This is a new buyable item from Ve'nari in 9.0.5. It is a normal item you keep in your inventory, like the Phantasmic Infuser for Torghast, and unlike most of her other buyable upgrades. While you have it in your bags, you'll be able to see Stygia Nexus in the Maw. They look like small green balls of energy floating in the air, often in out-of-the-way locations (for example, on a ledge behind the Stygian Incinerator). They will also show up on your minimap as yellow dots, identical to resource nodes like herbs and ore do when they are being tracked.

If you use the Dowser in close proximity to a Nexus, you'll channel for 8 seconds on the cloud. Each second, you may recieve 1-3 Stygia, 1 Stygia Dust, and/or 1 Scheggia di Stigia, or nothing at all, making it highly variable. After the channel, the Nexus will disappear (unknown at this time if this also causes it to disappear for everyone else). They appear to spawn in specific locations, often on ledges or on top of pillars, sometimes accessible only via a grappling point. They're somewhat rare (I found 6 in a brief circuit of the northern half of the Maw on the PTR, with no one else in the zone). Since they (currently) have the same minimap icon as profession nodes, if you're farming specifically for them, recommend turning off tracking for resource nodes.

Yah I went onto the PTR today and Ve'nari is not selling the Stydia Dowser. Possible that Blizzard removed it or maybe just bugged?

Stygia Dowser is sold by Ve'nari in The Maw for 1500x Stygia.
Looks like you might need to be exalted/appreciative with Ve'nari to purchase it.

The Stygia Dowser is an item that stays in your bags and allows you to search for Stygia Nexuses. Stygia Nexus are small balls of green energy, reminiscent of engineering motes from past expansions. Stygia Nexuses are usually in areas that are hard to reach, such as behind hordes of mobs, deep inside caves, or in areas only reached via grappling with the Animated Levitating Chain Ve'nari upgrade.
Stygia Dowser allows you to track Stygia Nexus on the minimap, and when used nearby a Nexus, it will drain it, granting you a small amount of Stygia, as well as some Stygia Dust and Scheggia di Stigia.

Stygia Dowser is part of the first step of the secret to complete a puzzle within Domination Keep (located deep within Perdition Hold). The puzzle is located on a platform area near the platform that leads to the Soulsteel Forge, is accessible by grappling, and will be signaled on your minimap. The area has a green fog covering the platform, and when you arrive there, you will get an extra action button to use your Stygia Dowser.
The grappling location can be found at 23.0 68.4 and the Stygia Delirium platform is located at 24.0 75.5.

9.0.5 has been out for a few hours, and Ve'nari doesn't seem to be selling this item. But the Bound Shadehound is in my mount journal (not unlocked, of course, just visible in the list) so hopefully this is just a bug they can hotfix.

Edit: As people in the replies said, it doesn't show up in Ve'nari's list of items at all until you hit max reputation with her.

Can confirm that you must be max reputation to see this item. I was not max rep and this was not available so I went and did the final rep I needed and it appeared on page 2 for 1500 stygia.

The respawntime isnt that bad.
There is a lot of them all around the Maw, but i find it better just to circle around the ones i have posted here.
Keep your Eye of the jailer low when you farm these, they disappear if you get interrupted when channeling.

If you are planning on buying the Dowser for improved Stygia farming: probably not worth it.

I spend all day on multiple chars farming the Maw with these and the average Stygia you get per node is around 9ish.
From my data, you would have to farm 150-200 nodes until you break even on Stygia.

To put this into perspective: if you are just doing a weekly round of Maw quests, you will probably walk by 5ish easy to reach nodes which are not a big detour.

Of course, probably nobody will buy this purely for the Stygia. It's more about the dust and slivers to make Stygia Bars.

Some notes on this farm, after having done this farm for roughly 8-10 hours.

Stygia Nexus nodes can yield anything anything from 0 to 4 on average, sometimes 5 or 6. Usually drops a combination of slivers and dust, or sometimes of just one type.

Nodes have a long spawn timer, and are not shareable. Can not be tapped while someone else is tapping, and will despawn right after. If you get interrupted while channeling or stop channeling, node will despawn then also.

With more people starting the farm after learning of the mount, so expect to see a node being tapped just before you get to one more often that you getting to one during peak time for the next several weeks after patch launch.

