Why is leather gear so expensive?

Maybe it's not this way after the level where hunters can wear mail, but right now in the 30s, rogue leather gear (+stam or +agi) is insanely expensive, relatively speaking. Where most other pieces are 1-3g a piece, anything with agility and stamina is 15-25g a slot. That's insane! My rogue just dinged 34 and I haven't had any good quest upgrades lately so I was looking for a little help at the AH but ... those prices are crazy.
Do the prices go down after hunters get out of leather or is this the theme through level 60? I'm not too worried after that because Outland and Northrend give pretty good and consistent upgrades.

To answer your question my opinion is that the Agi and Sta gear is so expensive because so many classes can use it. And as it seems (at least on my server) there are a lot of melee dps that wear leather. So people pay that much to get it so the price will never drop. Jus run some instances to get gear and be happy when ... of the Bandit drops and you get the roll cuz you will be making more money on that piece than any other ... of the ...

Spending 15g on a piece of gear is nothing. Let's face it; it isn't hard to make gold now. But, if you insist on getting better gear have a friend run you through a dungeon a couple of times to a particular boss and wait for a drop. Basically when I leveled my Rogue; every 20-25 levels I got some of the best blues I could from dungeons.

tehe, my rogue used 2 blue swords from DM all the way to lvl 38, just gave them fiery enchant and i did pretty well.. ^^

well, what i have figured out is that despite what people say, the ones selling rogue type gear (ie. of the monkey, of the bandit) for over the top prices are rather lame asses and are likely helping gold sellers and should be banned or warned.
But i have learned from playing my rogue, which is stuck at level 62 and i do mean stuck, all the mobs do more damage then me and have more health then me, i mean, my rogue has $%^&ty survivability and %^&*ty damage and i am using the best weapons i can get for my level, so i really don'ty see how dm level weapons helped you right to level 38, cause i got these weapons at level 60 and they are already crap.

This is my armoury page, the gear i have is the best that i can have at my level, at level 63, i can make:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=25668
, but i am like half a level away and quite frankly, i must honestly be doing something wrong because other rogues i have asked said that it was quite easy to level up the rogue, unless they were just saying that to make themselves look good.
I am totally lost.

@JamieK
Your gears about average for a rogue levelling through the bit of the game you are.
Just to be sure, you are using stealth, both weapons poisoned, opening with (probably) cheap shot where possible, spam sinister strike to a full 5 stack of combo points and eviscerate to finish (or kidney shot at 5 combo points and continue teh sinister spam)?
You have 3 main cooldowns for group work as well as other useful CC (crowd control).
CC:
Gouge is a short term in combat CC.
Sap is a longer term out of combat CC.
Blind is a short term in combat CC.
Cooldowns:
Blade flurry hurts a second enemy, Adrenaline Rush gives you higher damage output through more sinister spam and Evasion makes you very hard to hit for a few seconds.
There IS something you are doing wrong (sorry) rogues are a little more squishy than a lot of characters as they are light armoured melee (whereas casters in even lighter armour tend not to get hit and can generally kite big stuff).
You are spamming sinister strike? and using finishing moves when your combo points get up to full? Cos that with pretty much any weapons/gear should kill most things your level in outland, no special tricks needed.
Sorry if any of that was patronising and/or frustrating (as it's exactly what your doing) but it really SHOULD be that simple :(
Find a few video's on youtube maybe? It might spark the idea that leads you to what you are missing.

@ the OP
The prices really differ from server to server, but as my server is insanely overpriced on all lowbie gear, I can feel your pain. As the others have said, if you can get groups, do dungeons for major upgrades whenever you can. They will last you a very long time in most cases. For the gear you can't upgrade in dungeons, don't even worry about looking for upgrades until the gear you have is at least 10-15 level old. Before that point, the stat differences between pieces really won't be large enough to merit any money being spent, and in many cases, you'll get a quest upgrade sometime during those levels.
@JamieK
Sam and merc summed things up pretty well. I was combat swords throughout TBC, and the biggest mistake I made was "saving" my cooldowns. Now, for the life of me, I can't think of what I was saving them for (although at the time we needed reagents for blind and vanish), but once I learned to use them often, life got a lot easier. One suggestion I'd have is to see if you can find a faster OH weapon.
Combat Potency
isn't a normalized proc, so will benefit from more off hand attacks being made successfully. More procs = more energy = less time between specials = quicker fights. I'd also look into getting a different ranged weapon, that actually has stats that are worthwhile. Any bow, gun, or thrown weapon will do, and since you don't get
deadly throw
(and even when you do, it's not something you'll miss of you don't use it) until 64, you really have no reason to pigeon-hoe yourself into using a throwing weapon over a bow/gun that has better stats.

Finally elwood66 mentioned the answer to the OP's question.
The reason leather gear is so expensive while leveling is that most of it is used by twinks. This demand pushes the prices higher. However, demand will be somewhat lowered at level 40, since hunters and shamans will be moving away from leather gear toward mail. Nevertheless, demand by twinks will still keep the prices high. As everyone else suggested, get gear from doing quests or instances and avoid dropping huge amounts of gold on gear while leveling.

Well, for my rotation:
1: Stealth up (if possible)
2: Cheap shot enemy
3: Slice and Dice
4: Sinister Strike them to 5 combo points
5: Eviserate or Kidney Strike
Thats pretty much a 1 mob attack rotation.
Also, the leather gear i am talking about is not twink gear, it could be level 61 gear and i have seen twink gear, that gives a high figure of stamina or something at lower levels, this is a twink item for obvious reasons:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=2314
But the leather gear i am talking about is no where near worth the high prices i have seen, it doesn't give you enough of a good stat to be worth the over the top price tag.
Something like this:
19 agility
25 stamina
30 attack power
That is a 'of the bandit' item, which is ideal for rogues and feral kittys and that items was for a level 58-61, i was able to loot several from sheer luck after selling each one for a realistic price and they were all roughly the same stats, perhaps 1 more agility or 1 more stamina, but the levels were different, level 59, 60 and level 61.
So, it has nothing to do with twinks, its just greedy players that don't care how they make money, even if its over pricing vital items needed for rogues and feral druids entering outland.
Pretty pathetic really.

Well, i have just recently created a Blood Elf Rogue on ghostlands (EU) and i plan to do just what you said mpniea.
It really depends on what stats get increased, if its just spirit, not many classes want just spirit, but items like 'of the bear, monkey, eagle i will make sure are sold at realistic prices.

well, i guess the reason why i did rather well with dm lvl weapons is that i spend my money on everything but weapons..
http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Argent+Dawn&n=Avi%C3%B3n
my current swords are pretty much crap, but considering im close to outland by now, i dont have any plans on changing until i get there.
I always make sure to have the highest possible AP/stam gear i can get my hands on.
Im not much affected by the prize of items, since i always have a ton of gold on me.my rogue alone got nearly 2k.

well, i try to balance gear and weapons, but when the only thing that works for your class is worth like 10g and is being sold for 60g, it really slows you down.
