Basically, As I understand it, WOWmatrix was lazy, and instead of just downloading the addons ONE time and storing them on THEIR server, they just linked directly to them. All the WOWmatrix guys would have had to do was set up one account that used the others to keep updated, and then copy the addon files onto their server.
Alright. So that makes it perfectly okay if I sign up to your pay-for-premium site and then distribute all of your content all over the internet right?
Come on, use some sense. Either way you look at it, WoWMatrix was providing a different front-end to curse/wowi that bypassed all of their ads while still using their bandwidth. In fact they injected their OWN ads, so not only were they not paying for the bandwidth they were using, they were making money off it. Not only that, but they were hosting addons that weren't published under the GPL or a similar license, thus making it ILLEGAL for them to distribute them (regardless of how they got the addons).

Wake up and smell the coffee. Blizzard has forbidden "Pay for premium" WOW addons (and by extension, addon sites), by fiat. You can't charge for addons. Period.
Do I agree with them? No.
Did they do it anyway? Yup.

He didn't say pay-for-premium WoW addons, he said pay-for-premium content, referring to any product available to you by you paying for access and then you turn around and give it away to others.
With that said:
Who cares why it's dead? It's dead, you have to get your addons some other way.
Your options?
1. Download the Curse Client and use it.
2. Wait for the WoWInterface client to be finished and use it.
3. Use the WoWUI client (do they have one yet?)
4. Or, browse to those sites and manually download your addons.
That's it. End of discussion.