Pre-requisites: Be Appreciated by Ve'nari, have 3,500 Stygia, have learned Animated Levitating Chain. Helpful: Words of Warding is active because of Assassin's Soulcloak

Buy Stygia Dowser for 1,500 Stygia
Go to Domination Keep in Perdition Hold (approx at 23.0, 68.4), and grapple up 1 level. Go to the left, and go up the stairs to a second hook at about 24.0, 75.5.
Use your extra action button and solve the Rune Puzzle to get Crumbling Stele by making the runes above the chest match the runes on the spikes. Spike #1 was to your left grappling up and goes clockwise. You have limited attempts before being locked out for two hours. If this happens, use the time to farm
Return to Ve'nari and buy Partial Rune Codex for 2,000 Stygia.
Retrieve Rune Codex Page: Forging from the cave in the Beast Warrens located at 48.8, 84.7. The page is in the back left.
Retrieve Rune Codex Page: Souls from Perdition Hold located at 27.2, 72.3.
Retrieve Rune Codex Page: Binding from Tremaculum at 24.6,12.67. The teleport up is at 27.6,17.3.
Read all the pages by clicking on them to get Codice Runico Intatto
Pet Stray Soul in the River of souls to get Anima di Lupo Volenterosa. Go against the current and you'll eventually find him.
Kill the rare Soulforger Rhovus to get Soulforger's Tools
Spend the next 2 - 8 hours of your life farming 200 Stygia Dust and 200 Scheggia di Stigia. The Stygia Dowser will allow you to see Stygia Nexus on the minimap. On the ground these look like glowing green orbs. Stand next to one and click on the Stygia Dowser. Only one person can tap a nexus at a time. I recommend not going over eye 2 for this.
Celebrate the end of grinding
Go to Soulsteel Anvil (located at the very top of Domination Keep at 20.2,67.0-You will need to grapple hook up the side) to create 20 Lingotto di Stigia
Create Armored Husk by combining 20 Lingotto di Stigia with Soulforger's Tools
Optional: Take the Chaotic Rift to get down (it takes you to Zovaal's Cauldron)
Go to the Binding alter at 45.2,48.2 to combine Armored Husk with Anima di Lupo Volenterosa to get Feral Shadehound
Read Crumbling Stele to get the rune order
Use Feral Shadehound to get start Feral Shadehound which starts the binding ritual
Run Feral Shadehound into a cage or pillar to not have to bother with mob agro while you punch in the correct rune order.
This completes Feral Shadehound which gives Bound Shadehound
Learn the mount, brag to guildies/friends

A quick note on farming. When Words of Warding is active, as long as you don't turn it in, you can cloak easily in Perdition Hold, which makes Perdition Hold ideal for farming Stygia Dust and Scheggia di Stigia. It also makes it easier to get Rune Codex Page: Souls as well as get to Go to Soulsteel Anvil.

Another thing I noticed is that when you collect resources from one stygia nexus, another one seems to spawn almost instantly. I think there are two active nexus in each particular sub-zone of the maw. This is why camping a spot doesn't seem to work as the nexus are random. HOWEVER, I think some more more common spawn locations than others. If you are having trouble finding one, I'd check the more rare spots, which for Perdition Hold is at the very very top of Dominion Keep as well as the very southern part where your Assassin's Soulcloak will fall off.

It seems that the nexus are respawned more often in the Beastwarrens especially in the Prodigum. There may be 3 nexus spawn at a time. Nexus also spawn relatively quick around (40,49). And with unknown reason, I seldomly found nexus spawn at the north of Gorgoa.

FYI, draining a stygia nexus does add to your Eye of the Jailer. I was farming them at 4/5 nearly maxed out, wasn't killing anything and draining the nexuses capped me for the day. It's not a noticeable amount but it adds up over time.

Can anyone confirm if blizz has nerfed the spawns of the stygia nodes? I'm almost practically the only one in the Maw farming these and I find maybe two an hour in Beastwarrens. Maaaybe one up by Stygian Incinerator, but it seems like there is a serious drought with these or something glitched and they just aren't spawning.

Ok, so after a bit more research and some more time spent, it just seems these nodes are just really random spawns, which explains why sometimes I get the same ones from the same places over and over and not other places

I would like to make mention as well that claims of doing everything in 8-10 hours are either wrong or extremely exaggerated. I've been farming these regularly for two weeks now and I'm only at 154/172 for dust and silver. I have yet to find anything more than a handful of spots outside of the Beastwarrens, mainly around the Stygian Incinerator and a couple in/around River of Souls. I have not seen any in any other locations.

I will admit that maybe other people are farming them too, so I won't disagree if anyone argues that, but the amount I AM finding and never seeing another soul (no pun intended) leads me to believe that there are barely any other players searching for these. Our server alone is almost "new player" status and the couple other servers we're linked to are low populations too.

So, take your time and just keep picking away at it.

