Not looking for the ultimate gaming experience with a $800 computer. It turns out that I can get the below computer for about $100. My current PC is dying and I wonder if this one would run WoW decently. It seems to be up to spec but you never know ... especially with the video.
HP/IBM Pentium-4 3GHz/1GB/40GB
HD/CD-ROM/Floppy XP Pro
Configuration: Black IBM or Compaq Desktop
Intel P4 3.0GHz, 1GB DDR RAM, 40.5GB Hard Drive, 3.5" Floppy Drive, 3D Video, CD-ROM Drive, 3D Sound, 10/100 LAN (DSL/Cable Internet Ready), Multi USB 2.0 Ports w/front USB access, Windows XP Professional w/License COA attached. Excellent Condition. Ready to Run. 30 days warranty.

Decently is a relative term. I can tell you that it would most probably not be a good playing experience even at the lowest resolution and detail settings. WoW will run on it (if the video card is supported) but i wouldn't expect much.

Hmm. Okay.
I am currently using a dinosaur 1.7ghz machine with only 1gb of ram. Except for places like dalaran or other densely populated areas, I get by okay with fps between 25-45, depending on the area. Not great, but for an ancient PC it works ok. There is also a 256mb nvidia card in it also, which may be the only reason it's tolerable.
I'll check out some more pricey pcs (or give up wow), whichever turns out to be the most reasonable. I can't dump $400 on a pc right now.

No offense, but if you can't spring $400 on your upgrade I suggest holding off on it for now. Otherwise you're going to be buying upgrades that are at the end of their life - for example a AGP video card when all the new ones are PCIe, and the end result will be that next time you go to upgrade you're going to be screwed and starting from scratch again.
I suggest saving up for a project like the $700 "Recession Special" Maximum PC did recently (which you can find the details on
here
). While you can't build this on your budget now, save a bit and look at building something like this in the future. It'll at least give you more room to upgrade next time you need to (like say after Cataclysm).
Hope that helps and good luck with it.

I suggest you try building your own computer from scratch, that way, you know exactly what parts are in it (and thus, what games it can support) and you can get a better deal on the price (in most cases). Lifehacker has an
excellent guide
on how to do so.

You also gain the needed expertise to not have to buy a whole new computer everytime something becomes a bottle neck in your system (you'll just have to upgrade that specific part :P)

I build my own computer recently and I found it to be very easy and I got so much more for my money. I am very proud of my system and like already stated, there is not a single component that cannot be upgraded now, so when I need to change something, open the case, pull out the old, install the new. Very simple. I also ventured in to the work of overclocking to squeeze a little extra performance out of my system, which again, was pretty easy. I made a modest jump from 2.8GHz to 3.2GHz and unlocked my tri-core CPU so now I am running a quad-core at no extra cost. I am now a 100% believer that custom computers are the only way to go.

I have done 40mans and even 25mans fine on my basic Dell Inspiron laptop with just RAM upgrade (1gig to 2.5gig did wonders) I would try to upgrade your ram to atleast 3gigs and see how that goes

my 1.8 gig sempron ran wow alright, on 1.75 gig of ram and the onboard radeon Xpress200 video card. didn't get more than 15-18 FPS, but even at that it did alright, especially as we used to have a good connection with minimal latency issues.
