Your in the wrong, but you took the right actions. I'm guessing you were seeking with both damage and tank flagged (otherwise its their fault for taking 2 tanks when there are gajillions of dps).Since alot of people have dual specs, the first thing i do when i'm invited on my dk is ask if i'm tanking or dpsing ( i ask this before i accept invite). If its a raid i don't need dps gear for and get asked to dps or vice versa, i also let them know that i want to need main spec on the other spec instead. And If they say ok, i'll accept invite; at the moment i join raid i will also announce to the raid as well, and ask if anyone has any problems. If not, your good to go. Occasionally people DO have problems with this, at which point i will leave as to avoid potential future problems (sometimes the RL won't tell the raid about certain pre-arranged conditions).

Anyways, long story short, make it clear very early one what your main spec is and what you want to roll on. Choose 1. If something from the spec you didnt choose drops treat it as an offspec even if thats the spec your currently using, otherwise your just a %^&*!@.

To the OP: This has already been hashed out, but I agree with what seems to be the majority. If you're in LFG as a tank but go in as DPS, you need to ask before the run starts if it's okay that you roll on tank gear. If they say no, you need to go find another group. They aren't being jerks or anything, but unless a tank is running the instance solely for emblems or rep, then they're likely going to want little to no competition on drops.

As to the second question in the thread, regarding the Resto Druid rolling on cloth: This again depends on the group. Personally, our guild has a rule that cloth goes to clothies as priority; however, there's nothing wrong in my opinion with rolling on cloth gear as an upgrade if no cloth-wearers need it. But some groups are "you only get to roll on your armor class" (which I disagree with completely), while others prescribe to the rule that "an upgrade is an upgrade, and AC means little when you shouldn't be getting hit anyway".

I personally follow these rules for any character I am using:

Write down what drops in this instance that you need for your current spec.
Write down what drops in this instance that you need for a different spec.
When the group is together, let everyone in the group know what you are interested in rolling on.

In your case, you joined as DPS but you were in tank spec and wanted tank gear. From the very beginning, you should have stated "I would like to roll need on XYZ Fancy Pants of Excellence if they drop", even though you were performing DPS.

At this time the one tanking could have said that you would both roll need on it ... or not. Then you could have decided whether you would stick with the group.

I'm not much a fan of a lot of the loot rules I've read around here (no personal offense to anyone or anyone's system). I always go into instances saying roll Need on what you need, Greed on everything else. Whatever, that's what the roll system is there for. If an item is an improvement for two people, then they have equal chance to get it, and that's the way it should be. Good luck to both of you. If you don't get your item, run it again. That's life.

First off, what many of the posters here are disregarding is you are talking about a dungeon run and not a raid. In a dungeon it's generally assumed that you roll on whatever you need that is an upgrade. In a raid you simply tell them ahead of time that you will be rolling on tank gear but coming as dps. I do this routinely.

I believe the issue this guy has is legitimate as many people seem to want to apply raid loot decorum and rules to dungeon runs. Typically, though if I am coming in as dps I do announce I am rolling on the tanking gear that I need if it drops. Most (I stress most as there are a few aholes out there) people don't care if you roll need on an item your class can use even if it's for an offspec that you will be using in the near future. Healing and tanking especially apply in this situation.

You handled it the right way, though you wasted too much time talking with them, if I find a group is unreasonable in my request I simply leave right away. Granted when I am tanking and lose out to dps it irks me with gear, but I also know that tank gear is harder to come by, and that alot of people want to tank in the future and are gathering gear for it.

Please let's stop this you came into a group as dps so you can only have dps gear, that's ignorant and selfish. Dungeons are not raids, you can do them again tomorrow if it's a heroic. If it's a normal you can farm it until you get what you need from it, but only in raids should there be an MS>OS roll.

You where not tanking it, hence you shouldnt get the tanking loot. Thats common practice, and if you want to get first dibs on tanking loot, tank your own instance.

There are few more irritating things in the world (of warcraft) than tanking for some "dps" (going as dps, but doing lower dps than tank) Jenkinsknight that will press need and win on that special AN trinket you´ve been after for 12 runs.

I can only think of one more thing that is more irritating, retJenkinspallys that will need on healer gear aswell as tanking gear, while being $%^&ed when they lose rolls on dps gear to the other dpsers.

And then when the same gear doesn't drop for the next 15 times through the place?

There are a few items that are ~~must have~~ highly desired that drop from dungeons for pre-raid gear sets.

One such example is Essence of Gossamer. I got lucky and ran H-AN and got it to drop on my first time as tank; our guild's main tank ran it 34 times (no exaggeration) before he got it - save on his 5th time through where it dropped and a pugged DK (who had, at the start, claimed he was only interested in DPS gear) won the roll on it.

So suffice to say, I disagree with you. Loot rules don't have to be universal, but I see no need to have separate rules for instances and raids.

As a note: From that point on until he got the drop he ran H-AN with Master Looter on. Can't blame him.

That trinket is easily replaced by the time you are raiding and is not all that great to begin with. Heck I tank raids all the time and never even thought of that trinket. I thought it was a pretty lame pvp trinket. 111 stamina is nice, but the shield is rather weak, and there are better avoidance trinkets out there to set off and farm for a stam trinket seems kind of weak reason to get mad at some one.

Heck, last time I saw that drop I let the entire group roll on it for pvp purposes, which made the warrior dps who wanted for his tank gear a bit perturbed, but the truth is that's a rather weak trinket, that I don't see the big hubub about. I can't think of one piece of gear in a single heroic that is a must have that you can't pick up an equal or substitute from another place without it turning into a big giant cry fest.

This whole conversation reeks of the new habit of reserving gear for raids, which in my opinion is the most selfish and horrible new habits forming in WoW raiding patterns.

BTW, if some moron put master loot on in a heroic I would leave the group, and any sensible runner would do the same. There is a difference in being disagreeable and unreasonable. Disagreeing with me is saying you don't see why, but allowing it. Unreasonable is saying I am an idiot for doing it.

Main spec roll generally refers to what you are doing at the time the boss is killed. If you're dps then your main spec roll is dps. If you are tank, then you roll as a tank. This is all subject to change if you agree to other loot rules before the encounter. If you join as a dps but chose to only roll for tank gear, let the group know before hand. They may talk you out of it or not really care. Communication is key, so don't just assume something.

Based on the weight scales used for stats here on Wowhead, (which appears to be the same one used by Elitist Jerks), this is the third-best trinket for Protection Paladins, the second best for Protection Warriors, and the fifth-best for Feral Druid tanks, currently available from a heroic - including raids up to Ulduar. DK is the only tank class that doesn't rank it in the top 5.

That may not the be-all, end-all - but I wholly disagree that there are better trinkets you can get from pre-raid runs outside of this, assuming that you are already defense-capped. In this case, the numbers actually point to this being one of the best trinkets you can get even up to the current "end game" 10-man content.

I was explaining what I meant by unreasonable, not stating you called me one. Your point is taken, but your link shows spell power and hit trinkets, which I am not sure is even necessary though I am not a paladin nor do I wish to be one.
As for weight scales, we must keep in mind that they are general and not based on gear that you have. If you are defense capped through gear and need stam than you can trinket for it. You can trinket for threat or for mitigation or avoidance. Weight Scales are very general, and can change based on what gear you have at a given time.

I do know there is a badge one which is better for avoidance, and the defense trinket out of HOL is one of the best out there.
