Heavily populated pages
are
moderated (example time lost protodrake), other than that, there are too many comments per day for the mods to take care of.

After reading all these replies, I do agree that maybe some sort of flagging system for serial downrankers/uprankers would work well, but I have no idea whether that's feasible or not. In a way, the comments here are similar to Slashdot, in that it's user-moderated, but it doesn't have the reputation component.
I generally don't mind if comments are deleted for the sake of streamlining a discussion, or reducing the signal-to-noise ratio in a particular thread.
But in the OP, I was mostly referring to those well-written, extremely helpful posts that offer either unique information, or an easier way for fellow players to achieve an objective.
Problem is, so many people have their egos tied into this game, so if someone sees a post they don't like, they downrank it.
Ultimately I think we could find a way to reduce signal-to-noise ratio without including helpful posts as collateral damage.

You could always collect all the useful information from the page and condense it to one comment, and probably credit the sources.
That is, if you don't mind using up time to do so.

What I don't understand though is that some questions on pages like "how does this X spell effect ___" and someone follows up with the answer. However, then that original comment gets down ranked into oblivion and then erased off the page. It's nice to have the question not down rated then the reply under it. Saves people searching.
Trolling in the Feedback forum is not recommended kiddie :)
Hyperspacerebel is correct however, I don't see how he was trolling. Replies should be written in a manner that includes the question in a complete and factual manner so that the original can be purged.
Mods should browse popular pages and keep them clean. Chain comments of "I got it on my 2nd try" - "it never drops" etc don't need to be on pages at all.
I clear these when I find them, but there are a ton of comments here. If you find them, report them.

I feel like if I reported every one of these I find I would be banned for reporting >1000 comments a day. What I mean is, if I went around looking for these things, and reported, say 500, of these in a single day, am I looking at any disciplinary action for spamming you with reports?
If most/all of the reports have a good reason behind it, no, because you're not wasting anyone's time.

No one is ever disciplined for reporting a comment that needs to be reported, no matter how many reports we get.
We do expect upranking and downranking to be the first line of defense, though—if you send us a report saying that a comment is dumb and should be purged, and it's got a +1 ranking and you didn't downrank it, then we're just going to tell you you're being silly. Comments should be reported if they either warrant immediate deletion (like they're porn spam, or ads, or whatever), or they're outdated comments that have their rating up so high that simple downrating will never get rid of them. :)
I agree that if there's a method of reducing the signal-to-noise ratio without making casualties out of innocent comments, it should be explored. I always want to err on the side of strictness over leniency for comments, though.

One last thing I want to add to this thread, because it occurred to me after I made my last post about a week ago:
All other issues aside, I think the biggest negative impact of excessive downranking/purging/deleting is the fact that some posters will decide not to contribute posts anymore if they keep getting downranked.
I'm talking about simple common sense here: If a person takes the time to write a helpful post or guide, based on their own experiences, that's content that isn't reproduced anywhere else on the web. That's a person taking time out of their day to help other players, oftentimes because they found something out after their own trial and error, and they realize they can save other players some frustration and time by relating their own in-game experiences.
Suppose it takes a person 15 minutes to write a detailed post on how to complete a particular quest, or how to take down an elite while solo, or how to farm an elusive pet. And suppose, whether it's by pettiness, or a grudge, or general stupidity, that the poster's helpful content gets downranked and purged. And suppose that happens two or three times to the same person over the course of a couple weeks or months.
Does that person take the time to write a detailed post next time? Or do they say, 'This is probably going to end up purged, why should I waste my time?'
And ultimately that's the shame of it. As I wrote earlier, I can understand why many posts get cleaned up, and I'm appreciative of the fact that wowhead's comments are far more useful than thottbot's because of the commenting and rating system. But there's gotta be some way to reduce the collateral damage when it comes time to clean up these threads.
