... do you chew on the wire or something?
One speaker dying is usually caused by a break in only one of the wires inside of the insulated outer wire.

you can try locating the break (by fiddling around with the wire and finding the spot that causes the headset to cut in and out when moved) and wrapping it with electrical tape (or any other kind of tape) to stiffen the wire into a position that keeps it from moving. There's no guarantee that will work as it will depend on the severity of the break inside, along with the quality of the headphones. Regardless, that's still a temporary fix. I'd suggest looking into some decent headphones :P

I've been using a cheap-o logitech headset (~ $40 or so) for well over a year now without any issues or any signs of it degrading in performance. Also, Logitech's RMA system is absolutely hands down the best I've ever dealt with. I had an issue with my MX518 mouse's rubberized coating peeling off, and they replaced it free of charge even though the mouse was well over six months old.

See now I've had the exact opposite issue :P
Got a headset for my little brother for his birthday last august, and he picked out a plantonics pair, and within 2 weeks the usb housing broke off them.
