You do not understand what "mandatory" means or your logic is flawed. The fact that something is substantial desn't also mean that you must have it, if you care about the typical action adventuring nature of Skyrim. This DLC is also clearly nowhere near to a "long wait" from the last one.
Ok your obviously not getting what Im saying here so Im just going to re-explain the whole thing.
When Oblivion came out Bethesda released a bunch of mini DLC just like this one. Where you get a house or layer or fortress or something (Battlethorn Castle, Deepscorn Hollow, etc.), and you get to build it and clean it up. Literally the exact same thing as this one. Fans got annoyed by the fact that they had to pay for a bunch of useless crap if they wanted the full experience of the game.
Bethesda said that for Skyrim they would not be doing this. That any miniature addons like this would be tacked on to larger DLC bundles. Hell they even said that DLC like Knights of the Nine and the Fallout DLC would be smaller than what their doing for Skyrim, it would be more like Shivering Isles and the Morrowind expansions.

NO, THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO. NOBODY is forcing you to pay for !@#$ that you do not want, that is your/their own stupidity telling you that you have to own everything with the Skyrim label on it, for Christs sake! If you play Skyrim for the thrill of adventure and monsters and killing and levelling up and whatever, WHY DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE FORCED TO SPEND MONEY ON A GLORIFIED HOUSE MOD. Look at this #$%^ing
train simulator
, it has
111 DLC
packs that cost
1517,44€
total, would you also feel forced to pay for all of them? You are given a choice if you want to spend money on the DLC or not. It is
optional
. Hell, if it sells bad, Bethesda might shy away from making more of them in the future, but guess what, it is gonna sell great, same as the Oblivion DLC, and guess what it means.
Bethesda said that for Skyrim they would not be doing this. That any miniature addons like this would be tacked on to larger DLC bundles. First of all, I would dare you to try to make a mod like this in the mod kit if you think making an in-game editor where you can drag and drop house segments is "miniature". I've done enough in the mod kit to know that what Bethesda made is a stunt that required quite a bit of script extending, and if they didn't come with a system like that themselves, nobody else would have tried, probably. That editor is leagues far from what modders normally do. Also, nobody knows how deep will the adoption system be.
Either way, they made what they made, and it is quite possible that they feel this DLC is a lot deeper than the players do. They might have kept their "promise" or they might have broken it. The fact that they made Hearthfire does not mean that they will not be making any other epic DLC packs in the future. What is the point of ^&*!@ing about Bethesda when they are still the guys that made one of the most played and praised western RPGs of the recent times.
I don't think I spoiled anything major
You're not even the protagonist, Martin is
Go to hell rankkorr. I do not think you are capable of telling what is and what isn't a spoiler at all. Dude says he JUST got Oblivion, and instead of telling him like, a few positive, encouraging things, you go and start throwing PLOT DETAILS around like flower petals. What if he didn't even know that the Emperor dies in the first 10 minutes of gameplay? What does it matter that something happens very early in the game, when it is a plot twist? When is something sufficiently far in the game to warrant itself as a spoiler in your opinion? Don't you think you are being an ass when you yourself judge what is far enough and what isn't, and freely spoil any plot twist that, in your opinion, is not far enough?

Go to hell rankkorr.
o_O why the hostile attitude? I thought we were friends bro'.
I do not think you are capable of telling what is and what isn't a spoiler at all.
Could you please explain (in spoilerbox) how in heavens name that is a spoiler? I didn't said who is martin, I dind't said what happens to him, I didn't said any details, any plot twists, anything at all. For someone who's fairly new to the game, what happens at the ending (Something I didn't spoiled) will still be a surprise.
Dude says he JUST got Oblivion, and instead of telling him like, a few positive, encouraging things, you go and start throwing PLOT DETAILS around like flower petals.
I did said encouraging things, I said that the secondary campaigns are far more interesting, specially thieves guild and dark brotherhood because on the main campaign, you are not the focus of the story. HOW IN HEAVENS NAME IS THAT AN "OMGWTF Spoiler"? I said the secondary campaigns are better. In my opinion of course.
What plot details did I threw?
What if he didn't even know that the Emperor dies in the first 10 minutes of gameplay? What does it matter that something happens very early in the game, when it is a plot twist?
the fate of the emperor not only happens within the first 10 minutes, ITS WRITTEN ON THE BACK OF THE GOD-DAMNED BOX!. Honestly, how could that be a "plot twist". That's like watching the planet of the apes without knowing that he was on earth all along, or watching Empire Strikes back without knowing that vader is luke's father.
When is something sufficiently far in the game to warrant itself as a spoiler in your opinion?
Something that happens in the middle of the game, or the end of the game, any particularly cleverly hidden plot twist (come on, if you can see it a mile away, its not really a plot twist at all, did you honestly got surprised on "Dark Messiah" to know that you were the villain's son? the very trailer spoiled that one). Specially the ending. Spoiling endings isn't fun. I don't think anything I said even remotely spoils the ending of ANY of the campaigns of oblivion. I said Martin was the focus of it, but that hardly reveals anything about him, or anything about what he do (or rather, sends you to do, but whatever) or about his fate, or about anything.
Don't you think you are being an ass when you yourself judge what is far enough and what isn't, and freely spoil any plot twist that, in your opinion, is not far enough?
No, and frankly I'm hurt that you would say such a thing when I only spoiled something that is already spoiled on the trailer, on the intro cinematic ("
I am Uriel Septim, this are the closing days of the Third Era, and the final hours of my life
") and ON THE ART BEHIND THE BOX OF THE FRIKKING GAME!.
Over-reaction rings any bells at all?
Good God.

Why's it getting all tense in here people? We're all friends, it's just a game. I can get Assault Rife Bunny if he's needed, but we should all just be able to hug it out.

