In our guild we don't use a DKP system. We simply use common sense, master looter and /roll.
We've used this for the last three years and have had any problems. Sure there are times where a Blue Geared Mage will outroll an Epic Geared Mage, but it's about what works out the best for the guild. Boosting the lowbies surely equates to a bigger DPS boost for the raid than given another Epic to an already well geared Mage.
Our only priorities are on Tank and Healing items, the chances of the MT beoign outrolled just wouldn't happen because of the common sense mentality we have with our raiders. For DPS however it's a Free-for-All with /roll.

I like it, but the only flaw with this system that I see.
It may "help the raid" in a sense to constantly gear up the new guys, but you can never be sure if they are skilled or will even stick around. It will be harder for the dedicated guys in your crew to gear up, and in a sense, harder to improve your core.
Not sure if I'm missing something, but that's the only flaw I see. As long as you include the common sense factor "Hunter with Betrayer lol thing"

I strongly disagree with any DKP system that rewards in any ways players who are less well geared.
If two players are competing on top end gear, then obviously it is an upgrade for both. If player A has far better gear than player B, then in almost all cases, he deserves it more. He (or she of course) has spent more time and effort gearing up, and has very likely made a far greater contribution to the raid.
To make my point a little clearer, take two warlocks running emalon 25. Warlock A is geared to the teeth in ulduar gear, and rolls on the 8.5 helm, replacing another iLvL 226 helm. Warlock B is wearing green helm. In my mind, there is absolutely no reason to give it to warlock B over warlock A. In fact, Warlock B shouldn't even have a shot at it imho.
TL;DR - the more geared the player, the more deserving they are imho.

^ Yeah, sums it up pretty well.

I can see the basis for this argument (players should work themselves up), but then there comes a point where running with a consistent raiding guild becomes the easiest way of gearing up. With a system that rewards players who are less well geared, you're boosting the overall success of the raid rather than rewarding the top dps with an additional 10dps.
My general rule of thumb is that there's generally an "accepted" gear level or DPS/HPS output required to enter certain raids. New guildies that aren't yet geared in my guild will be taken for a few heroic runs to measure their capabilities. If they "pass", they'll get let into Naxx10 runs. Once they've run Naxx10 for a while (and been getting gear in the process), they'll get bumped into the Naxx25 group, and so on.
People in greens shouldn't be running Emalon25, and would be promptly kicked from my group. Hell - people with more than one blue (saving some exceptions) would also get booted from any 25-man run I led. If the RL let you both run, I would have dropped group and made another.
