I also hate the cliche that skill > gear.
It has been proven that groups in all blues can kill Yogg Saron, because they have skill and know what they are doing in the fights.
However, if a supposedly skilled person has crappy gear, it calls into question the skill of the player.

I do stuff with my guild, but sometimes that gets a bit monotonous so i'll join a pug. You're right. It isn't people asking for a gearscore, it's the attitude that i'm not good enough if my score isn't. As i've said, I consistently out heal people with higher scores. Is it their gear or just the player? Not sure, but I know what the meters say.
Well, not to go off on a tangent here, but healing meters are very far from dps meters. In dps, as long as you don't pull aggro and as long as you follow the strategy (like switching to adds on Emalon), there really isn't much to do except hitting the absolute highest number on the dps and damage done meter you can.
Healing, on the other hand, is not so simple and a lot can depend on the class and spec of the healer. There are sooo many factors that make a good healer good other than the pure number of healing done on the meter. You have to dispel/purge/cure poison/abolish disease etc. Then you have to use your cooldowns on the tank or dps wisely. Depending on the class you also have to do some mitigation like disc priests. My opinion on healing is that as long as you can keep your assigned target(s) alive then you have done your job. Anyone can spam heal while letting people die and end up first on the meter.

and don't say that someone with a lower gearscore then me can beat me in DPS
they can't
Oh that's a load of crap and you know it. In a random Ony 25 run with my friend's guild the other day, another Shadow Priest they had to PuG posted the gearscore addon, which labeled me as around 12th as far as gearscore goes, with my Ulduar 10/25 gear. The owner of the addon towards the top, around 3rd place I think. We get to air phase with no problem, when surprise surprise, he got hit by deep breath and died.
The fight goes on without a hitch for a while, but at around 7% or so into the last phase, a large chunk of the group died to an unlucky fear+cleave combo. That left the 2 tanks, a healer, 3 dps, and me alive. Me and the Elemental Shaman that were left threw out extra heals when needed, and we managed to down her. According to recount, I was 4th on overall dps. You know what the other Shadow Priest was at? 13th.
So gearscore doesn't equal skill, or even your stats.
