I shall not pretend to know the answer, but I'd assume (Which is never the proper course of action, but I haven't had the pleasure of discussing things with Asakawa in quite some time) that the term absorb is not quite right, as the damage is not by any means ABSORBED, it is merely split between the lock and the minion, quite like Hand of Sacrifice, which is a 30% split from a target to the Paladin. Essentially a targeted Soul Link. It is merely listed as an absorb effect on a "What happened to you" pane, or whatever it's labeled, because the damage did not go to you, meaning it was "absorbed" by your minion's hp bar :p
Again, I don't presume to know anything (Other than knowing I do not know anything) :D

I wonder if it would proc off Anti-Magic Zone...
On the topic of soul link... the tooltip doesn't say either "absorb" or "transfer". So any speculation is a moot point until someone tests it.
Going off the tooptip on wowhead for sacrifice the effect would proc off that.

I Will keep using my Pet as a Shield for a lot of my hellfire dmg
VW shield IS and absorb effect.
i thought we were talking about soul link ^_^
either way, i'm making assumptions based on what i know (or think i know ^_^) of game mechanics. i remember we all had to get our heads around things like absorbs when chaos bolt was going through lots of iteration.
i think that blizz uses words like "absorb" in their descriptions to reference specific technology the spell utilises on their side. however, their tooltip writing has always been FAR from trustworthy.
also, looking at what little we have
"now procs from damage absorption from all wards instead of just Nether Ward. When you absorb damage through Shadow Ward, Nether Ward or other effects"
first it says "all wards". later it says "other effects". "other effects" has massive implications for such a throw-away line.

So I've been playing on the beta lately, few interesting things I've noticed:
1: Nether Protection IS proccing off of soul link. I really can't see how this is intentional, as it results in 100% uptime.
2:
You can now pay Kurgul (the warlock trainer in the Drag) to rename your pet. It costs 50 gold.
3:
Shadowflame has a
12 second CD (
down from 25
). Damage is the same.

I have to agree about the idea of soul link continuing to proc it. Likely it will get altered at some future point. Also excellent news about renaming our pet. It would be nice to have a pet name I can actually pronounce. I believe the change to Shadowflame's CD came in the same beta build as the infamous "12% nerf".

Yeah, let's go and give our pet silly names, like all the mages I currently see running around with pets named "FROSTY", "splash" etc. It's gonna be so cool!
/sarcasm
Tbh, it is good that they do it because it makes it "fair" between all the pet classes, but I just cringe at all the silly names -_- But hey, can't get rid of them, so have to live with them. But your minions are demons, not pets, they should still have demonic names. At least my minions have pronouncable names (bizlop, shaatom, aezevere, ...).
I think I read a suggestion on these forums a long time ago about being able to sacrifice your current pet to get a new pet from the nether, thus renaming it. I'd prefer it like that really ...

Looking at the SS that he linked, that is exactly how it works. At least that's what I would assume from the "Are you sure you want to pay to abandon your minnion?"
Edit: While looking for where I saw the Shadowflame thing I came accross something I havn't seen on here yet...
Fel Armor
got nerfed. About 300 ish spell power down from what it was. From the same beta build as the change to nether protection.

Yeah, you don't get to name your pet. It just gives you another randomly generated name.

hehe, I know what you mean =P I could never abandon any of mine either. Is it sad I know all of their names offhand? Good old Ruptip, Jhormeth, Ormonn, Thooshokin and Hanaam xD

So, I'm glad you can rename your demons... but I'm not sure I like it too much. I know it sounds weird, hear me out.
I liked my demon because of their demonic sounding names. Nobody I know has made a name that sounds as Burning Legion-ish as WoW. That being said, I had some retarded names for my demons, and I'd love to change their names.
However, then I'd have to lump a lot of Warlocks in with hunters, in the "People that make retarded pet names" category.

You do NOT get to choose your pet's name. They are still randomly generated by the server. No matter how much gold you throw at that NPC, you will never get to name your pet "frosty" or "ballzack".
