Go play Guild Wars if that's what you want.

But even in guild wars after the first few missions the NPCs became obsolete. In all honesty, if you want to play games alone, then MMO's are not for you.

To the OP, I would love this implemented in the game, but more so that you could create characters from the character creation screen. Customize thier classes. race, appearence, name them, etc. I would love to go around WoW with 4 computer controlled characters in a group that I created following my main character around. I know it won't make WoW much of a MMO, but I'm not great at playing with other people anyway, I feel slightly uncomfortable being in guilds, doing raids etc, don't get me wrong though, I still enjoy playing WoW greatly.
And yes actually, I have been trying to find games like the kind I described, but most of those games are out of date now because they got pushed out by MMOs or they just don't have what I'm looking for.

Well Dungeons and Dragons Online has purchasable mercenaries. They aren't customizable (at least they weren't when I last played) but yeah. When they first came out they were a pain to control, I don't know how they are now, as I quit that to come play WoW =].

No. This is a stupid idea.
EverQuest added this only because the game was practically dead and it needed it. As it is, the population on WoW is HUGE. We do not need to hire NPCs. Learn to use /lfg

Then it was dumb of you to buy WoW... should've bought a single player RPG.

No kidding. If you don't want to interact with people when you play a game, don't buy a game that requires you to play with 4-24 other people.

Off topic> DDO is pretty good. I left it cause I never had any time to level, as you could only get Experience by doing dungeons, which you'd get an item at the end. If you think raiding in WoW is bad (I haven't gotten to raiding in WoW yet) then you don't want to play DDO. Other than the time sink, its as good as WoW in my opinion.
If Blizz gets the AI right for these Cohorts, I really wouldn't see a problem with it.
(LF Healer for <Whatever> PST!
<Whisper> Hey I've got a Healer Cohort lemme in.)
