You can transfer unimpeded on merged accounts.
The owner info means nothing if the accounts are in the same B-net account.
Edit: You can also log on at the same time as long as you are using different WoW accounts. It should be noted that sharing a B-Net account in this manner
is
against the ToS, and may get your account suspended or banned. I find it unlikely, especially if you both live in the same general geographic area, but there's always a risk.

You can probably recover your authenticator account. I'm sure there is a method for that. Call customer support and talk to them, they're quite helpful I gather. It's almost like it's their job or something. ;)

Lots of things have changed since 2009.
The best thing anyone can do in any of these situation relating to accounts is to call Blizzard customer support. Be nice to them, and they will be nice to you and help you solve all your problems.
