What if we lose?

Someone on wow.com blogged about this possibility and I thought about it. Here's what could make for an amazing expansion.
We get to Icecrown Citadel ... and lose. We're in the raids, we beat bosses, say the scourge version of Bolvar Fordragon or Saurfang the Younger. We get all the way to the last actual boss, likely Sindragosa. After defeating Sindragosa, we get ready to tackle Arthas on Invincible. We defeat Invincible, Arthas goes into a rage and ... we can't defeat him. We have to flee. After all of the coliseum training, we still aren't strong enough. Scourge begin to dominate.
With everyone else weakening, Azshara sees this is as the perfect time to come back into the picture. She isn't afraid of Arthas. Puny human. At the same time, through some quest lines, we are called upon to rescue Malfurion Stormrage from the Emerald Dream. He is our last hope. Not just the night elves' last hope, but Azeroth's.
Azshara intends to first take her revenge on the night elves but the scourge are just in her way. Arthas has to be dealt with. Fine. Easy peasy. Except it's not. Arthas is incredibly powerful.
To defeat Arthas, it will require the combined forces of Azshara, Malfurion, Tyrande Whisperwind, and assorted heroes form the Horde and Alliance.
Towards the beginning of the expansion, there is success. Arthas is defeated. Sylvanas Windrunner gets the final blow.
Now the expansion really starts. Azshara hasn't forgotten about the night elves and they haven't forgotten her. The rest of the expansion can deal with naga vs night elves with some other random lore thrown in, maybe more on the tauren as they have hinted since much of this will have to do with Kalimdor.

I think most people who play WoW tend to think of the wars therein as consisting only of raids. They aren't. Even if a raid is unable to stop Arthas' rampage, it doesn't mean that the tens, perhaps hundreds, of thousands of troops and heroes laying siege to Icecrown Citadel will fail. People need to think of the wars in Warcraft in an military sense rather than in a "what we see ingame" sense. Just look to the armies of the Silithid War for confirmation of this.
But, say that's exactly what happens, Arthas wins. In that case, throwing Malfurion and Azshara with her Naga into the mix isn't going to change anything. Why? Because, if the combined forces of the Horde, the Alliance, the Argent Crusade, the Kirin'Tor, and the Knights of the Ebon Blade aren't enogh to stop the Lich King, then no conglomeration of forces in Azeroth would be able to stop him. He already would have destroyed most of the forces that tried to stop him before, and as such, raised himself a much much larger force than before. In this case, it would take either the power of the Titans or the Naaru themselves to stop him.
The problem with this idea is that Arthas isn't
that
powerful. If he
were
that powerful, then he would have had no problem defeating Tirion Fordring in their duel, and as such would have destroyed the Argent Dawn and the Knights of the Ebon Blade in one fell swoop. He then would have had no trouble conquering the Horde, the Alliance, and the rest of Azeroth.
Barring any intervention by Sargeras himself, which his extremely unlikely, the Lich King
will
be defeated; and by the forces that are in Northrend, fighting against him as we speak.

And if the Forsaken use's it, it will be chaos on the field as everyone turns to kill them. They may not use it on the Horde, but they sure as heck aren't going to be too choosey about whether it hits Scourge, Alliance, Argent Crusade, Ebon Blade, after all the more threats Sylvanas can take out the better in her mind.

Except, the Blight didnt really seem to affect the Lich King, yeah he walked away, but that was more to keep from being overwhelmed. More then likely he's already figured out an antidote to it, same as he did for the paralyzing poison sylvanas used on him earlier. Would be hilarious if the Forsaken's grand plan ended up failing and the Lich King just wtfpwns the Horde and laughs.

If Arthas does indeed become strong enough to totally wtfbbqroflstomppwn the combined might of just about everybody, then I say that's a perfect time for Deathwing to show up and show him who's top dog.
Afterall, Deathwing *!@#s Lich Kings.

Hey I was just saying, if the Forsaken were insane enough to use the blight again, that's what would happen lol. But yeah Deathwing vs Lich King no contest. Though I'd like to see Azshara smash him too, that would be pretty funny, see which is stronger, death magic or the magic of a !@#$ed off Queen who has had her magic for more then 15 thousand years.

This is surprisingly lore consistent. Since the night elves did blow up the world...
twice.

Well, Malfurion blew up the world twice. That seems to be his answer to everything. Hate to see what happens when he finds a stuck jar.
"Hmm, can't open this.....I KNOW!" *Massive explosion* Tyrande runs in, sees the kitchen missing, Malfurion stands there covered in soot. "Not again! Next time just use a knife!"

So sad... so true.

for me i dont want to see the lich king die favorite person in all of wow it be a shame if 10/25 people could do it noticing hes so much more powerfull than that i hope this is were they start bringing 40mans back
Yh, its lame if 25 people kill arthas. Those other 15 people are what miss in order to kill Arthas! Heh, who cares that Arthas killed thousands, if another 15 people come, he'll die!
/sarcasm off
Now, really, you
really
think that we will just go in Icecrown and tank'n'spank Arthas? Come ON. Sylvanas - Darion - Tirion. Their whole lore gravitates around the fight against Arthas. Don't get me started with the n factions that swore to kill Arthas. Everyone you meet in Northrend (except very few factions) are there to stop Arthas. What do you think, they will just forget the goal for which they worked for years and have a cup of coffe and talk about sex while 25 freakies go and kill Arthas? The whole expansion is about killing Arthas. If you think there won't be major lore involvement in that fight, then you have no idea about WoW lore at all.
Sheesh cranky butt. We're all joking and are just pondering the 'what if we ALL fail?'
Of course we aren't going to lose. This was just a thread that was toying with the idea of if we did, and what would happen.
Chill out.

Well, since this is Blizzard and most stories and tales in life revolve around how good triumphs evil in the end, that's what will probaly happen. However since it is also Blizzard, good chance a major lore character besides Arthas is going to get killed off.
/sarcasm on
I wonder what would happen if Malfurion found a stick of TnT...

Made me lol so much. *giefs interwebz*
It would be a huge anti-climax though if we all marched into Icecrown and he killed us all. However, it would also be a huge anti-climax if there were no losses on our side too.
/prays for Rhonin to die
