The thing is, it really is that simple if everyone does what there suppose to do.
You need to tell us if your pugs you've joined have died in the fires, are healers letting people drop after the aoe, what's the dps like? Are tanks going directly through the fires? Is the boss getting too many damage stacks?
Need more info man.

i think what the problem is,ive never played a tank so i dont know how exactly it works with tanking him.but it seems like every pug ive did the tank doesnt move the boss fast enough and everyone dies from the fires
i think the dps in the pugs ive been in have been fine.its just i guess some people fail a bit to hard at this game and dont relize that fire=bad
Well, the tank mainly doesn't need to "move" away fast, the dps need to because its usually in their area. The tanks just need to avoid the fires that are behind them while kiting.
Also remember, Damage Done > Damage per second. A mage can burst with 6000 dps but die ten seconds later because he stood in a fire. Gotta keep those two things seperate.

Only thing I don't get is his ridiculous breath attack. Occasionally it'll one shot people. Is there some trick to surviving it? (I've done him, mind you, but it's annoying to have people die for what seems to be no reason.)

What you need to do is pug it yourself. That way you can gear check everyone you invite and you'll be positive that it's a geared group before you even waste your time wiping. Check achievements, check their gear, have a brief conversation with them before you invite them to find out of they even know which game they are playing.
Really, I used to find pugs for Naxx 10/25 every single week, I hated it. Each week i'd wind up with a different pug, with a different outcome, 1/2 the time ending up with a massive repair bill. Then, one day I decided to start adding the people in the pugs who sounded intelligent in vent, had good gear, and knew what they were doing. Soon enough I built up an awesome friends list of great players that I still refer to for every pug I host to this day. I am not much for a raiding guild. I'd rather be in a guild with my IRL friends, even though all we do is chat.
The new VoA boss is extremely easy. You just need to make sure you've got a group of people who can comprehend the fight well enough and have decent gear. I pugged it the second the realms came back online on tuesday and we only wiped twice. It was a 25 Man and I had never even heard of the fight until tuesday morning when I was reading forums all day long waiting for the realms to come back online. I don't do the PTRs, so things are always new to me unless i've read the patch notes.
The funny thing is, I did 10/25 Man VoA today, we 1 shot Koralon and then wiped on Emalon due to a simple LoS error. Hahah, quite funny.
For a final note, just remember to be strict with knowing the fight. If you pug something, don't pull unless you are SURE everyone knows the fight. You don't have to be rude, I know a lot of pug leaders who say, "if you don't know the fight I am booting you!" which is ridiculous and isn't going to get people to spill their guts.
Just calmly ask, "who needs me to explain the fight? don't be scared, speak up, i'd rather spend a few minutes going over the fight than waste ten minutes wiping and wasting gold on a repair bill." In fact, I have that as a macro, heh. I use it before every pull when I host.
And another thing that helps, it's nice to be a Tank or Healer when hosting. I have a few 80s, a pure DPS class and two healing classes with DPS offspecs and I often find when I pug on the two healers as a healer, I fill up A LOT faster. People will just general have more faith joining your pug if they know the raid already has a healer/tank. It's not required, but it's definitely helpfull and less stressful putting your faith in some random healer/tank. I know I can heal, that just means I need to find 1 more healer that is at least a somewhat decent healer. :)
Good luck!

Flaming Cinder shows up as a debuff doesn't it?
Add Flaming Cinder to Grid, so it shows you all the idiots who stand in it too long, kick said people from raid, problem solved.
Or you could use
EnsidiaFails
to save you the hassle of figuring out who's standing in the fire too long.
