One more thing: do your
dailies
! That's how I got mine, at least...
(And let's face it, 10 primals a day is nearly impossible at Elemental Plateau because it's always so crowded. Plus, it gets boring far too soon.)

If you have a gathering profession and a regular flying mount it shouldn't take more than a week or two. I was easily getting multiple stacks of herbs an hour, and to mix it up I'd do faction grinds and sell whatever loots I picked up from that. It's all a matter of time and determination.

A
llow me to toss in my two cents.
Let's evaluate the use for an epic flying mount. What will you be using it for? Which character is it going to? Should you address the character's professions if you decide to give it a flying mount?
In my opinion an epic flying mount should be put to use with a character who has a gathering skill. To have an epic flying mount simply for show is a waste, so as I always say "It's all about maximizing resources!"
If you're one of the many that have more than one level 70 mount you may consider adjusting a character's professions to full gatherer. That epic flight speed will earn you much more in time saved getting from one place to another to maximize your resource-gathering ability. Consider it!
Second of all, if you have no gathering skill on your main and you don't have a spare 70 consider holding off on the epic flying mount unless you desperately need to look cool to your friends. A character having an epic flying mount that simply doesn't utilize it's utility is a waste.
The 5,000 gold should be considered an investment to maximize gathering potential and give you a leg up on the competition gatherers, not just a status symbol! The speed of an epic flying mount is something that will work FOR you!
As for earning the gold!
I will tell you that Blizzard has put in the dailies specifically for the situation many people are in: Not enough money for their (epic) mounts. Blizzard ensured a player that no matter what they would have an outlet to earn some kind of income, guaranteed! Utilize this! Farming primals is nice and all, but think outside of the box! Professions is THE number one way to earn money, so if you find yourself always in need of money consider leveling another character. Having access so those Outlands quests AGAIN WILL earn you SO much money along with the cloth.
Other than that you need to be smart! The auction house is the singlemost easily manipulated element in World of Warcraft, so do it! You DO need some capitol to start your adventure in manipulating the auction house, however! Along with Auctioneer (duh), but with these two things you can make a killing. Some tips:
Undercut your competitors if you don't have the cash. (Undercut them by as little as 1s, it makes a difference. People WILL buy the cheaper item, no matter what.)
Never round up if you can help it. If you're selling something for 20g sell it for 19g99s
If you want to get serious about zeroing in on a market, tackle a single product such as Primal Mana (They can be very dynamic in pricing) and buy out ALL products which are under your target sale price and relist them at your sale price, and be sure to jump quick on any newcomers trying to sell their product and put it back on the AH
DO NOT FLOOD THE AUCTION HOUSE! If you have 50 stacks of Large Prismatic Shards don't put them all up at once! Make it look like there is a demand for LPS by only releasing one stack or two stacks at a time. If people see all your 50 stacks at once they'll feel less inclined to buy. If they see less total units of the product they want, they'll think they're being snatched up quick so they should act quickly before they're gone! Monitor your sales and release your product accordingly to shuffle out undercutters.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

That is proabably the best advice I've heard in a while, since so many people don't seem to understand it.

On my druid, I had a discount at level 68, so I didn't have to spend the 1000g for regular. But what I still did was I just did every single quest in Outlands (every one), vendor whatever gave the most money and got my 5000g+ that way.
On my warlock, I had to borrow 2000g from a friend and I made it back by just doing the dailies as I was trying to get the Nether Ray and Nether Drake in 2 weeks or so. I also did herb runs, but found out it was easier and less stress for me to just stick with doing dailies.

what i did to soften the 5000g blow, was to do the skyguard rep quests first and by the time i was exalted and could buy a nether ray, the 5000g hit for riding skill didn't even phase me. then i started netherwing quests and if i ran out for the day i would do skyguard dailys to get to 10 for the day - now i have 2 epic rep mounts and still have close to 10000g hehe

Another AH suggestion, buy in bulk sell single. This works amazingly well. Last night I bought a stack of 10 primal lifes(lives?) at about 110 gold. Single they go for about 15 gold a piece. I just resell them single and am making about 4-5 gold profit each one. I needed 4 of them to have something crafted. So I got a deal on those 4 and the profits from the rest easily made up for the priced of buying a large stack. This works best for items that are used in crafting recipes that often only require 1 or 2 of them, such as enchanting shards, primals, or gems.
