. The reason it has been attributed to the British by some is because the author later changed the name from
Crème brulée
to
Crème à l'Angloise
.
Trinity Creme, the British version, didn't come around until 1879.
French (some evidence it could have come even earlier from Spain), but ripped off by the British.

Actually, Faceshield is correct, Créme Brulée IS English, it was called Eton Mess and was ripped off by the French when they weren't busy surrendering to rocks.
Créme Brulée
and
Eton Mess
are two completely different dishes.
