Having considered taking up JCing for my warlock, I came to a revelation.
Its actually no better than any other profession for self-buffs, as the JC gems are worth an underwhelming 16SP each, for the same total SP as two SP ring enchants.
(for a caster) Leatherworking seems to provide the best buff (excluding Lightweave). Am I mad, or is this in fact the case?

Gratz. You are one of the few to realize it.
What JC (and BS) offer over other profession is in fact versatility. Other profession offer AP,SP or stam while JC/BS allow you to get more hit, expertise, spell pen, etc. It is also because JC/BS allow you to gem for STR, which unlike AP is buffed by BoK and some talents.

The other aspect of versatility that wasn't mentioned was for those classes who utilize dual spec. A blacksmith can have two sockets in his DPS bracers/gloves, and another two sockets in his tanking bracers/gloves. Compare that to mining, which would only really benefit the tanking spec, or skinning, which benefits the DPS spec.
But yes, the main benefit is the wide range of gems you can pick, where Enchanting or Tailoring doesn't have the selection.

In terms of SP, JC provides 48 while Enchanting, BS, LW and Inscription provide a 'meagre' 46. So, in terms of pure numbers, JC
is
superior. Its real strength is in versatility, but it does provide slightly higher numbers too.
LW is 76 SP.
I understand the versatility point, I abstracted the issue too much by choosing SP, naturally for classes and specs that benefit from non-"standard" proffession buffs, JC can be very useful.

LW is
76 SP
minus
30 SP
, which means an overall gain of 46 SP.
Touche.

FYI, while BoK provides 10% Str, buffs like Trueshot Aura provide 10% AP :) The "BoK is 10%!11!" is kinda not valid. It's the talents and scaling of abilities

Warrior has 100str, rogue has 200ap, equal in worth.
Warrior gets BoK,110str, worth 220ap.
Rogue gets TA, 220ap, still equal.
Then TA gets applied to warrior too, and now he's hugging his 22 extra ap. And laughing at you.

I never said that AP > Str for warriors, DK's, etc. Please read my initial post again.

You said the BoK give 10% is not valid, while Silversmith proved the exact opposite. Read his initial post.
Disregard the rogue.