After much some experimenting with what was the best way to lazy afk camp for nodes, because $%^& running around this horrible zone, I think I figured out a good solution. In my experience farming for these late at night, the fart clouds seem to spawn in a set cluster track similar to how mining nodes were in classic. There can only be one spawn up at a given time, and once you siphon that node the timer resets for that set (7-8 ish minutes). This is why you could camp a single location late at night and never see anything pop up for an hour, because said node was up somewhere else. The best spot I found was hiding in the back of Calcis (19, 34 roughly on the ledges). You can see all but 2-3 of the nodes in that track in a mob safe afk spot. If it's been about 10 minutes and you haven't seen a respawn, run out and check 23,34 and 21,39. I was able to happily play another game while I just slowly afk farmed instead of running around this awful zone, and getting aggro on every mob and their hamster mothers.

Yea I gave up after gathering about 40ish dust/silver. No point in wasting hours and hours going for the ability to mount in a zone I never go to anyways. It's easier to wait until 9.1 then eventually get it for collections sake.
This may be easier in theory but in practice I would just go for the other two mounts in Twisting Corridors or the rare drop.

The amount per node is truly hilarious, im still on it and im glad im not impatient, but just 1 sliver and dust per node is sure not motivating.
There is a difference between a challenging and annoying grind.

I suggest to spend your stygia on something before you learn how to do the puzzle in the tower. If you fail, the elite comes and kicks you in nowhere. Yo die and cant retrieve stygia. On my first attempt I lost 300 stygia out 1600 I had.

Absolutely bizarre to me that this item becomes available to buy at Appreciative rep, yet there is just about zero instruction with it.

You figure out easily to use it on the nodes that you occasionally see but what do you do with the Slivers and Dust you get? Who knows...

Sadly you have to come here to find out what to do. I get it's kind of a "secret" but the fact you buy this tool with no real instructions just seems strange.

Edit: I take all that back. Sometimes coming to Wowhead and getting the end result directly you miss the steps along the way if you'd tried to figure it out yourself. I think Blizz did have clues in the various pieces to get to the mount and I kind of regret not taking the time to figure it out myself (especially since there is such a long grind for the Slivers and Dust anyway). Sorry!

A couple points to supplement the info here:

The "solve the Rune Puzzle" description is pretty worthless. What you do is you pick 2 runes above the chest to switch them (with the goal of matching the runes above the spike). If you screw this up you get the 2 hour debuff, so yeah it would have been nice to give that little detail...
When you solve the Rune Puzzle the chest will open, there will be no other indication. Grab the item from the chest and you'll be auto teleported down.
The "stray soul" is literally a Wolf spirit. It will show up on your mini map and be moving quickly downstream (the direction the souls are going), so you have to go upstream to intercept it. It's moving too quickly to catch it going downstream
you need the Stygia Dowser before you can even see the Rune puzzle to solve.

After completing the grind for dust and silver, I still had the Dowser in my inventory (and can still see nodes), but a little research on wowhead indicates there doesn't appear to be any reason to keep it. No sell price, so just delete. (please let me know if this was a mistake :)

I was able to get all my dust and slivers by doing laps around the Beast Warrens. I did a lap, then checked the middle and repeated.

I was not quite clear about he spikes and the direction.
youtube was helpful, and here is a shorter version:
Look at the top of the spikes around the platform - arrange glyphs from 1-6 accordingly

I find the Stygia Nexus points with best frequency in the Beastwarrens. Many are on floating cages around the Shadehound area, with grapple points allowing you to avoid many mobs. Also, once you begin to channel the Stygia Dowser, do NOT move or get hit. There is no channeling bar shown, but it follows the rules of all channeled spells. Interupting it will stop the channel, and you just lost the rest of what was in the Stygia Nexus. Beastwarrens also seem to have the least competition for the Nexus points, as most players avoid the area like the Plague. (Much like Perdition hold).

Here is my pain reduction method (because farming stygia slivers and dust is a major pain). I farmed the Calcis area. There are about a dozen nodes around there. I would log in and out at /way 19.5 34.5. There is a node a few yards north and another a few yards south. After checking those nodes, head towards the node that spawns at /way 23.5 34.5. Look left and slightly up as you cross the open area and you can see a spawn next to a grapple point at /way 21.5 31.9. Grab it if you see it then continue on to the other node.

Next head to the grapple point at the end of the spike at /way 24.8 30.5. From here you can see a node across to the NE. There are multiple nodes below to the west. Adjutant Dekaris spawns next to a grapple point on the spike above and to the east. A node spawns right at her feet.

Head back down the spike to the open area and cross to the path leading up at /way 20.4 38.0. A node spawns on a short spike to your left and another spawns to the right at /way 19.4 37.0. This is the other end of your search area. Log out here and simply reverse your course next time you log in.

