ruleofthumb
Do:
-Have a creative backstory.
-Have a personality planned for your character.
-Join RP guilds. Most welcome newcomer RPers.
Don't:
-Be a stereotype. (Massive scars, to include ones on the face, last of the family, etc. Unless you can think of a creative way to implement it.)
-Be a 'superweapon'. (Meaning you have killed 20 enemies with one blow. Destroyed towns with a snap of a finger, etc)
-Be a relative/friend of a major character. A relative or friend of a NPCs are fine, for example the brother of the snake vendor in Orgrimmar. Not a major character, and it could be believable.

Hmm... basic suggestions for joining a Roleplaying server?
When discussing anything in the Real World outside the game setting, including the game mechanics and such, keep in in non-spatial channels. That is to say, away from /say, /yell, and /emote. Technically Blizzard's rules also say to keep it away from /party as well, 'though /raid is fine.
Keep your character's background
simple
in the beginning. The farther you stray from "the norm" for your visible race/class combination, the harder it will be for others to know how to interact with you. Watch the opening cinematic for your chosen race. Then watch it again. Play to those stereotypes, for the most part. They are there for a good reason. They help ground the character in the setting, and they help other players have "cues" regarding how to interact with your character.
Don't assume everyone uses a "flag" addon, and keep yours brief and simple. Your character's appearance should be essentially the same as the "avatar" other players see on their computer screens. Assuming "well, I can just explain my wings/decomposed left arm/glowing red eyes in my addon" causes confusion when many if not most roleplayers still don't use those addons. You also then assume that everyone who does have said addons will take the time to read them for every character they see. On a related note, keep those "flags" brief. Reading through four pages of character history just to be able to find out whether a character favours a recently injured shoulder is more than most players will undertake. I aim for three or four sentences at
most
in a "flag" description.
Don't assume that everyone on a roleplaying server ignores character levels - level two "great gladiators" may need to prove themselves in PvP as well, after all. Many players may disregard character combat level as an inconventience , but many also take it for what Blizz uses it to be: a measure of a character's COMBAT skills. Note that this has no bearing on basketweaving, poetry composition, or even in many cases professional skill levels .
Don't assume that everyone quests and adventures in character. This one is odd, and I admit that I do not entirely understand the impetus to play on a roleplaying server and spending one's time
not
roleplaying . Still, seeing someone on a Roleplaying server does not necessitate that they are currently roleplaying, even if they are normally a roleplayer.
Whew! Hope at least some of that was helpful.
