So how is that supposed to work? If some dude gets angry and starts flaming everyone, it has to be okay because there can be no rules on what to say? If flaming and harassment is allowed to continue you won't have the good atmosphere. Some guilds will claim that they have no rules, but I'll bet you that they kick the worst offenders to maintain the good atmosphere and that means that they actually do have rules. If a guy gets %^&*ed off and starts flaming everyone in my current guild, he'd get mocked until he shuts up or /gquits or logs off. But that's a pretty big "if" since no one is that big of a prat to just go off like that in /g. Most people who have a grievance will actually bring it up in whispers and be mature about it, or (more likely) right click -> ignore. You're allowed to ignore guild members, you know.
Every guild has limits to what will be tolerated. Putting it in writing is just informing people what those limits are. Guild leaders may choose not to write anything down, but they still have limits, trust me, and when you overstep them you will be on wowhead complaining that you were "kicked for no reason".. That's making a lot of assumptions with absolutely no basis, you know. Don't do that.
Snipped your post a bit there. You want to be in a front runner guild, but complains about being benched for underperforming, that just doesn't add up. If the guild has the ambition to be at the top, it's leaders have to be a bit ruthless and only bring the absolute top performers. I'm aware of this, and there's a reason it's #3 on my list. It's not a huge deal to me, and I still get in on off nights, and alt runs. I think that just quietly shunting me off is a touch %^&*ish, but it's not something I'm going to /gquit over because right now I don't even know if I could make decent raid attendance for progression nights with them, what with master's classes being at night.
All in all I find your wishes in contradiction. You wont have a great guild atmosphere unless you somehow protect it, either by setting rules or by weeding out the offenders (which is also a setting of rules, just unwritten ones). You also can't expect to be in a top notch progress guild and at the same time expect them to make room for you if you're not at the top of your game. All in all I find your post to be wonderfully purposeless. Guilds can maintain a good atmosphere just by not inviting people who are retarded. The dimwits who manage to sneak through the cracks weed themselves out by getting offended and/or can't take a joke. I don't expect a guild to "make room for me", I expect them to say "hey read this/talk to X and they'll help you up your deepz because you're is lacking". It's also pretty damn difficult to be at the "top of your game" in WoW because it's 90% gear based. I run the same talents and the same rotation as the #1 lock in my guild, and the only difference is that he has more best-in-slot gear than I do.
I really don't know why you made this post at all, to be honest. I think you were just looking to pick a fight. Was it the "I refuse to join guilds who censor" part? A lot of people seem to hate the concept of not throwing a tantrum over certain words deemed "offensive" 600+ years ago.
Edit @ ShredDurst: I am going to have a talk with the guild leader and said top lock about my coming back into raiding once this semester stops trying to devour me whole.

Number one priority: I want a guild that wants me. Nothing makes me happier to be in a guild than being loved and appreciated as a guild member. Of course, I don't ask for recognition for nothing, and would be more than happy to farm this, craft that, or check for something else. However, if I am not given the opportunity to be useful or I'm not recognized for what I do, then I might start looking elsewhere for a guild that would be better off with me.
Another factor is the atmosphere of the guild. I don't like hate, and I don't like QQ, and I certainly don't like people being meanies to each other. A distand third factor would be raid progression, but I honestly don't care if I don't even get to raid with the guild, just as long as I can still be useful to them.
Edit: Oh, and I can't forget the tabard. If you don't have a guild tabard, I'm out. And also the vault, if you don't have a vault I'm also out. After all, that's what most guilds include in their advertisements! It must be really important criteria! =P
