Having played the demo, I'm fairly content with the changes that have been made to the franchise. Hawke's voice acting is good, and I like the fact that auto-attacks aren't so bland anymore. The one thing that could use some work (and TB agrees with me) is the camera.
Having played the demo about 20 times, I've decided to play a rogue first play through. I would have gone mage, but then Bethany dies, and Carver seems a bit bland compared to her.
My tentative party set-up is
Avaline - tank
Bethany - AoE
Me - single target and CC
and then one of these three depending on the situation
Merrel - if healing is needed
Varric - more AoE
Isabela - more single target damage
What do you think of the game and what are your plans?
How the *!@# did this get in general?(##RESPBREAK##)524##DELIM##Neutronimity##DELIM##

Love it so far, especially the mage and rogue (lol that's just two thirds of the classes) come across as better than in the first. Warrior still feels a bit dull (yes, i thought the Warrior, especially Sword and Shield ones to be dull in DA 1)
I definetly plan to get the game installed as soon as i can on Thursday, set it up and play it until it's finished. Then replay it while taking a closer look on the lore.

I don't like the whole "dark fantasy" milieu. It's nothing more than throwing maroon splotches on the screen and going "Look, new genre!"
Bioware never claimed it was a new genre. In fact, it was purposefully in the same genre as previous games it was modeled after (e.g. Baldur's Gate).
And I don't understand why more combat is a bad thing. Combat is exactly what you level up and gear for.

From the Makers of Mass Effect comes the Dark Fantasy Epic
Directly from their website @
http://dragonage.bioware.com/dao/game/
Yes, they are in fact claiming it's a new genre something they have consistently claimed since beta.
All that sentence says is that it's a different genre than Mass Effect.
"From the makes of Warcraft III comes the MMO..." doesn't mean that they're trying to invent a new genre any more than this does.

"Dark Fantasy Epic" means just that. It's a swords and sorcery (fantasy) game with a complex and apocalyptic story (epic) that isn't all happy fun time and rainbows (dark). At least that's how I interpret the phrase, more or less. I'm pretty sure that's already an established sub-genre of Fantasy RPG too.
Also, Pitch Black was pitch as a "Sci-Fi Action Thiller".

Actually, in general usage, "sword and sorcery" is used to cover roughly the opposite side of the spectrum from epic fantasy. I believe here Epic is referring to the scope (the fate of the world) as opposed to sword and sorcery (more down to earth and perhaps realistic), and Dark is referring to the issue of good and evil (morally ambiguous) as opposed to High fantasy (clear dichotomy of good and evil).

You might be going a little too far here. The definitions of those terms are not set in stone, therefore they are kinda relative. And i do doubt that BioWare checked any sort of a dictionary to find out the most fitting adjectives to advertise their game. It's simply labeled as "epic dark fantasy", and if you want a deeper info about what the game is, you have to look deeper.
By the way, i didn't really find Dragon Age: Origins dark. Sure there was a looooooot of blood and gore, but that does not make a fantasy dark. In Dragon Age: Origins the hero was actually dispersing rainbows in every direction, transforming everything into utopia, and encountering uncorrupt, honest, kind and open-minded NPC's. When there was someone who was going to betray you, you knew it as soon as you saw his first lines (seriously, who didn't expect Loghain?), and the amount of people that were reserved in relation to the Grey Warden was drastically smaller than the amount of NPC's that simply came to you and spilled out all their secrets and life stories and rumours and info and quests... for free. Heck, even the Denerim town guard leader was not corrupt. That's just... bad. DA:O was simply a fantasy with rainbows and butterflies where sometimes four characters chatted people up
covered in blood
from head to toe. Oh joy.
Anyway, i still found DA:O a good game. It just wasn't as dark as advertised, and i believe DA2 is not going to be dark either. BioWare are kinda missing the point when they think it's only about raw violence.
So, you people already have decided about your party members? :X I would kinda like to try a tank Hawke, since there is a pretty shield coming with the pre-ordered copy. I will probably get Anders, cause he seems like an interesting character (i did not play Awakening, whoops... but i know he was there), and Varric, cause he looks pretty cool and he has a crossbow that he has invented. Does this remind me of any
BioWare NPC maybe
? Oh yes it does, and it's a good thing. I am not very excited about Isabella and Aveline, and the fact that i will not be able to alter their costumes in any way does not help at all. The lyrium imbued guy looks interesting, hope he will not have an antivan or orlaisian accent. Well, i will probably be deciding on the go, and probably also shifting my characters around a bit to try different tactics.

They aren't in the dictionary. They're terms used by the science-fiction/fantasy community to help categorize works. I'm merely stating what those terms mean in such a context

Exactly, you just took dark to mean something that isn't the usually meaning within the context of fantasy. As I said, dark usually describes a
moral
state, as opposed to a physical one.

All DLC should be usable on NPCs too, so no matter who is tanking, it won't go to waste.

Agreed, while the whole Zombieish (obviously talking about the Darkspawn) is supposed to make the game more "dark", all it does it turn it into more of a Hack n' Slash game. However, i found DAO: Awakening to achieve the
moral
dark alot better, despite being an so-so expansion.

Warriors don't dual-wield.

I'm not 100% certain on this but it seems that attacks function in arcs and different weapons and abilities have different arc ranges so in theory your sword attack could harm 2 or more darkspawn if their close enough to each other, but like I said im not 100% certain on this.
Auto-attacks for 2-handers are sweeping, but not special attacks (unless they are specifically AoE of course).
