Well I love playing my Ret Paladin. I leveled him from 1 to 80 and don't plan on giving up on him any time soon.
When dual specs came out I took the Protection Spec and lost 1000 G to do it. I don't know the first thing about tanking but I have a semi-decent set of tanking armor I have acrued over the last several weeks. But I do not want to tank. The guild I am in wants me to and I guess I will need to learn how.
Healing is boring to me and I have nothing but respect to those that want to heal. I do NOT.
In a way I wish Bliz had never offered Dual Spec because it will force me to learn a role I do not want to learn. But oh well if I want to stay in the guild I am in I guess I don't have much of a choice.
Who pays the $15 a month to Blizzard? You do. Don't let other people pressure you into playing the game in a way that is less enjoyable to you. If they persist, find another guild in my opinion.
People that try and force their beliefs on other people in WoW are ridiculous. Play the way you want to play... it's supposed to be a "game".

Dual Spec isn't the problem here... it's your guild.
If you don't want to be DPS, then don't. Find somewhere else to do what you enjoy.
^This
The "this is my 15$ a month" argument is just pathetic by now in my oppinion. It's your 15$ but that doesnt mean you can mess with other peoples 15$. And if you swear by that i'm pretty sure you weren't playing in vanilla were 39 ppl waiting for you wouldn't accept "it's my 15$".
Honestly if the guild is asking you to assume two roles. Then talk with the officer/GM that asks you to and try to reason with them. Sure it's their right to ask you but it's also your right to say no.
If they're insisting on you taking two roles. Give them some wierd reason about how you need two different prot builds to be a more versatile tank.
Tell them that you're going to be that much better of a tank if you can have two builds for tanking for different bosses.
And honestly it's more than reasonable to have two tanking builds as a paladin. Every fight is different from the other.
Even if how you act in the game affects other people it's still a game and you should be allowed to enjoy it.

My thoughts on this is:
Use your 2nd spec for a PVP-build? Or atleast claim it to be a pvp-build if you want to use it for a daily's-build.
Maybe a bit devious, but i think your guild should respect you wanting to PVP once in a while.

(This could probably be in the general section, but honestly I play a paladin... so...)
Well I'm now after a long career of tanking (and formerly being the MT/progression tank of the guild (was consuming to much time, I withdrew down to a casual raider)) with 3.1 and duel specs... one of the officers has recommended I now get a second set to be "more versatile" /puke
First off, I hate the term "Hybrid class". It's demeaning and insulting. (Look at all the healers... all are "hybrid classes"... ) But I'm not gonna get into details on that.
The fact that I play a class that can fulfill 3/4 rolls (I split DPS into melee/range)... doesn't mean I want to! I love tanking. It's what I do best. I already know I blow as a healer (i get bored, fast... and start finding cleaver ways to use my G15 keyboard... ) and frankly ret doesn't seem like it's that interesting (at least from my PoV). But here I am, slowly being fed gear for ret (gear from 10mans noone wants).
So any of my pally brothers run into the same issue with your guild? You like what you do, kinda just wanna do that... but because the ability to swap is so available, they want you to cover more roles...
Personally, I saw this coming and looked at it with a grimace.
Show them how bad you are at dpsing, or just plain out say no thanks i'm a tank i want to tank tanking is my job and if you don't like it i will go to one of those other 3000 guilds that do want a tank.
At the end of the day you pay for enjoyment (except those weird people who lv and sell accounts on ebay (although they must get some enjoyment from it too)) so play how you enjoy it.
