Don't ever let what people "want" dictate what you wish to do.
I will say this, mage's right now a very solid, but to me, they had the steepest learning curve. You will -LOATHE- the total and utter stomping you will get as a mage as you learn how to control the fight and make your opponent dance to your whims.
If you want a 'spoonfed' choice. I say go elemental shaman. Less gear competition from heroics as you gear up for PvP, and you're feeding your "second spec" in a sense with caster gear also.

Imo Ele Sham or any spec of Lock. Ele in PvP is just simple burst, while the Warlocks take different skill and play styles depending on spec. Really though, choose what you'd think would be the most fun.

My main is a druid. In TBC I was Moonkin all the way, but in Wrath I've gone feral cause Moonkin is so very very difficult to PvP well with and I'll be the first to omit that I don't have leet skillz. The Moonkin's main fault is while their damage output can be scary, it can be very difficult to carry out damaging as you are being CC'd, feared, and stun-locked to death. The Moonkin armor doesn't mean much any more as a lot of melee PvP'ers stack ArPen and against other casters it is moot.
I've rolled a Shadow Priest and level'd him to just over 60. This was back in 3.1. With all the tools like Silence and Psychic Horror, I thought it would be easier to PvP with. However, in my experience it always seemed like these abilities were on cooldown when I needed them most. Melee jump on you very quickly, so you're likely to panic a bit and go Dispersion right away. Then you try and stack your DoTs while melee are just hammering you and you've basically have no chance to survive long enough for your DoTs to sink in before you are put down. I even tried a Shadow Priest on the 3.2 PTR with all the PvP gear, and it felt the same.
I haven't rolled an Elemental Shaman as of yet, and I am very curious about giving this a try. I too want to play a hybrid caster class, cause honestly I bore of being just a Hunter, Mage, or Lock.
I'd like to hear more opinions from Shadow Priests now that 3.3 has hit and Elemental Shamans.

Marksman hunters are looking pretty strong. Plus scale better, and since a whole new load of easy access gears come out things are even better now.
