Sooooo, yeah. Not new to healing (Main is holy/disc priest), but I'm just wondering how I should be going about tank healing as a Pally.
During an Ony25, I just found myself spamming FoL and HS on the tank, and that kept him up fine. Never really saw a need to use Holy Light...ever.
But I can see times where spamming a big heal would be necessary. IE, phase 3 of Iron Council hardmode, Phase 2 Algalon, ect. Times where I know the tank's gonna be taking big hits.

The one thing you should
never
do, is pidgeonhole yourself into a single playstyle. Yes, there will be times when you can get by with FoL and HS, but during the same fight, you might need to throw out some HLs. Don't corner yourself into thinking that 'this is phase one, so I'm using this heal only, gonna break out the big guns in phase two'.
So...what you're saying is, knowing when the tank is going to be taking big damage is a BAD thing? I don't understand. The tank isn't just going to take a random huge spike of damage (unless he's under the defense cap, in which, I'd be out of that group like a fat kid in dodgeball.) so I don't see your point. What I usually do is just spam FoL and if the tank's health dips, use HS and Holy Light right after, then keep up the FoL spam.
A good way to heal is to, first of all, look at
yourself
, your mana pool, your SP, your regen, and see roughly how long you can spam your heals for.
I can spam Holy Light for about...a minute to a minute and a half. =/ Whereas Flash of Light I can keep spamming throughout the entire fight and have no mana problems.
After all that's considered and the fighting's begun, look at your raid frames, see who needs healing, and
prioritize
, fight mechanics > tanks > healers > dps.
I'm tank healing...going to be spamming on the tanks the whole time...with the exception of throwing out a HS or FoL to someone if they're low. Also, are you contradicting yourself on what you said earlier? Knowing when the tank is going to be taking damage is bad, but I need to know anyways?
Probably the most difficult part is putting it all together on the fly (when you have unfamiliar fights, parties, and whatnot), and that comes with experience, there's no way out of it. You just got to keep healing and healing until you can get a feel for what your mana pool can handle, what your group can handle, what your tank can handle, and do it all within a reasonable amount time so you can avoid getting people killed.
I know every fight in WOTLK, so "unfamiliar fights" isn't a problem. Like I said, I'm not a newbie to healing, I'm just wondering when I should be using Holy Light.

If it's a fight that isn't moving around too much, why aren't you putting Beacon on the tank, and helping take responsibility for healing the melee DPS?

Let Onyxia be. Its a super easy encounter, especialy with more than 3 healers.
Go heal Gormok in ToGC and see if you can heal with FoL when the tank has 3 stacks of the DoT and still taking direct hits.
Generaly speaking, if you can live with FoL, your raid has more healers than necessary, for they must be obviously bored to death. In the moment when you down the boss with all CDs away and almost zero mana, only then you can politely ask to add more heals for the raid (unless most of the dmg came from avoidable sources).

When the fight needs a tank to be fully healed in less than two GCDs. The only fights that will do to a raid in 245 gear are in ToGC 25.
It's about scaling back and forth between the two as cooldowns are active. Tank cooldowns, your output cooldowns, and even boss cooldowns fall into that. Of course we're not meant to spam Holy Light for a whole fight, there are lulls, but (in big contrast from TBC) the worst thing you can possibly do is /stopcasting. Flash of Light is a very expendable heal, it can be used to perfectly fill the gaps in bigger damage the tank will see, without forcing you to stop healing entirely.

Just using FoL and HS is fine if it works, but it means you're doing things that aren't challenging for you.
Check out the link in my signature if you haven't already; it might help some.

(Basically, he's saying to just be ready to toss out both of your heals, because ^&*! happens)
This is...pretty much what I do, regardless of what I'm healing. Even when healing Heroics, I just don't often use Holy Light, because FoL/HS spam around the group + Beacon keeps the tank up.
My gear isn't the best (A mix of 200, 219, and 232), but I've managed to heal all of the normal 10mans (excl. Naxx/Uld) and didn't really have a problem. This paladin is also my alt, and on top of that, Holy is his offspec, so of course his gear is going to be crap.
WoW-Heroes. I know the Libram is a tanking one. Yes, I still need to enchant some things.
I can easily get gear from ToC10 normal though, because nobody in my 10man group needs it, so I can just bring my pally for free loot. Better than it getting d/e'd. (His tank set is good enough for ToC25.)
But yeah, like I said at the beginning, it's not like I NEVER use Holy Light, I only use it when the tank's HP dips, or when I know he's about to take a big hit(s).

Then you're using it at the right time. As long as the tank stays alive, you're doing fine (or being carried, but we'll give you the benefit of the doubt).

Now you cut that out with the "being carried" crap. =P In that Ony25, I was below to the 2 resto druids on healing meter, and there was a Holy priest in the group, too, and I managed to outheal him.
Never had any problems with tanks staying alive.
