I'm a fresh 80 DK and i'm just trying to tank with DW... right now before tank any heroic, i'm trying to get a pair of this
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37179
doing pug... since the tanks don't want this anyway :P
On normal instances it's easy and i never lose aggro... let's see how it'll work on heroics and future 10 mans.

Here is a great example as to how divided DK's can get when it approaches certain topics. Let me see if I can clear up this a bit.
1. Almost everyone who is posting about how viable dw tanking is, are not raiding much beyond Naxx 25. Remember this when opinions are given.
2. Almost everyone who is posting that it is not viable are end game raiders who only do heroics and lower level raids for fun or to do fast badge runs. Remember this when opinions are given.
3. Because of these two conflicting reports it's very easy to see why there is a seperation. DW is viable for beginning raids and Heroics, because you don't have high dps or high damage encounters where Rune strike is a must and the extra stamina given by Stoneskin is necessary, and the ability to gem for stamina or avoidance over gemming for defense comes into play.
4. The reason most end game dk tanks don't like DW is the loss of Rune Strike, when you are running with 3 dps in a heroic who are pushing 4k you learn an important lesson - "If you don't use Rune Strike you will lose aggro". Any DK who ran a heroic with a dps pulling that much threatr and states they didn't have to work to keep aggro is lying to you. It is work, you do need rune strike, and you have to freaking taunt or deathgrip from time to time.
5. DW is not viable for any raids above OS10/Naxx10 and maybe EoE 10. The reasons have been listed (lack of threat production, regearing and gemming for defense, lack of viable high threat tanking weapons past ilvl200)
6. Almost every 1h tanking weapon is fast which means less damage per swing which means less threat per swing. It also means more misses which means less threat.
7. In Normals and most heroics, the negatives are not seen, because the fights are short and usually dps is not at it's peak. Also hit rating and expertise have less importance in heroics than they do with 25 man or any end game raider, therefore the lack of it needed and the lack of rune strike and gain in avoidance makes it look viable.
So in essence is it viable - yes, but only for heroics and beginning level raids until you out gear the next level of raids. Is it recommended? sure as long as you don't plan to raid higher than Naxx 25.
I could not see tanking without Rune Strike, it would be like a warrior tanking without Devestate or sundering. Can it be done? Yes. Is it smart or even an efficient use of your abilities? No! A warrior can tank heroics without devestating or getting a sunder on any one, unless he is dealing with really geared dps. Does that mean he should?

DW tanking will not work above 10 man content until Rune Strike is added to Threat of Thassarian

Rune strike is not primary source to generate threat in DW tanking (but it still helps), Frost strike is the key, with KM Procs, both hits from Frost Strike will be crits, and generate equal threat compare with RS plus extra dmg for aggro.
FS costs either twice as much RP as RS or one and a half times as much, glyphed. You also won't get a KM proc for every FS you do, it simply isn't going to happen that way. So FS, which you say is a viable threat substitute for RS, is only going to be hitting about half as often, and KM procs on FS, which you say will help with threat, will only happen maybe a quarter as often as RS hits for 2h tanks. These numbers will be even smaller if you use RS at all, ever, because you're losing your RP through that, as well. Not to mention the fact that RS has a high threat modifier. I'll admit I don't have math to prove it, but I really, really doubt DW tanks using FS with the occasional KM proc can generate threat anywhere near what 2h tanks can generate with RS.