I said people are forced to pay for it
IF THEY WANT THE FULL EXPERIENCE OF THE GAME
. Yes obviously nobody is forced at gunpoint to buy this, but if people want to do everything there is to do in Skyrim, then they have to pay for every DLC bundle tht comes out.
blub blub blub
Yes plz keep repeating yourself, you left a paragraph rant over a sentance you misread. Fix your comprehension skills, I said people are forced to pay twice if they want every DLC, rather than just the single payment they would have spent had Bethesda included this with Dawnguard or their next expansion.
First of all, I would dare you to try to make a mod like this
I neither have the resources, nor the technical experitse that a massive gaming company like bethesda has. Do you relise how stupid that sounded? Challenging a fan to create content on par with what a whole team of experts does?
and it is quite possible that they feel this DLC is a lot deeper than the players do.
They dont. this may be a bit more in dpeth than *!@# like Battlethorn Castle, but they promised th DLC bundls would be more substancial than Fallout, this isnt even close.
The fact that they made Hearthfire does not mean that they will not be making any other epic DLC packs in the future. What is the point of ^&*!@ing about Bethesda when they are still the guys that made one of the most played and praised western RPGs of the recent times
So just because a company is by and large "good" dont complain when they $%^& up? Ok heres two big reasons why people should @#$%^ about this.
1) Playstation 3 users dont even have a release date for Dawnguard yet. Dont pretend you wouldnt be tearing your hair out if you didnt have a PC.
2) People now have to spend money on this overglorified mod,
and
the next DLC. Which is the same thing that happened with all the Oblivion addons. The difference being that Bethesda made the fans a promise that they would be tacking on stupid little things like that to full expansions. And yes if a company breaks a promise like that the fans absolutley have the right to $%^&*.
So you can stop being their freaking advocate now.

Oblivions been out for like 6 years now, I think teh time to be sensitive about spoilers is long passed.
What if he didn't even know that the Emperor dies in the first 10 minutes of gameplay? What does it matter that something happens very early in the game, when it is a plot twist? When is something sufficiently far in the game to warrant itself as a spoiler in your opinion?
The Emperors death isnt a plot twist, its the opening incident that sets the tone for the entire game. Thats like saying that Harry Potters parents die is a spoiler, you find out right at the begining.
It says on the back of the box that your on a quest to find the Emperors lost heir. Hell in the Oblivion
trailer
it has Uriel Spetim saying "these are the closing days of the third era, and the final hours of my life".
When is something sufficiently far in the game to warrant itself as a spoiler in your opinion?
How about past the tutorial?

I heard it's worse on PC actually : /
LIES AND SLANDER ALL OF IT
I have it on PC, and have never had anything of that happen. Even if it did, on the PC you can back up your saves, you can download fan-made patches to fix the bugs, and you can download mods to enhance the game.

I enjoy the heck out of it on PC- you can always back up your saves on a PC, too.
I have had minimal crashing issues on PC, and I blame the ones I do have on the fact that I run like 45 mods at a time. I don't know a whole lot of people who way it's "An unpolished mess of a game." Everyone I know was thrilled with it. But all the people I know play on PC, so maybe the experience is different on other platforms.

Why not return it and get a new copy?

Again sold, just return it, get another game, and then buy it on PC.
not only the loading screens are split-second fast on the PC, the game is much more polished, you can back up your saves, the glitches are far fewer, and the game can be modified to enhance it.
Just get it on PC and enjoy skyrim as its meant to be enjoyed.

I prefer consoles to pcs, especially with open world RPG games like Skyrim, every system has its advantages and disadvantages though. Xbox users have the smoothest out of the box version of the game, and get DLC a month before anybody else, but they dont get the fixes for the bugs they do have, and dont have the graphics of a PS3.
PS3 users with the right tv get the best graphics out of all three options. But they also have the most bugs, and are truly the red headed step child in terms of DLC release, they dont even have Dawnguard yet.
PC users have fan made patches to fix bugs, as well as all kinds of mods. But the wrong type of computer wont be able to handle it, and anything but the top of the line gaming PCs wont be on par with consol graphics. You also have to deal with keyboard controls, but some people do prefer that (im not one of them).

Fair enough. Though personally, I prefer PCs over consoles. Only reason I'd get a console game is if its never gonna be released on PC (coughmetalgearsolid4cough).
every system has its advantages and disadvantages though
This is very true though, I can think of a couple of advantages that consoles have over PCs.
But the wrong type of computer wont be able to handle it
My pc is very outdated, I barely have 2gb of ram, and a busted up nearly 6 years old video card at 500mb of memory. My PC can still run skyrim just fine, split-second loading screens, no slow FPS, no crashes, nada.
and anything but the top of the line gaming PCs wont be on par with consol graphics.
I can't deny this. And yet Skyrim is just that type of game that even on min settings still looks gorgeous. I know I play with everything on min, and the game still looks absurdly good.
You also have to deal with keyboard controls, but some people do prefer that (im not one of them).
I do. I really hate having to aim with those sticks. I prefer my mouse any day of the week. I also prefer it when I get a key assigned to each function as opposed to 1 key doing everything (Which is an unfortunate sideeffect of controllers having less than 20 keys)
But as you said, that's also a matter of presonal preference. My cousin is the exact opposite of me, and vastly prefers a controller than a keyboard, to the point he bought an adapter to hook his Xbox controller to his PC.

I'm downloading Skyrim to my new laptop. I'll report back on how well it runs.
Edit: Well apparently it took a good 2 seconds to load a new game and it recommended Ultra High settings (I have yet to update my graphics card)

So Rank, I was playing through Fallout again earlier and I was thinking, you think its possible that the Courier and the Lone Wanderer from F3 might be the same person?
