last boss in primalist future and trash mobs in raid. People who have issues with doing DOTs on open world might want to consider group activities with apropiate elite elementals present.

The warning that pops up asking you if you want to soulbind the item, meaning you have to move your mouse all the way to the OK button, at which point the mob is long dead, is the most annoying thing ever. Once you get past this hurdle, which is tough, the timing is 100x easier.

This thing is a total POS. i just got it last nite and whenever i try and use it.. it has a "use this and it will bind to you" box pops up. by the time i click it the guy is dead. needs to be fixed. make it autobind when used.. stop with the BS warning box.

Tip for monks to make it easy....

1. Be in Windwalker spec, with Paralysis and Storm, Earth, and Fire talented.
2. Bring the elemental to very low health (10-20k). I just melee'd when it was getting low to fine-tune.
3. Use Paralysis.
4. Back away from the mob a bit.
5. Cast Storm, Earth and Fire. This will summon your spirits, but if you aren't actively attacking the elemental they will just stand next to you.
6. While targeting the elemental, hit that cast of Storm, Earth, and Fire a second time. This will cause them to head to your target to finish it off.
7. Use the Zapthrottle Soul Inhaler quickly (this is the reason you want to stand back a bit from the target - so you have time after ordering your spirits to attack to start the channel before they get to it).
8. Loot.

So they changed the c/d to 30 seconds, BUT the c/d for the caged soul is still 15 minutes. AND they will not allow 2 encaged fiery souls.. sigh
I am using a druid with typhoon, fury of elune and force of nature. i got the air pet on 1st try surprisingly, the dust took me 110,
they also changed how the zapthrottle works as long as you channel the whole thing you get the encaged soul. he does not have to die during the cast, so any class with a stun can stun click sapthrottle when its done channeling just kill as usual. when he dies you get the caged soul

Anyone have an idea how to make this device work? Everytime I click on it to begin draining a soul, I'm warned that using this device will bind it to me. I click ok, click on the device again, and get the same warning. I'm totally unable to drain the soul into the cage.

yikes, i say yikes :p that script here doesn't work because of a ui conflict, even if you disable all addons. doesn't work. i did get it to soulbind by using it on an elite elemental while others were killing it. it works fine now except for elementals i can't use it on. doesn't appear to need to be used right before death, i have used it after tagging the target, channeling and having it die well after channeling.

Patch 10.0.7 changed this item. You no longer have to be channelling when the elemental dies, although that still works. You can use it at any time and if you finish the 4 second channel the mob will get a 20s debuff and will drop a caged soul if it dies in that time. Much easier now for those who can't damage while channelling (no pets or dots). As always, time your channel to avoid interrupts that most of these mobs do, like stuns and throw ups. These are on timers, so start the channel just after one is cast.

Also the item now has a 5 minute CD rather than 15. Except that each type of caged soul is unique and still has a 15 minute hatch CD. This can come in handy if you have different elementals nearby. Eg: the storm event in Imbu can have both water, earth and the storm type available.

Clearly, this item was created by some troll because of the way it works or does not work:

Not all fat and even elite elementals can be valid targets for it.
Some elementals give cages for not related elements.
At the beginning of Dragonflight, it worked on elites from the Vault raid but then someone decided to make most of the elementals not eligible for it, but not all of them.
Looks like no elementals from Zaralek Caverns are eligible for it.

I am having the same old issues. The "Using this item will bind it to you" nor the okay or cancel buttons rectify anything.
I took the Mechanical Mind > Novelties Knowledge points to make toys and sell them, but I can't collect the needed souls. I have an Empty Soul Cage in my bag, but this won't work.
The Zaptrottle Mote Extractor used to work perfectly. You need to do something.
Yes, I tried the macro, and with that, it just doesn't work, no channeling.

I haven't seen anyone in the comments mentioned this item's update, so I will. Now you can either kill the enemy while it's casting, or 30 seconds after a full cast. And the cooldown has been reduced from 15 minutes to 5 minutes after a successful capture, although in my opinion there shouldn't be a cooldown at all, seems pointless. Also, you can only have one of a caged-soul type at a time, for example if you have 1 encaged frosty soul in your backpack, you won't be able to even cast it on another frosty soul enemy.

One of the worst things in Dragonflight. Even after the cooldown nerf you still have to wait 15 minutes (if you want the Docile Soul) to get a new Encaged Soul of the same type.

This thing has been the BANE of my existence numerous times, the first annoying part being the channel, given pretty much all of the elemental mobs you can use it on have some sort of knockback, stun, or blind which means it's very easy for them to CC you during the channel and start all over again. Then you have the fact that the souls take 15 minutes to calm down before you can use the encaged soul to get the soul you need for whatever craft your making. So that means if you only need a single type of soul you have to wait 15 minutes at a time before you can even get the next one. Then you have to buy soul cages from JC's which can be pricey at times, followed by the soul inhaler has a five minute CD, meaning you have to wait 5 minutes between each use.

So many stupid complexities to how it works that it's astounding that it made it out of the beta and PTR like this given there is literally no point in having it be like this at all.

I've discovered the easiest way to obtain the souls is to follow someone killing elementals during a a Primal Storm. Tap an elemental during the fight and then proceed to help them nuke the elemental. I was able to easily obtain an elemental soul without worrying about crowd control.

I will offer words of warning. Do not expect to tap different elementals in the same storm (frost and air). For some insane reason 2 different elementals in the same storm are considered the same elemental. You'll be given a warning message saying you already have an elemental of that type.
