Moonkin, Mana and You

I'd like to begin another (soon-to-be) helpful topic regarding a Moonkin's (or also known as oomkin) mana pool.
There are two (2) methods of mana regeneration that are unique to other classes:
- Innervate
- Melee Attack
Let's discuss these and other forms of mana conservation for long-term fights (like MP5). What are your views on Innervating and attacking with a melee weapon?

I'm not really too interested in playing a Moonkin, but I have been interested in looking at a Moonkin-Feral hybrid.
This build is what I was looking at:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=0t0rdiIMMkZxMGcfroL
edit: if you're the back up off healer, Nurturing Instincts might be worth taking over Savage Fury
A couple of combos on paper that I see:
1. Moonkin form melee attack mp restore with Predatory Strikes (150% AP increase)
2. Heart of the Wild Intellect bonus, assuming it applies to Moonkin form, in conjunction with Dreamstate and Lunar Guidance
3. Thick Hide + Moonkin armor bonus = more survivable, better melee potential
The focus would be to nuke yourself out of mp while meleeing in moonkin, then go cat until it's done (assuming you are in a party). I'm not planning on trying this build for quite some time, lol, just more of a playing around type idea. It's unfortunate that you cant get furor too... but Heart of the Wild is worth more to a moonkin, I think.
Just thought I'd contribute some things from the feral tree that would add mp/dmg efficiency combos.

Of course it could be the worst, I haven't tried it.
But the question was, what would increase mp regen. Intensity is nice, no doubt, and so is increased Starfire, Wrath dmg. The question is, which would be better. You certainly trade off some things.... but...
Predatory Strikes gives you a massive bonus to AP mp regen. 150% is nothing to scoff at.
HotW bonuses your dmg due to Lunar guidance, as well as mp regen with Dreamstate.
HotW with +Int would help your crit chance, again a huge plus.
Would it work? I haven't tried it. Would it be better? I sure think you'd get some good combos, but I have nothing to back it up.
I was just trying to contribute to the discussion on mp efficiency/regen with moonkin. If this worked right, you'd never have to go cat at all, which would shift more talent points around, probably taking Nurturing instinct.... it would just depend
Anyway, just my 2 cents; I was just looking at the combos that I saw.

Let's keep this topic on its tracks. This isn't for sharing our moonkin-feral builds ;)

Sorry, you are right, I took this too far off track.
My apologies.

Also mana regen while attacking only works while you are in moonkin form, so no "cat doing decent dps and regen mana while hitting".
Back to OT : innervate i mostly try to keep for others, but if nobody's asking, the end of the fight is drawing near, and I'm in a tight spot regarding mana, then I'll use it on myself (knowing that i'm one of the good raid dps helps to not make it feel too wasted).
Or i end up not using it at all :/
The mana regen on attack can be completely ignored, save when you are in fights that you know well and don't want to drink that extra pot. That is more generally, any fight or phase where you know that you can gimp your dps for added mana regen without getting the raid killed or making the task to difficult for others.

I'd also like to add that the mana for hit system is only even workable in a raid if the mob/mobs you are fighting don't do some sort of cleave/tankaoe
Zul'Aman bear boss comes to mind
The last thing you want to be doing as a Moonkin is getting your brains beaten out and makeing your healers spend more mana
this made me have a think about raid bosses where you could and couldn't do this. Assuming cleave is not a problem cos you are behind the mob:
Attumen - yes
Moroes - yes
Maiden - no
Rumulo & Jullianne - yes
OZ - in theory yes.
Wolf - no. giant chicken chasing a giant wolf. comedy :-)
Curator - no
Shade - yes (although you'd need to back off again to cast)
Netherspite - no
Illhoof - yes
Prince - no
Nightbane - no
Maulgar - no
Gruul - not really
Magtheridon - yes
Hydross - yes
Lurker - no
Morogrim - yes
Leothress - no
Karathress - yes
..and that's as far as my guild has got.
But from this you can see that's it's pretty unreliable. It's a shame really cos I always thought the idea of moonkins having a melee element was kinda cool. To make it viable they either need to buff the talent a lot (i.e. WAY more mana on the proc) or provide a super duper custom moonkin weapon that has low low wep dmg balanced by enormous moonkin-only AP.

If I'm so desperate I have to resort to whacking something for mana I just whip out my Earthwarden and go to town.
On the same note: go farm demonic runes in felwood! What else are you going to use that timer for? Healthstones?
