mana intensive when compared to one situation, IF > PoH will always be better than IF > PW:S > PW:S>PW:S>...but with IF on a CD, I just use both methods :)

I think the answer to this question is situational depending on what role you're playing in the raid. If you're solely MT healing, max out your sp through gems. If shield spamming for raid heal support, go for int and sp.
I'm my guild's primary mt healer, but also like to provide as much raid support as possible. I've played around with several gem combos, and I've pretty much settled on gemming int primarily. Red slots get int/sp, yellow pure int, and blue get sp/spi. I take EVERY socket bonus available just to maximize my gear, because every stat has it's value, even the mp5 I get from spirit.
My mana pool sits right at 28k raid buffed, and I will blow through it in most fights from shield spams (after making sure the tank is fine of course). I fiend and hymn on most fights (the large mana pool REALLY shines here), and generally end fights at around 25-40% mana, which for me is a comfortable reserve in case things go bad in a pull and I need to use the additional amount. Taking shields into account (wowmeter.com), I'm always in the top three heals on the meters, coming in first on many fights.
I think gemming is something every disc priest needs to get a feel for individually, and there is no magic answer. Gem to maximize your playstyle, and so long as you're contributing significantly in the raid that's the only answer that really matters.

Here is a nice rule of thumb. Once you get 20k mana from geming and gear, then as you get more gear, swap out your intel/regen gems for spellpower. This should happen as you clear 3.0 content.
Sounds crazy, but ive just only broken the 2k SP barrier unbuffed as i had gemed for regen (24k mana ftw?)

^^ This.
I use Red spell Power gems, Yellow Int + Spell Power and Spirit + spell power Gems for Blue Sockets, and it works well for me.
You need to get a feel for what gems suit YOU best, no one can say their experiences on healing as facts, as just because they gem for pure spellpower because they have 0 mana issues doesn't mean you won't have mana issues. Basically, get a feel for what you think you need and go for that, unless you start using 32 attack power gems. >_>

When gemming, your #1 priority should be activating that meta. Your second priority should be maximizing w/e stat you're lacking atm. Third should be using a socket bonus. However, the last two can interchange based on what the socket bonus is...especially if it's giving you a stat you're lacking.
