As far as actually answering your question, I have no idea.
However, you're a little behind the times, man.

You were not prepared... for the battle against Illidan? That's my best guess.

I figured it meant we weren't prepared for the dangers of Outland (and Illidan himself)

"Imprisoned for ten thousand years... banished from my own homeland... and now you dare enter MY realm? You are not prepared."
That's from the TBC intro cinematic, so I would say it is indeed referring to a battle against him and his minions.
But then everyone had a few months to gear up and get prepared, and he got pwned. Poor Illidan.

It's a catchphrase Blizzard use to endorse TBC probably. It's iconic and there's so many freaking spoofs for it. Whenever you think of TBC you probably think of Fel corruption, demons, nagas and Illidan with his over commercialized catchphrase.

You
dare
venture into
my
realm?
You are not prepared!
I'm not sure why you don't understand the context in which this is used. Or did you just want to find something to complain about?

What exactly is Illidan so covinced we are not prepared for?
And second, why does he care at all how prepared we are for whatever we aren't prepared for? We are just some overzealous freakies he could 1-shoot, as far as Illidan thinks or should think (after all he is an oversized bare-chested macho with skulls where level should be displayed).
Please, don't tell me that "You are not prepared" is just a "catch-phrase with no lore meaning". Because a little part of me will die.
I think they gave him this catch phrase because he was supposed to be one of the Gods. =S
I have yet to raid BC....

Illidan doesn't know what he's talking about.
I was in Outland the day TBC launched. He didn't show up until 2.1 five months later. I was apparently a heck of a lot more prepared then he was.
On a side note, what did make you decide to bring this up now?

He was there before TBC launched, he was just hiding behind the locked doors of the temple.

It's like shouting at the bugs in your kitchen "YOU ARE NOT PREPARED!" before smashing them with the newspaper - a waste of effort.
Have you tried? It is actually quite fun