There are several reasons I call this the pain reduction method. First I rarely engaged in more than two fights, often only one. Second, I was only online for a few minutes each time and generally got 1 or 2 of both the slivers and the dust for my trouble. Yes, in case you haven't figured it out yet, this method took two weeks but it was never mind numbingly dull because I just wasn't at it long enough. I simply logged in and out several times a day and did this quick route. If I needed to do something else (quests, raids, etc), I'd hearth out, take care of those things, then come straight back to the farm checking on a number of other nodes on the way back.

Update: I've had my mount for a few weeks now. It changes your Maw experience significantly. For those of you who are considering giving up because of all the work necessary to obtain this mount, try this method out, especially if you plan on spending much time in this zone. After all, if you're thinking about not getting the mount at all, it really doesn't matter that this method takes longer than the other methods. What matters is getting it done without all the pain of the grind.

So I was capped on slivers looking for more clouds for the dust. I couldn't find any in two hours thinking they were over farmed. I had an idea and turned some of my mats into bars. And wouldn't you know? The clouds don't show up if you're capped on slivers... D:

It appears you cannot do this, even if the residue shows, while you are on the last phase of the Necrolord Assault. I could only assume it would be the same if you had the extra action button from anything else.

Edit: Finished assault, still can't (though it's still up).

I'm an engineer and found that if I use Gathermate with gas node detection turned on, the Stygia Nexus nodes are tracked for me on my mini-map. Very handy to grab them.

After I finished the mount i deleted it and Ve'nari has it to sell again. So if you´re wondering "what if" you need it again you can just buy it from Ve'nari.
So it's safe to delete

Here's a map with all the coordinates compiled from the comments on this page. Useful to keep on a second monitor or to avoid the markers on your minimap in-game which might obscure the indicator for where the nodes are.

Delete Stygia Dowser if you cant see Stygia Nexus and buy it again. Normally you will see Stygia Nexus again.

If the Necrolord Assault is going on (which makes Draka's Battlehorn your Extra Action spell) you cannot perform the extra action atop Domination Keep with the Stygia Dowser to begin solving the rune puzzle. Therefore, you have to wait until the Assault ends (if it just began, that's over 3 days) to even begin grinding the questline. After grinding over a month to get Appreciative with Ve'nari, that's a brutal cherry-on-top in terms of waiting to get the mount.

If you don't have this yet in 9.1.5 or beyond: I've approached this grind differently. As you can start collecting the Stygia crafts before doing other parts, I bought the Dowser and tag any Stygia Nexus I come across naturally. Over about half a year I've gotten over a 100 of both items. I think I'll just continue to do this until I hit 200 of both (or very close to), and then get the mount. Actually grinding this is a pain, and the mount is not unique at all, especially now we can mount anything in the Maw. Save yourself the trouble and do it gradually.

EDIT: about half a month later I decided to do one farm of about 20 minutes, and tag Nexi during assaults and Maw quests, and I hit exactly 200 of each.

I encountered a bug in this "quest" chain: after I looted the Willing Wolf Soul I was no longer able to see the Stygia Nexus nodes or interact with the Soulsteel Anvil. Deleting the Willing Wolf Soul and logging out/in again let me gather the resources once more.

Hereby a small tip for anyone that is on the step of 200x Stygia Dust and Stygia Sliver.
I did this during the week of Fated Sanctum of domination. This meant alot of groups for Worldboss Mor'Geth.
I farmed these stygian notes in the beastwarrens and use the LFG tool for Mor'Geth groups to get in different shards.

Took me 2 hours to complete the 200 materials this way.

Doing these post-SL and just a few friendly tips:

1. Do NOT enter the maw through Korthia, enter through Oribos and jump down. The nodes are bugged if you go through Korthia and you can't see them.

2. Get a comfortable riders barding - the SL mobs can daze you still and it's pretty annoying.

3. I used paste/tomtom; I highly recommend at least using it initially to see where nodes spawn, and then I turned it off later since the regular map has the yellow dots that show you where the nodes are.

4. I did the Beastwarrens circle and it seemed as though almost invariably a node would spawn that needed to be grappled to, and one spawns in the cave where the shadehound runs into in its 2nd/3rd phases during that Hunt during each round of circling. EDIT: just finished this whole farm; I would highly recommend going to the most dense places - which is the center of the beastwarrens and then perdition hold. This is by far the best way to do it.

EDIT: Oh it's helpful to have something with slowfall/Dshield, etc. since there's no flying in the maw. the grappling gets quite high.

Lots of good info here, but one tip I don't see mentioned is simply switch your covenant to Venthyr for Door of Shadows. It makes getting to some of the Stygia Nexus nodes MUCH easier. Good luck with the farm! I just did this in Dragonflight and there was nobody else farming these, so it was fairly quick and took roughly 3.5 hours start to finish.
