This works good as a white hood, which I am sure can be worked into the transmog set of anyone who favors white. Cloth, Leather, Mail, or even Plate.

at the Stormwind docks there is an npc flanked by two children. Her name is Alaina Hearthsong.

This most likely has nothing to do with acquiring Alaina's Bonnet, but the only other NPC that shares a last name with Alaina Hearthsong is Keilan Hearthsong.

You can pick up Charred Locket from the Broken Shore scenario in Stage 6, it is looted from "Ashes of a Fallen Crusader" on an altar.
This unlocks a new dialogue option with Alaina now located in Eastvale Logging Camp after you have completed Broken Shore.
This does not reward the Bonnet, but it gives her new dialogue.

EDIT: Leaving the area and coming back Alaina will be gone and the Bonnet will be in the bedroom!

To obtain this you have to meet two requirements:

Have a level 100 Alliance character
Have not completed the Broken Shore invasion scenario

Start the Broken Shore invasion scenario and progress to stage 6. Once you do so, head to coordinates to find an altar guarded by Eredar summoners. On that altar is a pile of ashes. Interact with the pile of ashes to loot the Charred Locket. Finish the remainder of the scenario and make sure you turn in The Battle for Broken Shore.

Once you do so, head on over to the Eastvale Logging Camp located at coordinates in the Elwyn forest. Go inside the only 2 story house in this area(located in the southeastern edge of the camp) and talk to Alaina Hearthsong. Now that you have the locket, you should have a dialogue option to hand it over. Give it to her and leave the area momentarily(I went to the border of Redridge Mountains). Once you return head to the 2nd floor bedroom of the same building to find Alaina's Bonnet in a chest at the foot of the bed.

That's it! It should be noted that while you do need to be Alliance to do all of this, the bonnet's appearance is cross faction. So all you Horde out there aren't left out as long as you have 1 eligible Alliance character.

Note: Unfortunately demon hunters cannot get this since they can't access the broken shore invasion scenario.

This just got to a whole other level of ._.
After I opened the chest and got the bonnet I randomly leftclicked on the bed.
"Alaina Heartsong"
"Level 20 Corpse"
The corpse is invisible, that could just be a bug. She probably comitted suicide when she found out about her husband.

If you don't get the Charred Locket during Stage 6, you can go back during stage 7 and pick it up.

For anyone who's curious, if you finished the scenario and missed this (charred locket) you can buy it off the AH and continue as normal. :)

I was able to run back and get this during the early part of stage 7. Don't panic!

Love it as a flavor item. Using it for xmog on my undead warrior. SS included with the others, check it out.

A little part of this Broken Shore domestic tragedy is played out on the Stormwind Docks, where Alaina Hearthsong stands with her two children, Sam and Ella, waiting for their father "to return" (ahem). Do find her there before you depart for battle. Drawing near will prompt a few lines of heart-rending dialogue. I think I might level an alt just to stay permanently with her in her cottage, instead of deliberately abandoning her so I can then rifle through her drawers after she is dead.

Then again, it is a nice transmog ...

And I wonder what became of the children? I checked the rest of the camp and Stormwind Orphanage - they were not there. A gloomy tale that has not ended, perhaps.

For those like me who just left the house for a while and wondered if they messed up;

you need to leave Elwynn Forsest (e.g. go to Redridge mountains) and then come back. After which the NPCs have despawned and you see a chest at the end of the bed on the 2nd floor with the bonnet.

Note that the Charred Locket is not a BoP, so even if you've completed the Broken Shore on all your Alliance toons you can still do the quest by buying the locket on the AH.

If you are having difficulty getting the chest to spawn, just logout then log back in, and the chest should appear.

Her body is not visible since it seems to be bugged (?) so you can /tar alaina to spot her.

I will confirm this is is an exact match to the Aurora Cowl and the Shadow Council Cowl (Cloth) - however as stated by previous posters it is transmogable by any class regardless of gear. The Holy Shroud (Cloth) has slightly more grey or blue tones in the folds.

So I bought the charred locket on an alliance Demon Hunter since I play horde but she isn't in her house for me.. so guess DH's cant do this at all.

So, we callously break the news of her husband's death to her, then leave her alone while she's grieving and doesn't want to be alone. After we leave her, she kills herself. Then we go back into her house and rob her?

Maybe I should pour salt on her flowerbeds, too? Just for good measure.

You can use this on horde characters too once you have obtained this on alliance.

Tried this today and stayed inside the house for about 3 minutes. She and the kids literally just vanished with me sitting on a chair on the upper floor.
So, you don't have to leave the area.

Just needed to add: You can make a character with a lvl 100 trial boost and get the locket. Once you do, remove yourself from the instance and go to Eastvale Logging Camp. IF Alaina isn't there, send the locket to your actual character via mail and she will be there.

Pro-tip - you can create a class trial (start at level 100) First thing you do is the Broken Shore Senario... pick up your bonnet that way. Just did it, works fine.

2019. If you want to do the Scenario and have boosted or leveled past it, you can pick it up off the Call Board in SW or Org.

If you already have it, but Recruiter Lee doesn't appear, abandon the quest and retake it off the Call to Action / Command Board.

** Leveled thru Panda>BfA with the 15th Anniversary AV xp, but do want to open each zone. I deleted all the starter missions and retook The Legion Returns and Recruiter Lee was there! But all he did was tell me my ship was ready and I got quest completion so ? I don't know if the scenario actually works anymore or not.

This item does seem to require the phase from having done the Legion Broken Shores invasion, and not just skipped it using the chat option, I came to this conclusion being as the only characters that I have that can see Alaina Hearthsong are ones that actually did the scenario event.

I picked up the quest "To Be Prepared" directly from Recruiter Lee in Stormwind Harbor. I could not pick up the quest from the Hero's Call Board. However, after doing the quest and turning it in, I could not pick up the next quest and start the scenario. So I went back to Recruiter Lee and told him I wanted to skip and go straight to Dalaran. From there I visited the Archivist and started the scenario.

Once inside the scenario, the map did not work for me and instead of the listed coords, I found the altar at 52, 66 not far from where the alliance starts out for step 6.

I came here really excited to find a cosmetic item like this that could be used for any class! However, having read through the comments and now understanding that in order to earn it I basically need to drive a heartbroken widow to suicide thereby orphaning her two children... well, I think I can manage life in Azeroth without a bonnet after all. 😭

Heya,

I can confirm as of 11-Jan-2022, this is still obtainable. Create a fresh allied race, select Legion in Chromie time. This will direct you to complete the broken shore scenario. While doing this, grab the locket, complete the scenario and then head back to the house. Easy done.

At stage 7, just do a 180° turn, and it's right there, straight ahead on the altar. Charred pile of ash.

Still doable as of 10.0 DF prepatch.
You MUST finish the broken shore scenario. It is not enough just to pick up the locket and leave.
As far as I can tell, if you have done the scenario already, not doable again.
Either log a ally character that hasn't done Legion introduction and pick it up from a Hero's Call Board, or create a fresh allied race and start Legion timeline.

When you give Alaina the locket, you do not have to leave the zone. Just log out and back in again.

Looted behind the bed on second floor.

Just mentioning since I haven't seen others do so, but Alaina's Corpse was on the bed. Kinda dark scenario.

You can acquire the "Legion: The Legion Returns" quest from Arvhivist Elysiana next to Khadgar in the Violet Citadel to start the quest chain for the scenario.
