Crit is not better than mp5, it has been stated that its value has dropped, but still its not a good idea to avoid it. 35% holy crit unbuffed seems just the around ideal for balance between crit-mp5.

I've never tried math for this before so I might mess up.
Off the top of head, I think FoL costs 307 mana, which means on a crit you'd get 92 mana back. So assuming FoL spam, with 100% crit and no haste that comes out to 300 mp5. So then 1% = 3 mp5 (which increases with haste), or ~46 crit rating.
Holy Light is 1274 mana, which means on a crit you'd get 382 mana back. So assuming HL spam with 100% crit and no haste that comes out to 764 mp5, so then 1% = 7.6 mp5.
So depending on what your casting
46 crit rating = 3-7.5 mp5 (as far as pure mana regen is concerned)

Not being a holy paladin, but I was under the impression that crits are important not just for mana recovery, but simply for the healing?
The fact that it offsets MP5 by less than it used to is simply a rebalancing issue - balancing longevity (mana recovery) and healing ability, I would have thought. There's a pretty huge gap between 35% and 50% crit.

Why not just stack int? Solves all problems on its own ;)

The PROBLEM here is that this equation requires constant casting.

You shouldn't have mana problems if you're not constantly casting.

Of course. Because you have mp5.
If you are constantly casting, then the equation fits and crit if good. If you have gaps in between casts, the mp5 benefits you both during the gaps and during the casts. And dont try to tell me that healing = standing and spamming heals (and with no lags or reaction times).

No, if you're not continually casting Divine Plea is more than enough. And just because you can't react fast enough in between casts doesn't mean nobody else can. Get used to your lag and start casting a bit before your first one is done.

I honestly though that crit/mp5 discussions will end with nerf of crit giving 30% mana back from the BC 60%, where crit was king.
Well, I will just stay with my opinion that crit is better only in ideal mathematical situation.

I think you missed the point of my calculations...crit doesn't even come close to comparing with mp5 when it comes to regen. It takes 4 crit gems to match 1 mp5 gem. Crit is a "throughput" stat with a small mana-regen bonus.

Yes, I probably did.
So what is the holy crit you aim for? With 35% unbuffed you get to some 45% holy light/shock crit. Need more?

All I stack is intellect. But that will only save you a few casts before going low.
It's mainly the gear that comes. One has mp5 and one has crit. Some have crit an mp5, but most have either more crit or more mp5.
I just find mp5 to be a lot better. I don't do the math though.
You're not seriously stacking int if you're still less than 20k mana unbuffed. Heck if you're less than 22k mana even. If you have crit gems currently, replace them with int. Right now, with as much crit as you have, you could spec into the Prot tree instead of the ret tree and be at a proper amount of crit. If you still have that much crit and you are already in the Prot tree, then you're definitely gemming for crit when you shouldn't.

See... everyone here agree's that Crit is not the same kind of mana regen as it used to be, and that Mp5 is much better. But the part you're forgetting is that a Crit is double your heal. You seriously don't want your heals to hit twice as hard? I know I do...
My priority still goes: Int>Crit>SP>Mp5>Haste.
If I could always count on my heals critting when it saves a tank's life as opposed to being useless overheal, I'd prefer crit to everything but intellect, as well.

It was 100% in BC.
Also, even in BC, crit became what it was because of Holy Light spam for Sunwell. The holy guides back in BC still said mp5 was a valid stat for FoL spam since Illumination/crit favors HL spam. And it
still applies. Crit is a throughput stat as much as it is regen at this point.
