This is a question for your mature, respectful opinion.
I'm an 80 prot paladin finally getting around to dual speccing (I'm starting in Ulduar).
I'm wondering what you guys think will be the 'best' dual spec- keeping in mind I mean *opinionated* best.
What am I looking for? I'm not sure. I realize ret will be great for farming, and it's fun DPS- but if I dual spec holy, I'm pretty much guaranteed a spot in any PvE encounter I could hope for.
Suggestions/thoughts/comments/opinions?
Don't dual spec holy, you will never get to log one of your other toons ever again.
regards paladinftw

I've been quite happy being Holy/Prot, Tanking on the 2-tank fights in ulduar 10 and healing on the single tank fights.
More than anything, you have to consider two things:
1. What do you like to do?
2. What does your guild need?

Spec ret and learn it and gear it up.
There will be fights when your tanking isn't needed and being able to spec dps and help bring stuff down faster is very useful.
Unless, of course, you're having trouble getting in raids at all...people will always need more healers than tanks.
If you're starting Ulduar mostly as an OT, ^ will be the best answer you can get. Since WotLK, boss fights have not been exactly tank and spank. More like melt the boss before he does serious harm to us stuff. (Hodir)
Besides, when your guild is attempting hard mode, it's the more dps they'll want not the healer. (Unless of course your guild is short on healers. But as 'slasher0161' had said, once you become the designated healer in your raid, you'll most likely stay as a designated healer until you get a new recruit.)
It doesn't matter that much, because your other healers are almost guaranteed to have a DPS spec as their alternate spec.
A flexible raider is a good raider. Your guild should be able to tell you what'd be most useful (other members are likely nearly all using dual spec), after that it's just up to you to decide what you'd like to do.

Sure, but in fights where only 1 tank is needed the OT has to go either dps or healer spec.
Even if the other healer had dual-specced dps, OT going heal spec, healer going dps spec is just silly when the OT could just go dps spec, and healer stay heal spec.
In times when dual spec is needed, the guild will require more dps than healers. So either way, it's better for OT to go dps spec and the healer also going dps spec.
I can only find flaws in my argument if when that healer didn't show up for raid.
You're acting like DPS is generic. If your guild is heavy on melee dps, and/or already has the buffs/debuffs that ret provides being given by other classes, then it absolutely does make sense to have a healer spec dps and a tank spec heals for single tank fights.
Hell, some fights (especially when you're learning them) it's handy to have 3 healers around. You could have a guild full of resto druids, for example, so your large single target heals could be a huge help on say, mimiron.
Besides, I'm sure every guild has a healer or two that would love to play dps for a fight here and there.
