holy friggin wall o' text.. Anyway.. I did suggest some good things about fire pvp ,and a modest (if hastely put together) deep fire build that I tried out in pvp with some serious fun. It does, as you said, have the problems of the lack of survivability. The blast wave, living bomb, and dragon's breath do add a whole other dimension to fire pvp, and it's something to look into, but fire is generally written off as a serious pvp spec.

it's not really a wall of text, he made paragraphs and it's well formatted.

An intriguing thread. I found fire unplayable, but I hadn't thought of that last approach. Fire is my fury, so I want to find a spec to work as a second PvP spec (since I haven't even prepped my pre-raid gear and so don't have a specific PvE spec...I do well enough in Heroics for now to run it).

i didn't mean wall o' text in the way that it's unreadable... just that there's a lot of it.
imo, Fire should be ideally a Hit and Run spec in PvP.
it pretty much has to be for your survival. although, if you get in the thick of things with a fire mage, a well timed blast wave or dragon's breath and a blink can save your behind.

Ideally, these are the thing that I'd want to see.
Blazing Speed - Castable, 45 second CD.
rogues (among others) would QQ cause it's just like Sprint, but with a much shorter CD (they have 3min standard, 2min talented).. we cast BS, run it out, then blink, no melee could ever catch us.
Impact needs to be replaced with a 3 second long castable stun with a 20 second CD.
Molten Armor needs to be useful as Fire spec.
Ideally, there would be a talent that makes Snares 30% less effective on a Mage with Molten Armor. (example: Crippling Poison snares for 49%, not 70). Also, it would give a Mage 15% increased movement speed if it's up. Not the choice on caster vs. caster, but it is the choice for caster vs. melee.
this would be sickeningly nice.. but alas, i don't htink they're going to change mages very much when it comes to pvp. /sigh.

It would be nice if the fire tree had a talent that cut the time of DoTs and diseases on us by 50%. That would help our survivability without being OP.
IMHO, the only fire pvp spec that works atm is going scorch. Fireball is so easy to counterspell/silence that it is almost a guarenteed win for most guys fighting you. Plus, scorch's quick cast time gives you more impact procs and doesn't leave the "trail" leading back to your position. So you can ninja cast from behind a bush no problem until you get your Hot Streak proc.
i actually created a fire pvp build based on scorch, lb and pyro/hot streaks. it's in the pvp guide in my sig and having tried it out with a mild amount of success, but a SERIOUS amount of enjoyment (until that rogue kept finding me in that one EOTS)... scorch heavy fire builds can indeed be dangerous because it's the quickest casting damage spell in the mages arsenal, and specced right, has quite a lot of crit and damage modifiers.

The problem with Fire is the stupid amounts of RNG and the lack of efficiency. Even Frost/Disc is efficient enough now to be viable, but Fire has no real way to sustain it's mana. Think about it:
Frost has Replenishment and inherently more efficient spells. The abundance of snares allows for the ease of the creation of drinking opportunities.
Arcane has Instant Invisibility for drinking opportunities, Mage Armor to reduce magic effects, PoM Polymorph for easy drinking, and Slow for an easy escape.
Fire has... 50% regen from spirit if they are even specced for it. Arena gear has no Spirit for Mages (and I'm not asking for any).
10% disarm is too unreliable. Blazing Speed procs at the weirdest times. Just make it castable. Same with the Disarm.
The buffs to Fire that are needed aren't on the lines of damage or survivability. It's along the lines of stability and efficiency.
i'd have to agree with you.. however anything short of a complete rewrite of the fire tree wouldn't fix the problem.. and i don't see bliz doing that anytime soon..
I still think a castable sprint/disarm would make us too much like rogues and they would all whine that we can disarm them from a distance and sprint like them... wah wah wah.. the last thing rogues need is a semi-valid reason to cry "nerf pvp mages" or "buff pvp rogues"... ret pallies now are what rogues were in BC.. and blizz is still desperately trying to
look like they'll
fix that. rogues aren't anywhere near the problem they were, but pallies are twice as bad. i have honestly never once beaten a ret pally in 1v1 (since xpac came out) on my mage... never.. even if i got the drop on him.. it just doesn't matter.

Why not just use Mage Armor?
