It's pretty simple. Tank with the VW (or Felguard) while dotting. I'd get Omen or another threat meter and use that even while solo, it helps keep the hate on the VW. Remember to leave some room between your threat levels for healing the VW (or Felguard).
Affliction's pretty fun since you just dot everything up and fear anything. Adds get dotted and feared. Juggling fear is like a fun minigame. Having the imp out on passive is a nice mana battery.
But also remember that the 'hunter is a caster eating mofo and learn to use his silence and buff eating well. The Succy is great against humanoids, learn to use her to seduce while another mob is feared.
It's not as hard as it sounds but it's not easy. And it's the most fun I've had playing any game ever.

What I did as affliction was, well, get a lot of practice at juggling mobs. Taking a few hits is fine, just drain life. If you're really having issues you could always use a succy and turn all her autocasts off. She can help with some DPS and keeping a mob busy while you dot/fear his friends.
I really love this class, and I hope you find the sweet spot with your dots/fears/pets. I've been using a questing guide (Joana/Mancow, it's almost worth buying) and I do quests he says need a group of at least 3 people all by myself.

Well, the thing with Affliction is that the Imp becomes a battery when you get all the way down Affliction. Well, any pet can be but the Imp on passive regens mana the best. A succy with all her autocasts turned off is almost as good but she also brings some extra dps.
It's all about your play style. I'm Felguard specced so I have him hitting one mob that has CoA and Corruption on them while I shadow bolt + Immolate + Fear + CoA + corruption (in that order) on a second mob. And once the second guy is far enough away I start in on a 3rd, by the time the second mob gets close to me I have my FG intercept him if he has more than 5% life left.
Soloing elites is easy, too. Dots, dots dots, heal the FG. Refresh dots maybe hope for a shadow bolt crit and go back to healing.
Maybe you've noticed by now but I love my Warlock.

Imp: grinding with Dark Pact at lvl 70, 5-mans, raids... has best mana regen for Dark Pacting during fights. Also good for demonic sac/SnF fire locks
Voidwalker: Never, really. I used him a lot at 60 for grinding but his threat is worthless at 70. Unless I'm fel dom spec and need a shield... then I have a macro to quick summon and sac him
Felhunter: Arenas, duels, sometimes BG's
Succy: BG's and leveling up as Dark Pact spec (most dmg with least mana use).. that or I sac her when I'm 0/21/40, heh
Felguard: Good for arenas, duels, or BG's, or grinding... but you give up a lot to spec that far into Demonology. Useless in raiding or 5-mans, except for the sacrifice buff perhaps
